Richard Kelly is a horrible human being.

I've yet to find someone who enjoys this film, but I know it has fans, so if someone here didn't think this was a sloppy, nonsensical, self-indulgent piece of meaningless dogshit, please...explain.

Donnie Darko is also not very good.

How does Richard Kelly's filmmaking career exist?

I blame teenagers.

I was doing Jameson shots while I was watching this movie with a buddy.
After too long, we had no idea what the fuck was going on. This ice cream truck started floating and shit, and we got lost.

But we both agreed to keep it on. It was very asthetically pleasing. I just enjoyed looking at it.

Kelly seems to be like M. Night Shyamalan...both are quite good as directors with excellent visual styles...but both can't write a script to save their fucking lives.

Both would be amazing music video directors.

This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. Of all the awfulness in this putrid piece of garbage the thing that REALLY puzzles me is why the hell the Rock is acting like a spaz, twiddling his thumbs through the whole movie. it was so bad and awful and obvious that I have to believe Kelly wanted him to do it. It was just so fucking stupid, and there was a whole lot of stupid in this movie.

AND WHY THE HELL WAS JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SITTING IN A GUN TURRET NARRATING THIS SHIT?!

To be honest, I don't know much about Richard Kelly. I've seen almost every movie, but I have never seen Donnie Darko.
People who's opinions I trust about movies tell me it's pretentious and stupid. People who told me I had to rent StepBrothers are the ones that usually say how "mind blowing" it is.

I checked out ST because it looked interesting, but it was a confusing cluster fuck that worried more about a celebrity filled cast than properly working out a storyline.

Not a single goddamn thing in this flick makes any sense.

NOTHING.

And why all the SNL cast members?

Nora Dunn, no.
Cheri O'Teri and Jon Lovitz, at a time they were.
Amy Poehler, yes.

Amy Poehler, yes.

He had much bigger names in his first film. Hell, he has bigger stars in this flick.

Surveillance tapes of an empty random 7/11 would be vastly more entertaining and profound than this trash.

I remember renting this a while back. I watched like maybe a half-hour into it and wondered WTF am I watching!?!?!
It definitely made no sense so I stopped watching it. Normally I would watch a movie to the end whether it's good or not, but that movie was sooo confusing I didn't even make it half way into it.

I like Donnie Darko and I really wanted to like this movie but it just sucks. There is nothing to it. As said before it looks like a real movie and is filled with people I enjoy in other movies.

It's a rambling, sloppy, barely-coherrent mess.

It might be your life story.

The worst thing about this film is that it completely fails on its own as a standalone film. In no way can you only watch this film and "get it." Kelly expects people to pour over the tie-in websites, books and comics to know the whole story, which is fucking lazy. It's simply impossile for the movie to be watched on its own and fully taken in. Fuck off, Kelly...tie-ins can be fun, but don't use them as a crutch that people NEED to read to follow your fucking dogshit movie. Donnie Darko is guilty of the same thing, though to a much lesser degree. The worst thing about DD is it's the only time where I've found the director's cut to be MUCH worse than the original release cut.

Kelly should be tarred and feathered and kicked out of Hollywood.

i was just thinking about this movie..i was wondering if it ever came out on DVD..i remember it being released in theaters and i was interested in seeing it to see how bad it truly was and when i was looking for something to watch on Ondemand i thought "That movie was out a long time ago..what happened to it?"

A former coworker lent me the movie and when I didn't follow he lent me the comic and it bothered me that even with the book, it still didn't flow. And there was shit in the comic that reflected nothing in the movie. I remember when this was on the festival circuit it was getting amazing reviews. Was it just cut down for the masses? There was some "interesting" stuff, but nothing worth ever watching a second time.

It was cut down, but apparently only about 20 minutes...20 minutes ain't gonan save this mess.

I'd also be curious as to which reviews you say that said it was "amazing" in its original cut since its savaging at festivals like Cannes are practically legendary with how much critics and audiences hated the original film.

I think this nails it. "Donnie Darko" is a fairly straightforward sci-fi flick when you think about it. There are several Star Trek episodes that cover much the same ground, such as "The City on the Edge of Forever" and the series finale of TNG. It's just about someone going back in time, however it happens, and they must make sure that an event that would not have happened otherwise does, or the world ends or some nonsense. Kelly just took an old shopworn sci-fi trope and put tons of "surreal" images and characters on top of it to try to not make it look like you've seen this before.

Looking at the one "like" vote for this film and the screenname of the person who voted, I don't doubt that his vote was sincere.

right now im just trying to figure out what they are going for. Like, i understand the plot fine, but..is it suppose to be a comedy? I'm not laughing. The film itself looks like shit

either way, my dad would like this movie. One of his favorite movies is "Coneheads" cuz he liked all the SNL cameos. The best review my dad can give a movie is "that movie had everyone in it!" so he'll love this one

GreatAmericanZero

ok i voted for it stinks cuz i think shit is the best word to describe it (and shit usually stinks)

usually you see a film thats a failure and you are like "ok, i know what it was trying to achieve and it failed". A comedy that doesn't make you laugh...a tear-jerker that you feel no emotion from...those are the usual failures

this movie..i have no idea what it was trying to be, all i know is that it failed being that. At some points i think that it was suppose to be a Charlie Kaufman type movie, where you are suppose to be laughing cuz its so surreal. Like, you have a grin waiting for what weirdness is next

or maybe the film was loaded with comic actors cuz they wanted to show them do drama and comedy, throw a bone to cheri oteri and jon lovitz

but even so, every actor in this movie was bad...which means its not their fault. I've seen most of them do good jobs in other movies. I'd love to know what notes the director told them on how to act, cuz they all looked bad

the only good things in this movie was..i didnt think it was clever to team Wallace Shawn up with Curtis Armstrong. Also, with that grey beard and horrible old man makeup, Kevin Smith kinda looked like Fez

but yeah, its an all around terrible movie. Just an epic fail

pimps dont commit suicide

a war veteran comes back from iraq
kills himself
to find meaning and understanding
a fanciful story is created to justify the death as something else
truths and circumstances are changed
over the top acting and situations are injected
a 12 minute short bio pic of a returning veteran who shoots himself in a motel bathroom becomes fun

thats what i got from it anyway

i thought that overall, the movie means the same thing as just being a Jakob's Ladder ripoff. Justin Timberlake died in Iraq in 2005, and the rest of the movie was whatever was going on with Tim Robbins in Jakob's Ladder
