So I got a new food dehydrator for Christmas and I just made my first batch of jerkey. It came out way better than I expected from a recipie I got off the interwebs. here it is:

2 lb. of beef - round steak (or any meat type)
1/4 c. soy sauce
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. cyanne pepper
2 tsp. curing salt
2 Tb. liquid smoke
2 Tb. Worcestershire
Directions:

Combine ingredients and coat the meat thoroughly.
Cover the meat still marinating in the bowl and let sit in the fridge for as long as you prefer.
Take out, rinse off and pat dry with paper towels to get the excess off.
Dry out at least 4 hours or to your preference and enjoy!

Anyone else get into this at all, or have any good dehydrator recipies?

I've been eating the dehydrated fruit for months now.
Pears and apricots are the jam.

I need a new food dehydrator and I tried to make turkey jerky once but it turned out shitty. Anyone know of a good way to make turkey jerky?

I made banana chips like crazy, and you can make some interesting potato chips using a dehydrator, I will look online because I forget the recipe. Oh, and apple chips FTW.

I am suddenly very interested in this food dehydrator. I didn't know that's how you make these things. I wanna play with Tom's food dehydrator!

The only thing is I bought a 2 pound briscit for 10 bucks and got whatever the jerky yield is less then 2 lbs and its like 8 bucks a pound in the store. Its not as good as what I made, but isn't it supposed to be more cost effective?

Alright, forget sushi we'll have a dehydrated dinner, it'll just be a long time cooking.

2# brisket? Oh, that's right you are a yank.

That is a hell of a lot less than what you'd pay for store bought jerky. Not only that but what you are making is healthier since you are not adding the preservatives that store bought companies add.

Pineapple rocks too on the dehydrator, yum! I am pricing one now.

.

What does that mean? Was the cut of meat wrong or the amount?

No, I've been looking forward to sushi way too much to change it now.

I wonder if anybody's ever tried dehydrating sushi...

Laboob thought they were just very thirsty food.

In all honesty Ive never tried to make jerkey and I am curious as to how some of these turn out. I am willing to (as the official rf.net food guy) plug your jerky like it was a moist Don Rigo cigar. Pm me if you get generous otherwise take some photos lets see this food.

Just goofing with you. We call that a small roast down here where a (what we call it) brisket averages 12 pounds here and takes about 6 hours to prepare and smoke to just right..

I made a fruit rollup... but it sucked. Banana chips same thing. Jerky comes out great. I think the timing/temperature chart ours came with is way off.

Can't wait for the BTTF2 pizza hut re-hydrator.

I finally found a good recipe, now I just want the dehydrator. Back then when I tried to make the turkey jerky the internet was still new to many people so I could not look up recipes.

Venison jerky is yummy. You should try that. How much did you pay for it? I love kitchen toys but it seems I'm running out of room to store them all.

On a side note, Texas A&M is a historically agricultural school if you didn't know and we have an amazing butcher shop on campus. They have famous jerky. You can order it here:

My brother makes jerky all the time.. beef, turkey, venison. I don't like jerky myself but everyone says it's really good.

I love dried apple chips, apricots, cranberries, raisins and figs.
Dried pineapple and bananas.. eh not so much.

Venison jerky rocks! And A&M makes great jerky so I suggest any jerky lovers visit that site.

For the bananas and pineapple it depends a lot on how you dry it and if you use anything such as sugar or cinnamon to before dehydration. Apple and banana chips rock with a little peanut butter or some preserves.

So an update: I brought in the first batch and shared it with the guys in my gang at work. They told me it was the best jerky they ever had (my foreman is an avid jerky maker so this was especially cool coming from him). We ate 3/4 of the whole batch by 2:00 and one of the guys paid me $20 for the rest. Really great results for a first try.

My foreman is bringing me in some fresh butchered venison tomorrow and I work a 5 minute train ride from NYC.

For the record, banana chips (which are not really healthy) are not dehydrated banana slices; they are fried banana slices. Dehydrated banana slices would just be called dried banana slices, which would be soft and brown, like any other dried fruit. Most health food stores sell dehydrated bananas if you are interested in trying them before wasting a bunch of bananas and then throwing them out because they are disgustingly reminiscent of a squashed, dried banana slug.
