ESD can not be the EP. He is a great talent, but can not handle the "executive" of EP.
But, I am all for any plan that gets Mooch in. I think the EP should be a professional, someone who can manage and help the talent. Not someone who wants to be the talent.

Show of hands... how many people here think you know what an EP does?

He's basically the manager of the show, and the go-between of management and the staff.

Does Mooch even have that much radio experience? It seems he's got a lot of tech experience but not a lot of hands on experience.

I'm not trying to hate on Mooch. But there is an experience factor here that Dave has which Mooch doesn't.

And if Dave isn't promoted, what's wrong with hiring an outsider?

No, Mooch wouldn't be an ideal choice. Again, he is more artistic talent than EP. But, if the only way to get him on the show full-time is as an EP, I will settle for that.
Again, I have stated that I am for hiring an outsider, I just don't know any by name. But, I agree that the EP needs to be more manager than producer. ESD, Hicks, Mooch should be producing bits, the EP should be coordinating with everyone.

There are only 4 possibilities as far as I can tell -

1) Earl found employment elsewhere and was lying when he said he had nothing lined up

2) Earl was looking for reassurance and was hoping Ron and Fez would plead with him to stay

3) He genuinely quit with no other job in his immediate future

4) It's a work

I don't personally dislike Earl, I just never felt he was truly a part of the show. He never "got" it.

I wish him well and I hope he finds happiness and success.

I'm going to miss Earl. Did he retire just so he could watch the inauguration and not pay off the guarantee he made claiming the New York fucking Jets were going to make the playoffs?

If this was mentioned before I apologize.

I was gritting my teeth while driving every time he said it.

I haven't listened to the show that long but I think even I can tell that'd be the most work anybody's done just to not pay off a bet. Usually they just move on or bring in the Afro Warrior

Same. Dave does know his stuff but doesn't have the breadth. When Ron & Eddie Trunk are disagreeing on something, Earl seems to be the guy that Ron would go to for another opinion then East Side Dave with wikipedia (unless it's grunge or GNR). Earl would do a great job at that and speaking parts are limited enough he wouldn't be overwhelmed. The times I've listened to a Sirius DJ it's just relying on being able to swear to be interesting every once in a while. Earl would at least have a factoid or a reason why he's picking such and such song (if the DJ even has that much power, what do I know)

I believe Earl is going to become an ordained Baptist minister.

He claims God spoke to him and told him to resign from the show, so it only makes sense that he would follow a path that he believes God has set before him.

I just hope it's somewhere besides the Ron and Fez show.

I choose #4... Ron was too glib during the "retirement" speech.

I was there today with my girlfriend and neither of us could tell if it was a work, either. They played it off like it was real, but a) it was a little too abrupt and b) I really don't know what else Earl would go do. I believe the mid-day rambler is coming.

Ron is the rube master, but I think this is the real deal. The only other possibility I can believe is that this somehow ties into Fez's secret tomorrow. A great huge we got you, on a military scale. Although I believe Ron & Fez could pull it off, I just don't think so this time. Ron's book of management states: never fire an EP, make it so uncomfortable he quits. I listened to the segment on Audible. Earl didn't retire. He said he is going to pursue other options. That's not a retirement, that is a declaration to check the classified pages. When that fails, he'll come back.

I think the option Earl should pursue is psychological assistance. Earl lacks practical, rational coping skills; he appears to invent artificial scenarios to avoid telling the truth about anything. If the miscarriage story and the friend having a hysterectomy story are true, the damaging microphones, fleeing the studio and fainting should concern the guy.

Baby forever...and ever and ever
(You know I am)

Baby pick your head up
Come on and look me in the face
Cuz I can tell that somethin'

(Why are you down?)

Is it the rumor
That another boy
Wants to take your place
(I hear he's after your heart)

Have you been hearin' the stories
They're goin' around
(All of my friends are talkin')
Baby just remember I gave you my heart
Ain't no one gonna tear us apart

He could promise the moon
And the stars above
Even if he promised me the world
Just remember I'm forever your Earl

He could promise the world
You gotta remember
I'm forever your Earl

Honey listen to me
Your love is all I need
You should know that I don't need nothin'
That money can buy
(It's no lie)

So if a boy were to come along
And try to make me leave you
(Earl I'd go out of my mind)

There'd be no need to worry
I'm tellin' you why
(I need to hear that you really love me)

Baby don't you know that I love you
And I'd never put nobody above you
He could promise the moon and the stars above
Even if he promised me the world

Just remember I'm forever your Earl
He could promise the world
You gotta remember
I'm forever your Earl

I'm forever your baby
Just remember I'm forever your Earl
He could promise the world
You gotta remember
I'm forever your Earl

When the mountains crumble into the sea
That's the day someone'll come
Between you and me
Baby just remember I gave you my heart

(Tell me) ain't no one gonna tear us apart
Baby he could promise me diamonds
Even if he promised me pearls
Honey you know I ain't lyin'

Listen as I tell it to the world
You gotta remember baby remember
You gotta remember
I'm forever your Earl

Baby forever and ever and ever
We'll be together
I'm forever your Earl
Baby forever and ever and ever
You gotta remember
I'm forever...
Hey baby he could promise the world

Earl you know I love you
And I always will
If we live 'til forever

I'm agreeing with Tom here. As much fun as everybody has dumping on Earl and his inadequacies, he's still a sentient being and enduring that post-ambulance ride beatdown from Ron last week could not have been something he shrugged off. I'm sure he's been stewing on it since and figured he should step aside for the good of the show. Like Melk said earlier in the thread Earl lacks basic coping and planning skills so, kinda predictably, he fumbles the exit plan. Problematically for him, playing the "I quit. No, I changed my mind" game in a company going through the downsizing that Sirius-XM is, is a dangerous roll of the dice. But, like Farmer Dave said, we'll find out the real story soon enough.

For those of you who want to challenge Cigars and Scotch for the best song parody here's another template to work off:

Goodbye Earl (Dixie Chicks version)

Mary Anne and Wanda were the best of friends
All through their high school days
Both members of the 4H Club
Both active in the FFA
After graduation Mary Anne went out lookin'
for a bright new world
Wanda looked all around this town
and all she found was Earl

Well it wasn't two weeks
after she got married that
Wanda started gettin' abused
She put on dark glasses and long sleeved blouses
And make-up to cover a bruise
Well she finally got the nerve to file for divorce
She let the law take it from there
But Earl walked right through that restraining order
And put her in intensive care

Right away Mary Anne flew in from Atalnta
On a red eye midnight flight
She held Wanda's hand as they
worked out a plan
And it didn't take long to decided

That Earl had to die
Goodbye Earl
Those black-eyed peas
They tasted all right to me Earl
You're feeling weak
Why don't you lay down
and sleep Earl
Ain't it dark
Wrapped up in that tarp Earl

The cops came to bring Earl in
They searched the house
high and low
Then they tipped their hats
and said 'Thank You ladies
if you hear from him let us know'

Well the weeks went by and
Spring turned to Summer
And Summer faded into Fall
And it turns out he was a missing person
who nobody missed al all

So the girls bouth some land
and a roadside stand
Out on Highway 109
They sell Tennessee ham
and strawberry jame
And they don't
lose any sleep at night 'cause

Earl had to die
Goodbye Earl
We need a break
Let's go out to the lake Earl
We'll pack a lunch
And stuff you in the trunk Earl
Well is that all right
Good Let's go for a ride
Earl hey

I am trying to not get too excited. I think he will worm his way back in.
Ron today made an aside, "Public apology?, so it is a bit."
I hope that wasn't about Earl.

The real problem of the Ron & Fez show is Fez. Ron is to chicken shit to tell Fez to step up and earn his paycheck. Instead, Ron, magnifies everything that Earl does.
The show has really gone down hill so much. The only entertaining aspect of the show are Ron and Earl's discussion on musical topics.

Also the movie discussions are good too.

I can't stand to hear Fez talk about his problems, crazying, like a little bitch all the time.

And finally, Dave. Dave can be a funny guy at times but please, please, leave your wife and child off the show. Nobody cares that your wife have big T**ts.

I still think it's a work, the problem is I thought Pitzy's leaving was a work and look how that turned out. The only difference there is I didn't really give a shit if Pitzy came back, Earl on the other hand I've always thought brought awkward radio gold to the table so I will miss him if he goes.

Earl is willing to make the smooth transition of first choice Mooch to happen for however long that takes. The real loyalty of Earl to the show will work in his favor in the long run. He HAS quit the show. That has not changed. It was not a "bit",and Ron is coping in the best way possible. Earl witheld totally training others to do most of his various jobs before he quit,as you can imagine to secure his value and "hold" on those jobs for his own job security. He would not be so easily replaced by someone coming on duty without instruction(Mooch or anyone, even Dave).Earl protected his "turf." He will be "on-air" less during this transition. He did some of his jobs after hours, considered his night work, like bookings, production etc music .... and was comfortable working alone and at his own pace, like he lived there. Stop me if I'm making too much sense :)

Maybe it's just how long he's been connected to the show, but if it is for real, I will definitely miss Earl. His knowledge of music definitely added to show. But the regular abuse he took from everyone was always good comedy. Plus does this mean black jokes will have to be considered unacceptably racist?

Anyone else think that Ron sounded hurt by the resignation? I took it as though he was trying to blow it off, but has said many times how much he enjoys being with Earl off the air.

Ron is not only losing a producer, but a best friend, too.

I hope he can repair his relationship with his miscarried child's mother.

On a serious note: Earl urgently needs therapy.

Yes he does. Another reason why he needed to be fired. He acknowledged many times that he had physical and mental issues that required attention. But, he, being lazy Earl, never did anything about it.

I'm just thrilled he's gone. Personally, I like it when the show makes me think or laugh or feel something (anything) other than blind rage at a racist stammering unfunny liar.

Its somewhat bittersweet when anyone moves on after being in a position for so long, just look at all the people sad about dubya today. On a relative scale I think its compairable to earl, and for that he can be proud...and slink away to his ranch in queens.

Sorry sir, but you are dead wrong. If an employee needs mental help, it is an unethical employer that "fires" said employee for this problem.

I know you wanna shit on Earl and have done so repeatedly, but this is NOT a reason to fire an employee.

You misunderstand me. I do not think he needs to fired for his mental and physical conditions. It is his refusal to seek help that is the reason to fire him. Example- If a person refuses to take medication that is prescribed and due to that they keep passing out at work, would an employer not be allowed to fire the person? Refusing to take them for no principled reason like religious beliefs.
Moreover, allowing Earl to coast is not doing him any service. The earlier he is allowed to fail, the easier his recovery will be. Ron & Fez can not be counted on carrying him for another 20 years. Earl should have been forced to find a new career years ago. One that he can excel at, allowing him to coast has hurt him as much as the show.
If Earl takes a position of no authority that would be ok, but it is a FUCKING joke that Earl is the Ron & Fez representative to management and outside contacts. An EP passing out in his soup during a business dinner. Come on.
Or keep him as EP. Just STOP talking about how bad he is during the show.

IMO, Earl is looking for a major payday. I'd be surprised if his attorney has not already written the standard nastygram to Sirius threatening discrimination litigation if he is not paid off quickly. And BTW, if they don't pay, and his attorney is worth his/her salt, you will see the media trot out every racially (in)sensitive off-the-cuff comment that Ron, Fez, Opie, Anthony, etc. made over the past 10 years. Could make the ridiculous Imus hysteria look like Heidi. I could be wrong, but I'm just saying.

That actually makes a lot of sense.
Earl sees $$$$ that his skill set could never provide for himself.
I do think he'd be conflicted to screw over the boys, but the scenario is not out of the question.
Back in the day at NEW, O and A got in trouble for something(I believe it was Voyeur Bus) and Earl hooked them up with attorney Michael Hardy who represented Sharpton and others in civil matters.
Don't know. Just saying it's possible.

Actually in fairness to ESD he's not bad when he's not in character. He brings some decent dialog to the show and is good for a laugh. My problem is when he goes into fucktwat the clown, guy guyerson, the bearded joker or paul mccartney mode it makes me want to jam a fork into my ears. There's hack radio, there's morning zoo radio then there's ESD trying to do voices.....its the third level of radio hell.

Get real.I'm no radio professional but I have listened to enough of it to know that isn't going to happen. On air personalities and producers have to have clauses in their contracts that prevent them from suing, otherwise you could never have a woman on a show. They would all sue for sexual harassment.
