So yesterday I went to turn on my notebook and Microsoft Vista Home premium no longer recognizes the product key. No problem, turn it over and read the product key. Problem the sticker has melted (see picture below). I edited the picture to see if I couldn't bring up more of the key by adjusting the contrast and brightness but I couldn't quite get it all to come clear.

Because of a contract agreement between Microsoft and HP, HP can not track the product key number even with the product and serial number. To talk to a Microsoft tech it costs money so that option is out. Anyone have any suggestions?

you can email tech support
or most tech supports have a chat interface that is also free
i would be nice if you had the boot disks lying around because it is usually on the wrapper for the disk

the first thing i do to my shitty windows boxes is write the serial number on them with a marker....seriously, dealing with serial numbers is one of the many annoyances of windows.
I really hope apple releases their next OS to run on plain windows machines without all the work thats necessary now.
There used to be a program that would tell you your registration key, do those exist for vista?

Thanks devo, I've found it. There is an error loading it though so back to the drawing board tomorrow. I blame the chat room on this site. Anyone know where I can get that refund check from justjon?

Are you able to bootup? Have you tried Jellybean? I have used it before, and it has brought up product keys no problem.
One thing is that some antivirus programs see it as a threat program. It is up to you to run. It has been safe in the past for me. I keep it on my thumb drives for when this issue does pop up on client or friend's computers.

Just ran the one at the link, and it brought up both the correct Windows and Office keys.
