my son's car is sitting in the driveway while he is away at college. he has no idea where the key is. he says if I bring the VIN number to the dealer they can get me a new one. its a 1996 Nissan Altima. anybody know if he's right? can a locksmith make one?

if you have proof of ownership i think bringing the vin to the dealer would work. i don't imagine a locksmith would work, but i may be wrong.

Yes. Take the VIN and proof of ownership to the dealer and you can get a replacement. I almost had to do it last summer until a co worker found my keys. A 96 altima shouldn't be to expensive. For newer cars with chips in the key are expensive to replace.

What they said. Try it without proof of ownership first just to test them. Chew their ass if they make you one without you proving you own the car.

A locksmith can make keys for a car. It is expensive but it works. When I was in college we got all high and lost our keys for the car and had to have a locksmith do it. He came while we were having a summertime keg party and got wasted with us after he made he key.

Be glad it's an older car, my husband has a HHR and lost his keys. They said to make a new key, the car had to be towed to the dealership because of some code/chip.

I drive a Honda Pilot and the little chip in the key for opening the doors got wet. They wanted 95 to cut and replace the key, at the dealership.plus I had to make an appointment to do it so they can link it to the car.

I flushed my keys down a toilet a coulpe months ago at a gas station. Luckily I had an extra set...60 miles away. Its crazy how much money they want for the key to my Mini Cooper and amazing that the laws of physics allowed for the keys to fall out of my purse mid flush an go down the toilet.
