Dr Steve,

I'm asking this on behalf of my girlfriend so I may not have all the information you may need. She is 21 and she just had 2 periods 18 days apart. Being a typical guy I don't know much about that kind of monthly business but that clearly isn't right. Any idea what's wrong? She has also told me that her periods seem far more uncomfortable that they do for other girls, so that may be tied in to it.

you should add info as to whether she is on any pill or type of birth control. It definitely makes a difference.

Ah, thanks. I don't believe that she's on anything but I can't say with 100% certainty.

Grunt:

If this happens every month, or her periods are really heavy and irregular, she needs to see an OB/GYN or a PCP who has an interest in women's health. She could have a thyroid condition, or a host of women's hormonal issues. It's impossible to nail it down with the limited information I have (i.e., menstrual history, is she on "the pill", is she overweight, etc).

If it only happened the one time, it's likely that she simply had some mid-cycle bleeding; this occasionally happens when a woman ovulates.

There's a pretty standard protocol for figuring out what's going on when menstruation goes awry. A lot of times the easy answer is to just put the woman on oral contraceptives; this takes over the hormonal cycle and puts it to a 28 day regimen.

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks Dr Steve. To clarify a couple things she is overweight and hasn't been on the pill in the past 7 or so months. While it isn't an every month occurrence it has happened before. She went to the Dr. and was told to keep track of her cycle but she never followed up on it for a couple reasons that I won't get in to. However, one possible medically pertinent reason was that her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cysts and she was so worried about the diagnosis that she'd rather bury her head in the sand.

Also, she had a miscarriage a few years ago as well. And not that I'm bragging, but sexual activity has recently dramatically increased for her as well. Could either of those play a part?

Maybe it's just an elaborate ruse to not have sex with you.

I worry about anyone in a relationship who doesn't know if his girlfriend is on birthcontrol.

Problem is that I have white sheets.

And if it's a ruse then let's just say she's going about it entirely the wrong way...

As the Dr. said, could be anything, so she needs to see a Gyno. If she's bleeding heavily and having alot of pain, that may also be a symptom of Endometriosis.

Problem is that I have white sheets.
I hate white sheets. If I want white sheets, I'll check myself into a hospital.

eh, I would imagine it happens once in a blue moon.
I don't know, I've never had my period twice in a month. I've skipped a month here and there in the past for no known reason other than I wasn't eating.

I think there is a lot more to it, especially since she did not follow up with her doctor after discussing the issue.
