I drive with one hand (my left) at about a little less than eight

No real reason, it's just where I'm most comfortable.

Ten and two when using both hands. I mostly just drive with my left at ten and my right either holding a cig, or resting on the passenger side seat back.
I heard they are teaching eight and four in school now. They say ten and two is dangerous if the airbag deploys. I've tried it, and there's just no way I can drive like that.

I was taught 9 and 3 in police driving because it works w/ the shuffle steering concept.
That's where your hands never cross over each other and the steering wheel is shuffled through your hands.

I drive with one hand at 12 or one hand at 5.

I sit with my driver seat leaned back pretty far, so I actually have to kinda sit up from my normal driving position to be able to reach the 12 oclock position on my steering wheel

About a month ago, one of the nurses at work was in a small car accident, her hand was crushed against the steering wheel and walked away with a lot of broken bones.
After hearing this, I tried to keep my hands at 10 and 2, but I can't help myself. I am always switching hand positions. I know 10 and 2 keeps you alert, which is the point, but I just go with whatever's comfortable. I enjoy driving and like to feel relaxed.

i never understood the driver's seat leaned back thing. aside from the fact that you can't see sh!t, you have to stretch to reach the steering wheel, meaning your arms and back wind up more tired than if you have your seat upright.

I have a bad back and its actually more comfortable for me to drive that way. I dont get as stiff.
Also, I can still see over the dash and when I have to turn or look somewhere I sit up and look. I just find it more relaxed and comfy, like a recliner almost

i think 12 o'clock is the best position for quick reaction. from 12, you can go to 5 to the right or 7 to the left pretty quickly in an emergency.
secondary question: seat belts. i feel like i'm on a roller coaster without a safety harness if i don't have my seat belt buckled. any old-school anti-seat-belters here?

don't blame the car companies. it's the @sshole insurance companies. seat belt laws, smoking bans, suing bars for drunk-driving accidents, etc. it's all insurance company @ssholes who love collecting their monthly premiums, but will do anything they can to avoid paying out on any sort of claim. these are the jack offs turning the "land of the free" into the "land of the restricted".

I had a friend who was a forearm driver. He had a VW panel bus and he would get as close to the steering wheel as possible, place both of his hands at the apex of the steering wheel and place his forearms down the sides of the wheel as best he could. He was a real weird cat.

The only times I do not wear my seat belt is up at my property and when taking my truck through mud or high water (don't know why on this last thing, maybe to lean out the window and judge how deep I am). Hell, I also drink and drive, and carry a gun. I guess my logic is a bit fucked up.

I just drove to the store and paid better attention. When driving with one hand, I don't put my left at 10, as I previously stated. I hold the wheel at 9, between my forefinger and middle finger. When I need to use the turn signal, I slide my hand up so my thumb is resting on the crossbar at 9, so I can reach the signal. So basically, I drive a car that veers heavily to the left, with two fingers.

Yea, I knocked my alignment out up at my property when I took a foot high bump followed by a burm too fast in 4 wheel drive. I was trying to get some speed (snatch him out) so I could pull some dude in a 2 wheel drive out who did not belong in the mud.
On topic, although my truck veers left if I am not paying attention, I still hold my steering wheel one handed.

That "10 and 2 isn't safe because of airbags" was busted on Mythbusters a while ago. [Episode #87.]
No, your thumbs won't get broken or ripped off if you have an accident and the airbags deploy:
Drivers who hold the steering wheel in the “10 and 2″ position can have their thumbs ripped off by a deploying airbag. (http://mythbustersresults.com/episode87)
BUSTED
The Build Team obtained an old car with a working airbag and created a pair of ballistics gel hands that would simulate a driver holding the steering wheel at the 10-2 position. When the airbag deployed, it knocked the arms off of the steering wheel, but did not cause any visible damage to the thumbs. Then, following a fan suggestion, the Build Team then tested the myth under the assumption that the driver was holding the wheel with his hands in a fashion similar to the Vulcan Salute. The deploying airbag caused serious damage to the thumbs, which would have meant broken thumbs if an actual person were holding the steering wheel. However, because the myth was based around the commonly used 10-2 position, the myth was busted.
When I googled this to figure out if I was remembering the episode correctly, lot of people on car afficionado websites are saying that the "new" hand position is because instructors are assuming the car has power steering.
I don't know about that, but my last in-car driving lessons were ... 10 years ago.

I also poistion myself so that when my hands are on top of the steering wheel, my shoulders are pressing against the seat. I learned that if you do this, in an emergency, you will have better control of the car. If you find that when your hands on on top of the wheel and your shoulders are not in contact with the seat, you would be thrown around the car in an emergency.

O just noticed today that I have been driving with my left on the 11 and my right holding onto my arm rest, or whatever.
I took 2 professional driving courses in the military and one was an escape kinda course. The left was at the 12 and the rightwas on the stick. You can do a full steer while maintaining control better at this position. Both your shoulders should always be in contact with the seat, and you learn to brake and hit the gas at the same time using both feet.
Just was interesting finding this book, sorry.
