In the "Worst Movie Ever" thread I saw a couple of people mention that at certain movies they asked for or wanted their money back. I thought about this and it seems kind of crazy to go to a theatre, request a ticket, sit in the seat and then ask for your money back because the movie the stunk.

Wouldn't that be like going to the grocery store, buying a can of soup, heating it up and asking for your money back because the soup sucked?

I might be wrong, but this is my perspective. I'd like to hear from people who think I'm wrong and to have them convince of why a bad movie warrants their $10 ticket price be returned to them?

If you sat through the whole movie I would agree, but if it stunk so much that you walked out 20 minutes in, I could see asking for your money back.

I agree. you take your chances with movies; if you go to a baseball game, and your team sucks, you don't get a refund.
read reviews ahead of time, talk to people whose opinion you trust, listen to R&F, do your homework, and blame only yourself for not doing due diligence.

If someone is dumb enough to go to a movie that is that bad, they deserve to be ripped off. Do some research in this day and age. Or even better, don't be a dumb shit to go see 'The Love Guru' or 'Meet Dave'. A rube deserves to have their money taken from them.

Even then, I'd have to hear a pretty good story to give people their money back. If I owned the theater, maybe I'd offer a ticket to another film, but that's it. It's so easy to find hundreds or even thousands of reviews these days plus all kinds of clips and trailers. If you really had NO idea that the movie might not be any good to the point you'd become an asshole demanding your money back, well, then you're an asshole AND an idiot.

i returned steak to the butcher a few weeks ago. gave me a full refund. returned an xbox to walmart a few years ago and got a full refund. never asked for $ back for a shitty movie though.

Also what is the cut off for satisfaction? I laughed at one joke or 5 jokes so I got my moneys worth? id love to get reinbursed for every ball game I went to that the home team didnt win. Broadway also has a policy that if a "Star" is not there for a performance all they do is put a little flier in the playbill. No refunds.

I have never nor do I plan on EVER asking for my money back because a movie disappointed me. I don't understand the mentality behind that and think it's nervy and cheap. I'm curious what justification people have for this.

I agree. The only time I've asked for my money back was when there were mechanical problems. Once, the projector actually stopped and the film melted. Another time the sound was fucked up and we couldn't hear any dialogue. I've never asked for my money back for a movie just being bad. And I sat through Wildcats.

The sad part is we all know plenty people who would give that movie a thumbs up and be disappointed in a movie as good as Zodiac.. subjective.

Agreed.. the only time i recall asking for my money back was when i was with my mom once and the movie cut out and then the fire alarm went on and we had to evacuate.. (there was no fire).

I think they actually owe you like a disability pension or something after that.

I should have asked for a refund from my brother, since he's the one who wanted to see it.

Most of the money that is being spent at the movie theaters on these horrible movies are teenagers who could care less what they are seeing anyway.

theatre owners make very little profit from the ticket sales. popcorn and soda is where the fat cash is so asking for a refund probably doesn't hurt the theatre much.

it's not the theater's fault the movie sucked. but if there are mechanical problems and they don't show the movie properly, then yes you would be entitled to a refund.

Why ask for a refund, just walk to another movie.

I once knew someone who went to the manager because the projector was out of focus. He demanded two free passes. One for the ticket he purchased and one for the fact they wasted his time and gas money.

One time I watched my father, who is an intimidating guy go up to a clerk at the Burlington Coat Factory and try to return a down vest he had bought that was leaking feathers all over.
The guy told him "you wore it, it's yours"
I then watched my pops rip the vest in half and shake it. FEATHER RAIN.

The looks on the faces of the 5.25 an hour return clerk was fucking hilarious.

I know this is off topic.
I just love the story.

unacceptable by humans who meet a normal standard of living.

i would equate it to tossing down a chip on a roulette table and losing... then demanding the chip be returned after the fact.

beyond maniacal!

It's hit or miss with a movie.
You can't ask some kid at a ticket counter to give you money back, for a movie that you chose to go see.

I have never Walked out of a movie because it sucked...I chalk it up to live and learn.
I have walked out and demanded my money back because of the horrible aweful Negroes that were throwing shit and talking through-out the movie.
I pay to go see a movie, not fear for my life.

The closest I ever got to wanting to get money back from movie tickets was a few years ago we had gone in and the first 20 minutes into the movie the sound was incredibly low to the point that you could not even hear it. Eventually the film started falling apart also on the screen and everyone was quite upset. The theatre wasn't even aware of it until the film started screwing up and someone got the manager. Within 10 minutes they fixed the problem and everything was fine from then on. In that kind of situation I can see if they had not fixed the problem a need to request money back, but if the movie itself sucked, no I wouldn't.

Pull the fire alarm. Not only will you get a refund, you've saved the whole audience its money too. Win/win.

I've only ever asked for my money back one time, and was totally willing to accept if they refused. Back in the mid 90's, my fiance and I walked into that Dustin Hoffman monkey virus movie, and we realized within the first two minutes that we'd already seen it. I have no clue why we could have made such an idiotic mistake, especially since I hardly saw ANY movies in the 90's. There was a heavy pot influence in my life back then. In any case, they were nice enough to refund the tickets.

The only other reason I'd ever ask for a refund would be for a technical fuck up, or mice in the popcorn or something.

Whatever you do, don't go to see that Biggie Smalls movie.

That's funny. I think between the movies and tv, there were about 3-4 identical flicks about virus outbreaks that came out at that time.

I know, right? Usually science fiction movies have some redeeming quality.
