Anyone who says anything other than "The Shawshank Redemption" deserves to meet up with The Sisters in a laundry storeroom.

I'm watching it now for the 100th time. It's almost 3:00 am and I can't turn it off. When Brooks killed himself I almost cried.

I don't know, maybe I'm getting my period, but goddamn this is a near perfect movie and VERY underrated as far as alltime greats go.

I gotta watch that again sometime.

Last Castle with Robert Redford and James Gandolfini is fantastic.
I think I'm done with Shawshank. I've seen it a million times, and know it by heart.

I thought I was done with Shawshank. All you have to do is let it go for at least a year or two. You'll love it again when you come back.

Don't forget about Sean Penn and Bad Boys. You get to see the on again off again asshole guard from Shawshank get his face mutilated by a BOOOOM!!! box.

EDIT: I did a quick check. That dude has been in at least 4 prison movies. Only once as a prisoner.

When people mention Bad Boys, I'm like, oh yeah that great Sean Penn movie, but it turns out they were talking about Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

I know. I googled Bad Boys to make sure I had the title right. I don't think it was even on the first page. I had to add "Penn" to the search to make sure.

SHAWSHANK is on legend status with me.

When I catch it, I drop the remote and watch it.

The scene where Penn puts sodas in a pillow case and beats the shit out of that dude is to this day one of my favorites.

Damn. Now I want to watch it again. It's been a few years. It's no Shawshank, of course, but it's a damn fun movie.

Best part of this movie is when Pam Grier is about to fight this white chick. The white chick calls Pam Grier a nigger, and then Pam takes her down and goes "That's Miss Nigga to you".
Not much sexier than Pam Grier in the 70's.

Excellent choice. Of course it being based on a true story made it pretty intriging.

Every one of the movies mentioned on this thread are great!! Time to fire up bittorrent and have a "Prison Movie" night.

p.s.----There is this girl at work that my buddy and I have nicknamed "Horowitz" because of her resemblance to the character in Bad Boys. We both want her very, very badly. Odd?

Surprised no one mentioned Escape from Alcatraz yet, which was based on a true story. Now, even though I love Shawshank, it always bothered me a little to think that some elements were ripped off from Alcatraz, ie: the whole escape by tunneling through the crumbling cell wall, the "Birdman" con that goes nuts, etc.

That's true. And the way Andy got rid of the wall in the yard by dumping the dirt out of his pants came from "The Great Escape".

EFA is a great movie. Ironically, the warden is played by Patrick McGoohan who is most famous as "The Prisoner".

it begins and ends with shawshank. best ever.
bridge on the river kwai is excellent also, but I would put it in a different class. POW movies are different than criminals (or wrongly convicted) in prison movies.
and while kwai is a great story, it is only loosely based on the true story. the main flaw: the bridge is still standing today, whereas they blow it up in the movie.

The original version of The Longest Yard is pretty good. I enjoyed the British, soccer version, Mean Machine, as well.

My new favorite. I watched it years ago, but had completely forgotten it. Eric Bana was amazing.

I liked most of the movies mentioned. Loved Shawshank and Escape from Alcatraz.

Also, Blood In Blood Out was an incredible movie.
