I graduate from welding school in April, I can't find any jobs around here in North Jersey. I've been hearing about shipbuilders in VA as well as at Disney in Orlando both looking for welders.

Any other welders on this board or do you guys at least know welders? Maybe I'm looking too forward but I'm a bit frightened about not being able to find work once I get out.

Manny contact your local carpenters union. The NYC carpenters Union has a dock builders division. they might hire you since you already know how to weld.

How about the boilermakers union or getting hooked up with an outfit that does industrial maintenance with welding. A lot of power facility maint. mechanics are expected to also be welders.

I know that there are a lot of guys that work specifically in the field of boiler, and steam and high pressure hot water repair also. If you get good - you'd really be in demand.

If I find of any way to give you a hand specifically I'll let you know, but those are the areas I can think of off the top of my head.

Come to think of it, the boiler and chiller repair guys - that do tubes and plates, if they get good at it, are sent all over the world to do jobs and get paid well.

I hear the pipelines in Alaska are getting pretty run down.

I once wanted to learn advanced welding to design and build custom racing bicycles, but they are mostly carbon fiber now. Good thing I didn't spend too much time on that venture.

Welding school?

Here's one piece of metal, here's another, melt them together. A+.

I kid of course. Try looking for metal working shops in your area.

Sheet metal shops, pipe shops, machine shops and others of the like are always looking for good talent. I say talent because welding is not something you just pick up and do. Whether you to tig, stick or gas, you are now an artist. Do check out the local unions too. Good luck to you.

just make sure that you test into journeymen and that whomever you are applying with has that option
thats very important as far as your income will go

That's a great point. I've seen guys in the middle of horrifying environments, dangerous dirty places, working in that medium who have the same touch and care with their work as any village froofypants.

I work for a gas utility, and there is always welding going on. Try that or the water department. Plumbers weld too, and they make decent money.
