Texas rocks...you get to stay home if there is even a threat of ice or snow. I emailed my boss and said I didn't feel comfortable driving in the ice and voila! I'm home, comfy, drinking my coffee and posting.

Suckers.

Actually, they are both strong right now. Dallas has tons of people from all over the country living here. There are not a ton of native Texans like in Houston.

Just one of the perks of a warm climate. They only have so many salt/sanding trucks and there are SO many overpasses and bridges. It's just not economical to keep all of the gear on hand like in the north.

It's perfect because it still gets chilly/cold in the winter but it doesn't last long. A few days ago it was 75 and sunny. Now we have a few days of ice, then it will be back in the 60s by the end of the week!

Growing up in Texas they would cancel school for any threat of ice or snow. Sometimes they would cancel it for frost on the ground.

It's sunny and 12 here. There's a threat that there might be a foot of snow by tomorrow morning. That's just called a given.

I need an ice day.

One night I was pulled over for speeding while vacationing in Florida in some pretty decent weather. I was only going ten miles over the speed limit and only got a warning. When the female state trooper gave me back my license (after seeing I was from New Jersey) she says to me with a completely straight face: "Be careful because we can get some black ice on these roads and, I don't know what you're used to up north, but you don't ever want hit a patch of Florida black ice." I said: "Thank you I'll be sure to be more careful." Then me and the people riding in the car with me laughed our asses off as we drove off into the treacherous Florida frozen tundra.

What's wrong with natives?

Katja, Texas has long been insulated from the rest of the nation's economy thanks to the energy sector. Even when the energy sector starts to go down our economy will shift to another sector and maintain. We have not had a state deficit like California and New York in many years.

Nothing is wrong with natives, I just feel more comfortable in Dallas than I did in Houston and I think it's due to all the Yankees that live here. I love Texas or I wouldn't live here. I'm just trying to think of it from a view of people coming from the northeast down here. I find Dallas/Fort Worth to feel more like "home."

But all in all native Texans are great and very welcoming.

it's a warm 20 degrees here & we're expecting 7 to 16 inches of snow tomorrow. supposed to be only a few inches in the morning & just go on all day. can't wait. i wonder if i'll be allowed to stay home tomorrow.

i don't think my tiny car can handle it.

Well, if I know what you mean...and I think I do. You're correct about 90% of Mississippi but I will say the northern-most part of it is nice. Tupelo, Oxford, and the Mississippi side of Memphis suburbs are nice places to live.

You're very welcome. I need to get that bumper sticker "I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!"

As for the melting pot, after living in College Station for 5 years (yes, it took me five years to graduate) Dallas feels like NYC!

its so icy here (and hailing). I took a late lunch and when i got back to the office, after 2 hours i got back to my car and it took me 20 minutes to scrape the ice off just so it felt somewhat safe to drive. I felt like i was in fargo

Can't drive on the roads yet, there was freezing rain last night and now it's a sheet of ice. It's starting to melt so I'll probably have to go in around noon.

At least I got to sleep in a little.

Nice! It does rule. Where are you?

It doesn't hurt we have about a million bridges and overpasses in the D/FW area so it's bound to be bad and people can stay home.
