Wait! Oh yes wait a minute Mr. Postman!

What music are you into now?

Do you have a leaning towards more hard rock or lighter or even a country style?

You will find there are lots of people on this board that will chime in on this thread.

thats a good song...i know every word. download the full "Quebec" album and see what you like and see what you dislike and just go from there (because their sound is very diverse depending on which album you are checking out)

I would say the best thing he could do is to buy a pass for this year's festival (it's held in mid-March) and spend those four days just wandering from bar to bar. He'll end up hearing every kind of indie rock, folk, country, noise, etc. imaginable.

I went 15 years or so ago and it was the greatest week of my life. I can only imagine how amazing it would be to go with no previous knowledge of any of the acts.

i feel the need to rant. There is no genre called 'indie music.' Indie refers to the size of the record label. What people call indie music can be practically any genre, and any sound.

I don't blame you guys, but it drives me fucking crazy. I blame the fucking hipsters who in the quest to stay edgy, labels everything they hear that comes from a small label as indie, and raises it up a fucking flag pole.

Personally, I feel that most Indie music falls under the "Folk" category. As Mike seeger (of the new lost city ramblers, and pete's brother) one said: "Folk Music is the space in between" Everything that you can't classify is "folk music." but of course, when people think of folk they think of douches in checkered shirts belting out 3 part harmonies or 1 douche with a guitar who doesnt bathe. They forget that what folk really is, the music of the people.

I have to disagree with you, but mainly it's just a problem with language. "Indie" is both a financial model and a musical style. When someone says Indie Rock there is a definate aesthetic there, and you're right there is a definate folk influence as well as pop and other stuff. I became aware of the concept of Indie Rock as a style in the late 90s when I was still in HS, way before I started meeting people I would call hipsters. But really, a hipster is just someone who is more of a hipster than you; we're all fine with ourselves but anything more is just unbearable.

Kimya Dawson is an independant act, but shes by no means and Indie Rock act. I think this gentleman just means non corporate music, though.

And there are a lot of great bands, but I would say download Rilo Kiley- The Initial Friend EP right fucking now.

Forget Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis has a solo album called Acid Tounge, it kicks serious ass. In my opinion after hearing it I think Rilo Kiley was holding her back.

You should tell us what you've heard and liked.

And people who argue about music genres on message boards really need to let go, you label music so people can have a general idea what to expect.

I think it really depends when you came into Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis' career. Since I got into them before there were any solo records I really really miss the song writing and structure of the Rilo Kiley records when I hear her solo stuff. I vastly prefer all of the Rilo Kiley records (except Under the Black Light) to the Jenny Lewis albums. And I think Rabit Fur Coat blows Acid Tongue out of the water because it is just more similar to Rilo Kiley, and likewise I'm not crazy about Black Light because it plays like a Jenny Lewis solo record.

If you want to hear someone concentrate on singing and telling stories with their songs pick up the Jenny Lewis records, if you want less traditional song structure and more impressionistic lyrics go for Rilo Kiley.

I'm definitely an in song narritive type of guy. I know this guy records under a big label now, but he didn't always.
Ray LaMontagne, check him out. He's my personal favorite these days, crazy Smokey soul voice and really beautiful narritive songs. And If you play guitar, his songs are pretty easy to pick up. Trust me and enjoy.

If you wanna go a slightly different route, go find some Uncle Tupelo and then move on to their spinoffs, Son Volt and Wilco. Do the same thing with Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams. If you like that stuff, there's also the Jayhawks.

Where'd you start with Pavement? If you want some true Indie sound go back to Slanted and Enchanted and work forward.

When I think of 'indie music', I think of SST and Matador records back in the eighties. Not only were they small and 'independent' but they had an attitude that made me trust them. Greg Ginn at SST, in my opinion, is one of the fathers of 'indie' music along with Thurston Moore.
These two labels also had 90% of my favorite bands. Sometimes they would sign crap bands but I always trusted that they would sign bands because they thought they had good, interesting music.

Let's add Sebadoh to this list. Give them a spin. Granted none of the suggestion I make are going to be current 'Indie Rock' they are all part of the same idea.
