Michael Steele becomes first black RNC chairman (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/republicans;_ylt=AmxYdjT8aj_EMOPvoTMADMqs0NUE;_ylu =X3oDMTI1azgwdmd2BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMDkwMTMwL3JlcHVib GljYW5zBHBvcwM3BHNlYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcnkEc2xrA21pY2h hZWxzdGVlbA--)

Michael Steele was elected Republican National Committee chairman on Friday, defeating the incumbent party chief and three other challengers over six rounds of voting to become the first black to lead the GOP. The former Maryland lieutenant governor takes over a beleaguered GOP as Republicans seek to rebound from back-to-back defeats in national elections that gave Democrats control of Congress and the White House.

Alright, I don't agree with a word that Steele has ever said...but good for the GOP for adding a bit of diversity to their leadership on the national level. I hope this sends a message to their leadership throughout the country.

Heh heh heh, yeah, he tried to hide the fact that he was a Republican, implied he was a Democrat, bused in a bunch of black folks from Philly who didn't know better to help him, and falsely claimed he had the support of black leaders.

More fun facts about your new RNC chairman:

On other fronts, though, Steele's a questionable choice. He hasn't displayed a ton of political acumen -- he's won elected office only once, and he didn't head that ticket. He lost the aforementioned Senate race, and, before that, couldn't even win a GOP primary for state comptroller; he placed third, in fact. His tenure as head of the Maryland party wasn't brilliant, either, and he repeatedly had trouble recruiting candidates. (In his defense, it's not easy to be a Republican in the state.) Along the way, he's made some serious missteps: He got in trouble in 2006 for making some unguarded remarks disparaging then-President Bush to a group of reporters. His name was supposed to be kept off the comments, but when it quickly became obvious who was responsible, Steele tried to lie his way out of the gaffe. Also in 2006, he attracted unwanted attention when, speaking before a Jewish group, he compared stem cell research to medical tests that the Nazis conducted on prisoners during the Holocaust.

And on his academic career:

. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and then got a law degree from Georgetown University, true. That said, though, he initially flunked out of Hopkins, and while he did pass the bar in Pennsylvania, he failed it in Maryland. His record as a businessman wasn't stellar, either. A consulting firm he founded never turned a profit, and was a serious drain on his finances. Shortly after he began his run for lieutenant governor, Steele ran into trouble because of a $25,000 loan his sister had given to his campaign for comptroller that he'd never paid back. Then, there were revelations of an additional $35,000 in personal debt, as well as more than $100,000 he'd taken out of two retirement accounts in order to support his family, leaving a balance of less than $600 at the time the news broke. He suffered further embarrassment over his finances when it was revealed that the Republican Party was paying him a consulting fee of $5,000 a month during his campaign for lieutenant governor.

Yeah, just the man to lead the GOP into the 21st century.

He was/is dumb for making those remarks. Just as people who compared Bush to Hitler were/are dumb.

It doesn't shock me though to know that he said that. A lot of people, rather dumbly, view stem cell research as an evil act. He was playing to a crowd and he made the comparison linking a certain evil with another "evil".

I don't know if people have noticed, but Steele is currently in a shitload of trouble with the "Limbaugh"-wing of the party. After Rush started talking crazy he appeared on the DL Hughley show last month:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/W4EWB0Wc4wQ&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/W4EWB0Wc4wQ&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

During that appearance he referred to the "entertainer" Rush Limbaugh delivering ugly and incendiary words about President Obama. He also refuted the notion that Limbaugh was the "defacto" head of the Republican Party.

This of course caused an uproar in the party and basically caused Michael Steele to apologize:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MRxv-bcrsns&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MRxv-bcrsns&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

But Steele's apology didn't stop at that: (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0309/19517.html)

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says he has reached out to Rush Limbaugh to tell him he meant no offense when he referred to the popular conservative radio host as an “entertainer” whose show can be “incendiary.”

“My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh,” Steele said in a telephone interview. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. ... There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”

...Steele, who won a hard-fought chairman's race on Jan. 30, told Politico he telephoned Limbaugh after his show on Monday afternoon and hoped that they would connect soon.

“I went back at that tape and I realized words that I said weren’t what I was thinking,” Steele said.

So does this mean that Rush Limbaugh is the head of the Republican Party? Because it's damned obvious to me that Michael Steele isn't.

Rumor: Steele May Face No Confidence Vote (http://politicalwire.com/archives/2009/03/10/steele_may_face_no_confidence_vote.html)

Republican insiders tell Political Wire that a no confidence vote on RNC Chairman Michael Steele is likely to be called after the NY-20 special election on March 31 -- regardless of whether Republicans win the seat or not.

Katon Dawson, who came in second in the January RNC vote, is said to be quietly organizing a vote and is getting the support of several state party chairmen who want to dump Steele.

Now this is purely a rumor, but its tasty shit. If the RNC dumps Steele in favor of Katon Kawson...a man with former segregationist links...it would be pure gold from my perspective.

New Republican Party site crashes hours after launch (http://features.csmonitor.com/innovation/2009/10/13/new-republican-party-site-crashes-hours-after-launch/)

There’s a metaphor lurking in here somewhere. The same day GOP Chairman Michael Steele unveiled a new online home for the Republican Party, the website apparently crashed, leaving users unable to log on to GOP.com.

The site was meant to rival the digital operation run by the Democrats and President Barack Obama, who used social networking to great effect in the 2008 elections. GOP.com has a YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr presence, and an array of blogs, including the “What Up” blog, which will be penned by Steele himself.

Exclusive: RNC document mocks donors, plays on 'fear' (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0310/33866.html)

The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on “fear” of President Barack Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism."

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how “ego-driven” wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and “tchochkes.

Michael Steele is my favorite.

FEC report details lavish Republican spending, including nearly $2,000 at Voyeur West Hollywood (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/03/rnc-spends-money-on-private-pl.html?wprss=44)

The Republican National Committee gave nearly $2,000 to a Southern California GOP contributor for meal expenses at Voyeur West Hollywood, a lesbian-themed California nightclub that features topless dancers wearing horse-bits and other bondage gear, according to newly filed disclosure records.

The RNC said Monday it is investigating the disbursement of the money to Erik Brown of Orange, Calif., who has donated about $10,000 to GOP candidates and is listed in public records as the CEO of Dynamic Marketing Inc., with offices in California and Washington. Brown did not immediately respond Monday to messages left by telephone and e-mail.

The Feb. 4 nightclub disbursement was included as part of the RNC's monthly expense reports filed with the Federal Election Commission last week. The reports also included tens of thousands of dollars in expenditures for luxury jets, limousines and posh hotels, prompting further criticism from Democrats and some Republicans over the spending habits of RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

I hope Michael Steele keeps that job forever.
