View Full Version : Brooklyn = Overrated
When it comes to the 5 boroughs that comprise New York City, Manhattan is universally accepted as the greatest of them all, as well it should be. From Central Park to the Financial District, from Broadway to Times Square, from The United Nations to the Chelsea Piers; everything worth seeing and doing in NYC is on that one tiny island that is Manhattan.
I think it's also universally accepted that Staten Island is the worst. No offense to those who live there, but it's really only included because they needed the dues. Kind of like Delta house taking in Flounder.
Of the remaining three, Brooklyn is often rated above both Queens and the Bronx because of its history. It's gotten romanticized over the years, but let's be honest - since the Dodgers left over 50 years ago, Brooklyn's been on a downward slide. Coney Island is a shit hole these days, and the amusement parks that have popped up all over the country have left this dump irrelevant even as an amusement park.
I know Queens and the Bronx ain't no bargains either, but at least they're home to the Mets and Yankees. What does Brooklyn have? Not a whole hell of a lot, except for the memories of a time long gone.
I think it's time people admit that's all they have there - memories. If you open your eyes and look at present day Brooklyn for what it is, you'd realize it's just another suburb of Manhattan, even less New York City-like than Long Island or Jersey.

You son of a gun. I rate Brooklyn as my #1 borough in the city. Manhattan has become a strip mall of shiny trinkits for the tourists and the playground for the rich. Since the LES and Tribeca have been gentrified no offense Mikey Boy the art and music scene has been pushed out to Brooklyn making it the hippest borough currently. Living in Staten Island I know it aint got much but Queens got Earl so there you go, the Bronx has the Zoo so that gives it a push so to sum up.
Smilers rankings of the 5 boroughs:
1 Brooklyn
2 Manhattan
3 Bronx
4 Staten Island (geographically alone it should be Jersey but I'm glad it aint)
5 Queens (Earl factor)

Gvac just found his way onto the DO NOT Invite list for my next party. good day sir.
Seriously, I love living in Brooklyn. More so since we moved to Bay Ridge. I love the neighborhood. I always have. I enjoy walking to the stores up and down 3rd ave. I enjoy not having to take the truck to go food shopping. With that said, I have seen the rest of the borough go through so many changes that it does dishearten me. Bensonhurst, where I grew up is now mixed with Chinese, Middle Eastern and Russians. The signs for store are no longer even in English. Park Slope has erased all of its history for the Yuppies money. Bushwick is trying to turn itself around but it is not happening. Coney Island, evey year gets closer to losing what little history and pride of its past and closer to extinction.

But Brooklyn home of The Blowhard. How could it possibly be overrated?
But Brooklyn home of The Blowhard. How could it possibly be overrated?
Precisely my point.
The only people who think this once great borough is still great are those who wax nostalgic and view it through the memories of a wide-eyed child who just got home from the 1964 World's Fair.
Which was held in Queens, by the way.

I really like Luger's, but it's as overrated as Brooklyn is. Their bacon and burgers are better than their steak. Sparks and Keen's are both better than Luger's and there are tons of others I haven't even tried yet.
Living my entire life in Queens, of course I don't think it gets enough credit, based on the food alone. Our Chinatown is better than Manhattans, Indian Food in Jackson Heights, Spanish and Italian food in Corona...it goes on and on.
I ask you, was Brooklyn featured in Men In Black?!?!

Yes I do but the same could be said for any city in this country. Park Slope looks no different that a "Lifestyle Center" (outdoor shopping mall) in West Lake Ohio. NYC as a whole has lost its edge. Its lost it personality in favor of Corporate Dollars.

true. a few years ago I did a guided walking tour of it. In the 60's paroled convicts would be set up in the projects there. The idea was that if you confined all of the bad element to an area like that the rest of the borough would be cleaner. Now, the people that live there are being pushed out because someone realized that water front property is valuable

Gvac pushed a button with me, because Ronnie B went off on just this point about a month ago, and I still haven't let it go.
Brooklyn is, without a doubt, the most overrated part of NYC, and when I tell you why even Blowhard will agree with me: Brooklyn is overrun with hipster douchebags like so many cockroaches on an open bag of sugar. Williamsburg, Park Slope, Fort Greene, Red Hook, Greenpoint, Bushwick, they're infesting that borough and rendering it unlivable.
I know all you "hey Ronnie B, I brought you a canoli" motherfuckers think that you're representing Brooklyn, but you're not. I'll tell you the one person that we all know who represents Brooklyn in my eyes:
Franklyn.
Brooklyn is a phony poseur wanna be hack.
Homina homina homina homina
Brooklyn is hack.

Rambli' Jack Elliot hated Broooklyn.
Well, he hated NY as a whole, but that includes Brooklyn.

Some of the greatest restaurants you'll ever find. There's no place, besides Manhattan, to find a fantastic little place to eat.
While there are great places to eat in brooklyn, I would put it on par with queens, there are some amazing restaurants in queens and its more ethnically diverse

So, as an adult, you rate neighborhoods based on amusement parks and baseball teams located within the borough?
Parks, restaurants, clubs, bars, beaches, music venues, scenic views, great public transportation, minor baseball team, wide range of ethnicities, many colleges, etc.
But you are right I would give it all up for a roller coaster and to watch grown men play a gam.
