Lots of ferries. The current has the plane and it's headed towards the sea.
Could make out people on the wings but can barely see the plane.

This is the time to fly. I wish I had a flight today or the next few days. If you're afraid of flying, nothing is better than seeing one go down just before you fly, because the odds that it happens again right after are even more astronomically small than something happening in the first place.

Not to be Larry Literal, but of course this doesn't change the odds that a flight will or will not go down in the next few days.

I like the progression of news reported here.
small plane carrying more than a dozen people (I guess 147 is more than a dozen).
Reuters reports that a small plane carrying more than a dozen people has splashed down intact into the Hudson River near Manhattan.
It quotes witnesses as saying the plane, that WNBC says is a U.S. Airways plane, is floating in the river with survivors standing on the wings awaiting rescue.
WNBC tv shows video of the plane surrounded by ferries apparently attempting to rescue survivors.
Update 3:49 p.m. ET: The Associated Press also reports that the plane is a U.S. Airways plane. There is no report on the condition of the passengers.
Updated at 3:52 p.m. ET: The AP, quoting FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown, identifies the plane as United Airways flight 1549 en route from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, N.C.
WNBC says the plane was carrying around 146 people. CNN says the U.S. Coast Guard is dropping lift jackets into the water to survivors. Still no word on any injuries.
Update at 4:01 p.m. ET: The FAA spokeswoman says the airplane, an Airbus 320, "may have been hit by birds," the AP reports.

They're saying that the pilot was trying to get the plane to Teterboro. There is no way he could have landed that size plane at Teterboro. They were lucky he had to ditch in the Hudson because if he actually made it to Teterboro we really would have had a tragedy. That plane would have wound up in the Votech High School across from Rt 46.

Every time they interview an 'eyewitness', they sound like complete idiots. Why don't people know how to talk anymore?
The pilot did an amazing job and should be made a hero.
I heard one interview on the cnn live feed.
The guy was answering questions, at one point said; I don't want to be made out a superhero or something like that...
but when asked if the pilot did an amazing job landing the plane before it could hit the buildings he said he couldn't say anything about that ... as if he was blaming him for the crash

Sure, he was in a plane crash, but if no one else dies in the crash, is he really a survivor? I mean, I've survived several flights before.

the geese who took this plane down were not canadian geese
they were islamic geese who got into this country using fake passport to get through the canadian border. several of the geese had taken flying lessons in florida. on instructor claims that the geese payed significantly less attention to lessons on landing. The geese waited until a few minutes into the flight then they tried to force their way into the cockpit. They carried pepper spray and box cutter which had been smuggled in their carry-on luggage. fortunately there was a group of american geese also on the flight. they were able to subdue the terrorist geese. during the fight the captain was knocked unconscious. the co-pilot was able to make a controlled crash into the hudson. the 'canadian ' geese are being taken to guantanimo for interrogation.

a miracle would be a plane flying with no engines. what happened today was a skilled pilot who was able to crash-land a plane in a river with lots of ferries and other boats nearby whose captains pitched in to help out in an emergency situation.

apparently, birds got sucked into both engines, which blew them both out. a miracle would have been the rest of the flock grabbing onto the plane's wings with their beaks and helping fly it to safety, but i guess god isn't very creative with his 'miracles'.

I think the problem with the word "miracle" is that people use it when they don't necessarily feel that an occurrence is and "act of God", but rather a wonder. Something amazing. The plane was landed with the skill of the pilot, yet it is still a wonder that he was able to do it. From what I'm seeing recently, it's the first successful controlled landing on a body of water by an airliner EVER.

I spent six years flying in the back of C-130's and it was generally accepted that "ditching" in the water equaled certain death.
...as for miracle...I think this qualifies under the "act of God" clause. It wasn't just the pilot's skill...had it been warmer, the wind stronger or the takeoff trajectory different it would have been a disaster. All the external conditions had to be just right in order for this to happen. Now if I only believed in God.

A hell of a lot of skill and a hell of a lot of circumstance. Having all those boats be on the scene virtually immediately saved a lot of people from hypothermia and that pilot definitely had one hell of a landing for the plane to rest so well on the water. All those boat captains and the flight crew better not have to ever buy a drink again since that situation easily could have had fatalities.

This thing is extraordinary, though it appears the pilot was landing on calm water.
I find it remarkable the plane didn't take out a small boat.
And the whole affair brings to mind an old Laurie Anderson song called "From the Air"
Good evening. This is your Captain.
We are about to attempt a crash landing.
Please extinuish all cigarettes.
Place your tray tables in their
upright, locked position.
Your Captain says: Put your head on your knees.
Your Captain says: Put your head on your hands.
Captain says: Put your hands on your head.
Put your hands on your hips. Heh heh.
This is your Captain-and we are going down.
We are all going down, together.
And I said: Uh oh. This is gonna be some day.
Standby. This is the time. *And this is the record of the time.
This is the time. *And this is the record of the time.
Uh-this is your Captain again.
You know, I've got a funny feeling I've seen this all before.
Why? Cause I'm a caveman.
Why? Cause I've got eyes in the back of my head.
Why? It's the heat.
Standby.
This is the time. And this is the record of the time.
This is the time. And this is the record of the time.
Put your hands over your eyes.
Jump out of the plane.
There is no pilot. You are not alone.

This is the time. And this is the record of the time.

(AP) NEW YORK (AP) - Federal investigators said the left engine of the US Airways jetliner that ditched into the Hudson River was missing Friday as reports emerged that the pilot who safely landed the aircraft had considered an emergency landing at two airports. Police divers were using sonar to find the engine, which was believed to be in the water.
"Once we get the flight data recorder it will give us the radar so we can figure out where the engine separated from the plane," said NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson.

Did the plane actually sink? Is it at the bottom of the river now?
They pulled it over to a dock and they're working out the logistics of trying to lift it onto a barge with a crane without splitting it apart. I think it weighs something like 80 tons and that's without it being filled up with water. They said one engine is still attached and they're using sonar to look for the other one.

I've heard this dozens of times since Thursday. It's a hollow tube, what exactly was everyone expecting? Have you ever seen a supertanker? They outweigh that plane a thousand times over yet they manage to stay afloat too.
it's a hollow tube with massive under-body damage from the crash-landing. hardly air-tight. by the time i saw it (an hour or so later, downtown where they eventually moored it), only the tail and the tip of one of the wings was out of the water. pretty remarkable how quickly everyone got out and got rescued.

I coulda used such a switch - similarly named - when I was younger, and (much) better looking, and younger, and thinner.

Plane Crash Survivor Couple's Love Is a True 'Miracle on the Hudson' (http://www.lemondrop.com/2009/12/15/miracle-on-the-hudson-couple/?icid=main|aim|dl3|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lemondro p.com%2F2009%2F12%2F15%2Fmiracle-on-the-hudson-couple%2F)
Then came the emergency landing, and photos of Zych were everywhere -- especially on Facebook where the survivors quickly connected. Bostic kept an eye on her via the Internet, and six months after the crash, they met again, this time "for real" at a survivors get together.
"We've been dating ever since, and it's been amazing," Bostic says. "We've lived, laughed, danced and loved like two people who know tomorrow isn't guaranteed."

Maybe you should try a shower and a new shirt first.

Hollywood Boarding Flight 1549 With Capt. "Sully" (http://blog.moviefone.com/2010/09/30/hollywood-boarding-flight-1549-with-capt-sully/)
It's surprising that it's taken this long -- particularly when today's media mentality of "ripped-from-the-headlines" turns virtually every event into a made-for-TV or direct-to-DVD movie -- for Sullenberger's story to come to Hollywood. Apparently, Sullenberger was not too keen on selling the rights to his memoir until he met Harrison Ford -- a licensed pilot -- at an aviation event. According to Variety, Sullenberger asked Ford's advice, and he recommended friends Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy "as a go-to producing team."
