I had one today for the first time in a LONG time and it was magically delicious!

In Jersey there was a drive up A&W that was only open in the summer and would serve the drink in frosted mugs which I would pair with a hot dog and fries. We never had it at home and always had it there so it was a special occasion when we did.

I've even gotten a keg of it for a party before. Who else loves this drink?

I rarely drink soda these days, but when I do, it's delicious root beer...and not just any delicious root beer, but THIS:

Goose Island root beer.

GI is a local Chicago brewer, and I actually picked up a case of their root beer by mistake thinking I was grabbing a case of the winter brew.

One of the best mistakes I've ever made.

SO good.

Root beer has always been one of my favorites. From Root beer Barrels to Root beer Popsicle. A&W was great back in the day. I'm not a huge fan of there bottled or canned product now though. I like the Mug Root Beer Brand.

haven't had pop in close to 3 years.

Years ago, I used to work at a drive-in that was modeled after the A&W drive-ins. Root beer was our specialty. We sold it by the mug, quart, half-gallon, and gallon. We made the root beer there in these big vats. I remember one vat would take 35 pounds of sugar. It was the best root beer I've ever had.

CHUCKWAGONCOOK you just like that little bulldog, that's why you drink that brand. I bet you want a shirt of it.

Actually, it was birch beer that we got a keg of for the BBQ after my wedding. I'll have to check that site out. I love those sodas!

Haha, I always wonder what people think when they see me with a bottle of root beer at noon when it totally looks like a beer.

That's just a bonus of shelling out for the bottled quality...look like a beer-drinking badass!

Boo!!

There is a large statistical area that calls it pop. From parts of Ohio (as far west as Toledo) to as far south as PA (Pittsburgh) and east (Syracuse) and yes north (most of Ontario).

But, no I am not Canadian. I grew up hearing people say, "you bake with soda and you drink pop". The term used to be soda pop. So, it's just as regional as it is for people from long island to place a 'w' in words with an 'L'. Mawl instead of mall.

Either way, I approve of root beer.

I just wanted to prove a point. No offense taken.

Maybe you should join the revolution and call it 'pop'.

It's tough being from a city known for wings and losing sports teams.

Probably the best root beer I have ever tasted. As far as the pop thing goes when I used to live up in Ft. Wayne (Northern Indiana) people called it pop. I use brand names because I dont like pepsi so If I order a coke and they dont carry it I can order an iced tea. However root beer has always been root beer for me.

I was shopping tonight and walked by this root beer. Thinking of this thread forced me to buy this.

My friend used to work at the Harpoon Brewery and would bring me their small batch Root Beer and Creme Soda. Good shit.

Boylan's Root Beer has got to be the best in the business.

You know you're in a well respected deli if they have these babies in the fridge.

I like Boylan's but I'm also partial to Stewart's and Barq's.

And I had Root 66 once when I was in Charlottesville on business. It kind of had a smoky taste to it, which I found to be very interesting.

I like Barq's because it has caffeine.

This. I cannot stand caffeine-free soda. Also there is a crisper taste to Barq's; I find most other root beers to be disappointingly flat.

One might say it even has bite.

sorry

Edit: in all seriousness I think that barqs has a stronger wintergreen taste which replaced sassafras when it was found to be carcinogenic.

Aggie.....Root Beer v. Dr. Pepper.....

you can only have one for the rest of your life. which do you choose?

I really love a nice cold glass of A&W or Mug, or a cold bottle of boylans. Right now I am working on a 4 pack of Stewart's I bought today, but I really don't think it is as good as the others (Plus they use high fructose corn syrup and the stuff is expensive,,,, wtf??) barq's is ok every once and a while

At the end of the day I don't care the brand, root beer is really the best soda hands down (or is it Dr. Pepper..... now I can't choose). But I try to avoid caffeine so root beer is a good bet regardless of brand.

There's this guy named Anthony and he's tried and reviewed an incredible amount of root beer http://rootbeerbarrel.com/. even if you don't read the reviews just seeing the sheer amount of brands that exist.... it's amazing.

Boylan's Root Beer is my favorite hands down. I like A&W also when I can get it fresh at the local A&W restaurant and getting a root beer float there. Virgils, Stewarts, and Dr Brown's are also good.

Barq's is amazing just in taste alone. Not too sweet yet has that root beer bite.

I have only recently seen A&W's here in Jersey but growing up it was Stewart's Root Beer or nothing! I think a drank a half gallon of it on the way to Sandy Hook once as a kid. Still love it!
