Phelps acknowledges photo showing him smoking pot
TAMPA, Fla., Sun Feb 01, 12:47 PM
Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.
In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.
Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

I understand why he had to apologize-- he'd lose sponsorship deals and that's his bread and butter.
This guy won the love of America when he won all those metals. Admit it-- you felt a swell of patriotism.
What sucks is that he got "caught" doing something, that maybe he shouldn't have, on his own time. The kid won 14 metals. Let him have a little fun-- do a bong hit. Date a stripper. He's 23 and WON 14 GOLD METALS.
Like athletes never did shit like this before? It was just a completely different time for the media and how they portrayed sports heroes. Like Mark Spitz never had an orgy in his hot tub? PUHLEAZE! Greg, I love you, but you are delusional. It WAS the 70s after all.

I could care less that he smoked. But, maybe it will help, in the slightest, ridding the country of the notion that pot is so harmful.
But, it is BS that Phelps' gets so much attention for winning his medals. He is in a sport that allows you to win that many medals. If I am the greatest wrestler in the world how many different wrestling medals can I win? If I am the greatest basketball player, how many medals can I win?
They need to cut down on all the different lengths and relays and other nonsense. Phelps merely proved that if you are good at one, they are so similar that you will be good at the others. He is a great athlete, maybe the greatest swimmer ever, but he gets more credit than he deserves.
Swimming should be limited to a very short race akin to a sprint, and a very long race like a marathon, that's it. It is the same with running, the intermediate races are a waste of time.
In my, uninformed, opinion.

Long distance Swimming is considered another sport entirely. It has been around for years and they are planning on adding it back into the Olympics in the next 12 years..standard distances are the 2000 5000 and 15000 meter races..for obvious reasons it is generally held in open water, also there are longer distances..Some guy from Bulgaria just won a race of 52 km in under 9 hours.
In Olympic Swimming
The Sprint is 50 Meters
The distance event..the 1500 meters
Most swimmers at that level are specialized into Distances and Stroke.
Swim Meets have shortened over the years by cutting events..
Gone is the Plunge For Distance....where you dove in stayed streamline and got points for how long and how far you went underwater.
Gone is the Steeple Chase swim..a race in a lake that the competitiors swam to and climbed over and swam under obstacles like boats, nets, and barrels.
Gone is the Naval Relay..a race only for members of the Navy.
Gone are the Side Stroke races.
Gone is the Two man Relay.

I said that long distance is different.
Phelps won all his medals for 100m to 400m races. With 3 different strokes I think. Not exactly entirely different "sports."
He won the gold for the 200m freestyle, then the 200m freestyle relay. How is that different enough to warrant another medal. He won the 100m butterfly, then the 100m medley relay using the butterfly. Again, the same stroke but another medal.
It is stupid. It needs to be cut down more.

Do you swim competitively?
If you don't or if you never did, shut up about it already.
The events are different because RELAYS, in case you hadn't noticed, are TEAM events, while medals for individual strokes are INDIVIDUAL events.
While there's no difference in the stroke itself, when you put together a relay team, you'd better make DAMN sure you get the best fucking swimmers in each stroke together in a medley or whoever your swimmers work best with together for a single-stroke (freestyle) relay.
Swimming an individaul heat for backstroke is a HELL of a lot different from swimming it as a relay member. It's the same for fly or free. (All of which I've swum in my past competitive swimming "career" as a kid.)
The medals earned as part of a TEAM aren't individual medals and are therefore a different event. They should be counted in the country's totals, and individuals can claim them as medals they earned because each member of a relay team works just as hard as the others.

I know the events are different. My point is that they are not different enough to warrant another medal. Look at the all medal winners, it is dominated by swimmers and track athletes, because they compete in too many similar events.
Why not have a basketball game with a 9 foot hoop and than another with a 10 foot hoop. It would change the game. But would it really be a different event worthy of another medal.
I know relays are team events. But it is an individual effort within a "team" concept.
I will continue to post, after considering your polite suggestion that I stop.

There is a 4X100 relay. That is what I meant if it wasn't clear.
Why not have a 100m sprint, a 150m sprint, a 200m sprint? Because they are too similar. That is my feeling on the swim meets.

there is a 50/100/200/400/800/1500 m freestyle, a 100/200 m Back, a 100/200 m Breast, a 100/200 m Fly, and a 200/400 m IM
Depends on your sex
And the relays are the 200/400/800 m Free and the 200/400/800 m Medley relay.
I guess I do know more about swimming than you. One of Phelps' medals was for the 4X100 relay. Unless, he really didn't win it and it was just a conspiracy to break Sptiz's record.
Look it up. Isn't learning fun?

Look it up. Isn't learning fun?it is called the 400 meter free relay. They puy it as the 4x100 free relay for the stupid who don't understand swimming.
I don't have to look it up...I was up all night doing meet entries..and the entry computer program and paper entry form say 400 free relay.
Phelps and his team won it not just him.

I just wish they'd return the speed-walking to track and field.
Ain't no way anyone could do that all stoned and all....

I'll defer to the International Olympic Committee that calls it the 4X100. But that is not the issue. There are too many similar swimming and track events.

I don't think it will affect how much he'll say. And I would hope people base their purchases over the quality of the brand rather than because so and so used it.
"Sell". Not say.

While I don't care that he smoked pot. If I was a sponsor that paid he possibly tens of millions of dollars to promote my product, I might care. I gave him that money because of what he stood for, now if he stands for something else, I would possibly want out of the deal.
It is part of being a celebrity. Part of your paycheck is based on your personal life. You may not like it, but you have to accept the consequences.
That's exactly Michael Wilbon's argument in today's Washington Post. You give up your right to F up when you accept sponsorship money.

Oh, I don't know.
Some celebrities have no problem getting sponsorship money or any other financial support after getting busted for dope.
I mean, the Rolling Stones got sponsors galore clamoring every time they tour...
Sponsors may or may not take away their sponsorship, but when it is someone really big, they may regret it, later...

USA Swimming suspends Phelps for 3 months
By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP National Writer 16 minutes ago
Michael Phelps was suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming, the latest fallout from a photo that showed the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe.
The sport’s national governing body also cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period, effective Thursday.
“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the Colorado-based federation said in a statement.
“Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”
Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing and returned to America as one of the world’s most acclaimed athletes. Now he’s enduring a wave of bad news in the wake of the photo, published Sunday by News of the World, a British tabloid.
Earlier Thursday, cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. announced it wouldn’t renew its sponsorship contract with Phelps, saying his behavior is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.” The swimmer appeared on the company’s cereal boxes after his Olympic triumph.
Phelps has acknowledged “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment.” He didn’t dispute the authenticity of the photo, reportedly taken at a house party while Phelps was visiting Columbia, S.C., in November during an extended break from training.
The 23-year-old has resumed training in his hometown of Baltimore, but his plans to return to competitive swimming will have to be put on hold. Phelps had been planning to compete in early March at a Grand Prix meet in Austin, Texas.
Now, he won’t be able to allowed to compete until early May, which would give him just over two months to get in some racing before July’s world championships in Rome.

what sucks even more is that Kellogg's dropped him as a spokesperson. Didn't Ron say he will stop using any product that drops him from smoking weed? Kellogg is a client of my company, they make so much shit its impossible to avoid them

The suspension is little more than a wrist slap.. he misses 1 meet..but people seem to think that he cannot train..which is not true..spring season is over in less than 2 months..no big..another thing..I am just glad they did not go nuts like some coaches wanted to.

Phelps should stop swimming competitively. Fuck them, they need him more than he needs them now.
He should also endorse a Kellogg competitor for free.
Lock his ass up and throw away the key!
I'm tired of celebs getting special treatment.
Fuck that buck toothed druggie.

If he had smoked weed before he hosted SNL, maybe it would have been a funnier episode.
Some information on John Harvey Kellogg, the founder of Kellogg's:
He was an especially zealous campaigner against masturbation.
He and his wife were married for over 40 years, they never had sexual intercourse and had separate bedrooms all their lives.
He also recommended, to prevent children from this "solitary vice" (masturbation), bandaging or tying their hands, covering their genitals with patented cages, sewing the foreskin shut and electrical shock.
And this company is judging a little weed? That's rich!

Now I really am beginning to think Phelps has wayyy too much money at a young age:
Michael Phelps, on the night he got caught with a bong at a South Carolina fraternity party, had lost upward of $2,000 playing beer pong. Trust me, it's hard to make it in those cups when you can't quit laughing.
"I saw Phelps pull out a roll, a bank-wrapped $2,000. He said, 'I'll match the $2,000,' " onlooker Michael Whitworth told the State newspaper. "Good ol' Phelpsie lost it, too."What Mr. Whitworth didn't tell us was who his partner was. That is who I hold responsible for all these shenanigans.
http://backporch.fanhouse.com/2009/02/10/michael-phelps-lost-thousands-playing-beer-pong-on-bong-night/
Also eight people were arrested by the sheriff for drug posession..including the owner of the bong (who "wasn't at the party") who was trying to sell the bong on ebay for 100,000.
