Bankrupt Circuit City Stores Inc., unable to work out a sale of the company, said Friday it will go out of business - closing its 567 U.S. stores and cutting 30,000 jobs.

Another one bites the dust...

One of the newest shopping centers to built here had both Circuit City and Linens 'N Things as a major part of their retail shops. It might be time to start converting all of that dead retail space into homeless shelters. The good news is, maybe it will be easier to get teenagers to mow lawns and shovel snow out of driveways for extra cash.

D'oh!!!

I kinda liked them better than best buy, the last few times I had to buy something CC had it and BB didn't.

Sales start today.

last time i was in a Circuit City (several months ago), the shelves were bare, and there was hardly any staff working there. it was rather depressing.

i guess that's what happens when you fire the knowledgeable staff to hire low-cost, know-nothing replacements, then eliminate commissions for the sales staff.

good riddance to a terrible store.

I feel bad for the workers, even if they weren't the brightest.

I worked for Toys R Us when it was a good company, and in the retail world Circuit City was always considered a joke management wise. Best Buy on the other hand was considered a good place to go in retail.

"good riddance" indeed.

Though I had to drive at least 40 miles to find a Circuit City in the late 80's or early 90's, I loved them at the time. They had a policy of selling you the next best product, if they didn't have a regularly stocked item on hand. For instance, I went to one to buy their cheapest turntable cartridge. They didn't have the cheapest one in the store, so they sold me one that cost about 15 bucks more, for the price of the cheap one. Service like that, doesn't exist anywhere today.

Whenever I went there, it seemed as if the sales staff was just a bunch of kids standing around bullshitting with one another, Best Buy is usually the other extreme, where people never leave you the fuck alone.

The sales aren't going to be any good. Just like CompUSA, the liquidation is a marketing tool to think you are getting a good deal but you aren't.

I owe them money for a tv. Can I cut a deal and give them less now that they really need the cash?

i guess thats why they have no prices on their website

They really took the plunge o' shit last year. I wanted to buy a case fan and found they had eliminated all the guys who used to work there and only customer service reps were ringing up customers. There was one other guy in front of me on line, and I stood there for over ten minutes 'till I finally said fuck it and left.

Never good to see a business go down, but this one you could see coming a mile away.

I truly think it was how they promoted their products. Who can forget this gem!?

CC imo is better than Best Buy in not only web offers but price to beat. You could take a Best Buy circular into CC and they would beat the price. I do not need floor people trying to give me their opinion, I have already done the research and know exactly what I want.

Screw it, I order just about everything online. I just feel bad that this economy is screwing workers.

It was their own undoing that started a bunch of years ago. They fired commissioned salesmen, then they fired management, now everyone is gone.

Yeah. 10% off isn't really a liquidation. I stopped by one in Albany tonight cause' it was nearby. Madhouse. No deals. It's a joke.

I think it will be like when Tower Records closed down. The closer it got to having no products left, the more marked down the prices were. I picked up like 12 CDs for like $36.. Granted, it was CDs but give it time and im sure things will be less. Id love to get some CDs and Video Games.

What a shit eating store, with a shit eating selection, and a shit eating sales staff.

Gee..I wonder why you went belly up.

Well said. I stopped going there years ago. Their stores were awful, their staff were honestly morons in most of my experiences and I never found a good deal. I also was never a fan of their return policy either. There's also a significant difference in the atmosphere between going to a Best Buy and Circuit City also. I think regardless of the economy it was a matter of time before they were going to go out of business anyway. If anything it sped up the inevitable.

I worked at CC a few years back, I'd bring home 250-400 a day in commissions. After xmas that year they ended commission sales so I wandered off.

Few years later they simply fired people....

Now we're one step closer to the best buy wal-mart (lowes or home depot) world.

Theres a bunch of stores by me that have just gone out of business. I look at them as places to squat when this recession turns to depression turns to anarchy turns to the end.

Couldn't it be said that in the internet retail world that a store like Circuit City needs to "add value" for the consumer or they will perish?

Let's see:

Their prices sucked.
Their service sucked.

Outside of location, they seemed to have nothing going for them. That's probably why when you go to Best Buy they kiss the hell out of your arse. Their business model is smart enough to realize that electronics is a mystery to many and they want to provide you with the perception of "value-added service".

In recent years, the only reason I'd go there was if I needed something right away, or when my brother would give me a gift card for Christmas. Fortunately, he gave me cash this year. My father shopped there a lot when they still had lots of rebates shit. He loved to check out the sale papers every week and buy anything that ended up free after rebate. He had a closet that was full of random shit that you could go to if you needed random stuff like CDR's, universal remotes, phones, disc drives, etc. Hardly any store does that anymore, though.

Circuit City had one of the best return policies out there. I'd buy any big money electronics from them because they'd take stuff back no questions asked.

As TJM said, all circuity city credit cards, those accounts will be sold off to a bank and then they will become responsible for it. You're still stuck paying the bill. I would advise checking to make sure your APR doesn't spike or something. If it does, Balance Transfer.

I always saw a lot of wasteful spending in Circuit City, and their point of service registers were horrifically outdated. When you're using the same terminal I saw them use in 1993 - yikes.

I also couldn't understand why their receipts were like twice the size and length of other stores.

I have the desire to get a external hard drive, a 500 gig Western Digital mybook. I saw one on Amazon for $89.00 I figured I would stop by Circut City on my way home tonight because they have these big 10% off signs right near where I work and figured if it was similar priced, Id buy it and have it right away. They had it, but it was $150! I was like, fuck this. No wonder they are going out of beeswax. Id like to keep my money local if I can to help the economy, but this is why Tower Records went out of business too.

Here's the thing about these sales: yeah, it's 10% off, but that's not 10% off the price you remember it being last time you saw it, it's 10% off full retail price. So in these early days of the sale, things might actually be more expensive.

And, ofc ourse, by the time it gets to 75% or 90% percent, it's all a bunch of shit anyway.
