I want a new National Anthem.
One that people can't "ham-it-up" with,
when they sing it at games.
I'm sick of whiny broads feeling they have to go through the entire
music scale when they sing it, to show off.
Suggestions can be given here...

our anthem is not particularly well written from a musical standpoint and it's hell to sing.
but the story behind it's creation outweighs the negatives... and when sung with heart and without over the top embellishment, as Jennifer Hudson did tonight, it can be a truly moving piece.

unfortunately, some pop divas and divos have taken it upon themselves to rape the song and turn it into a showcase... but there are still many vocalists who can honor the song and make it their own without getting too crazy with it.

i hate the "Tarzan" vocals that R&B singers use when they sing that song

not every word has to go on forever

Gotta disagree here...Hudson may not have been as over the top as a few of them are, but it was still the American Idol-ish overly-dramatic, oversinging where it's all about proving the singer's vocal range rather than deliver the song.

I think our national anthem is awesome. Great back story, good lyrics and it sounds good. You guys are forgetting how old the song is, and how much staying power it's had over the years.

let's keep the anthem. the lyrics are so much more majestic than "America the Beautiful." Don't pussy out and say "it's hard to sing." Of course it's hard to sing. the melody was origianlly an English drinking song, called The Anacreon Song. Original lyrics below. Now try singing THESE to the tune, and appreciate it even more.

To ANACREON in Heav'n, where he sat in full Glee,
A few Sons of Harmony sent a Petition,
That He their Inspirer and Patron wou'd be;
When this Answer arriv'd from the JOLLY OLD GRECIAN
"Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
"No longer be mute,
"I'll lend you my Name and inspire you to boot,
"And, besides, I'll instruct you like me, to intwine
"The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS's Vine.

2
The news through OLYMPUS immediately flew;
When OLD THUNDER pretended to give himself Airs_
If these Mortals are suffer'd their Scheme to pursue,
The Devil a Goddess will stay above Stairs.
"Hark! already they cry,
"In Transports of Joy
"Away to the Sons of ANACREON we'll fly,
"And there, with good Fellows, we'll learn to intwine
"The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

3
"The YELLOW-HAIR'D GOD and his nine fusty Maids
"From HELICON'S Banks will incontinent flee,
"IDALIA will boast but of tenantless Shades,
"And the bi-forked Hill a mere Desart will be
"My Thunder, no fear on't,
"Shall soon do it's Errand,
"And, dam'me! I'll swinge the Ringleaders I warrant,
"I'll trim the young Dogs, for thus daring to twine
"The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

4
APOLLO rose up; and said, "Pr'ythee ne'er quarrel,
"Good King of the Gods with my Vot'ries below:
"Your Thunder is useless_then, shewing his Laurel,
Cry'd. "Sic evitabile fulmen, you know!
"Then over each Head
"My Laurels I'll spread
"So my Sons from your Crackers no Mischief shall dread,
"Whilst snug in their Club-Room, they Jovially twine
"The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

5
Next MOMUS got up, with his risible Phiz,
And swore with APOLLO he'd cheerfull join_
"The full Tide of Harmony still shall be his,
"But the Song, and the Catch, & the Laugh shall bemine
"Then, JOVE, be not jealous
Of these honest Fellows,
Cry'd JOVE, "We relent, since the Truth you now tell us;
"And swear, by OLD STYX, that they long shall entwine
"The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

6
Ye Sons of ANACREON, then, join Hand in Hand;
Preserve Unanimity, Friendship, and Love!
'Tis your's to support what's so happily plann'd;
You've the Sanction of Gods, and the FIAT of JOVE.
While thus we agree
Our Toast let it be.
May our Club flourish happy, united and free!
And long may the Sons of ANACREON intwine
The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

here's another patriotic song that predated the Star Spangled Banner, written by the son of Thomas Paine, that used the same tune.

YE sons of Columbia, who bravely have fought,
For those rights, which unstained from your Sires had descended,
May you long taste the blessings your valour has brought,
And your sons reap the soil which their fathers defended.
'Mid the regin of mild Peace,
May your nation increase,
With the glory of Rome, and the wisdom of Greece;
And ne'er shall the sons of Colmbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.

In a clime, whose rich vales feed the marts of the world,
Whose shores are unshaken by Europe's commotion,
The trident of Commerce should never be hurled,
To incense the legitimate powers of the ocean.
But should pirates invade,
Though in thunder arrayed,
Let your cannon declare the free charter of trade.
For ne'er shall the sons, &c.

The fame of our arms, of our laws the mild sway,
Had justly ennobled our nation in story,
'Till the dark clouds of faction obscured our young day,
And enveloped the sun of American glory.
But let traitors be told,
Who their country have sold,
And bartered their God for his image in gold,
That ne'er will the sons, &c.

While France her huge limbs bathes recumbent in blood,
And Society's base threats with wide dissolution;
May Peace like the dove, who returned from the flood,
Find an ark of abode in our mild constitution
But though Peace is our aim,
Yet the boon we disclaim,
If bought by our Sov'reignty, Justice or Fame.
For ne'er shall the sons, &c.

'Tis the fire of the flint, each American warms;
Let Rome's haughty victors beware of collision,
Let them bring all the vassals of Europe in arms,
We're a world by ourselves, and disdain a division.
While with patriot pride,
To our laws we're allied,
No foe can subdue us, no faction divide.
For ne'er shall the sons, &c.

Our mountains are crowned with imperial oak;
Whose roots, like our liberties, ages have nourished;
But lone e'er our nation submits to the yoke,
Not a tree shall be left on the field where it flourished.
Should invasion impend,
Every grove would descend,
From the hill-tops, they shaded, our shores to defend.
For ne'er shall the sons, &c.

Let our patriots destroy Anarch's pestilent worm;
Lest our Liberty's growth should be checked by corrosion;
Then let clouds thicken round us; we heed not the storm;
Our realm fears no shock, but the earth's own explosion.
Foes assail us in vain,
Though their fleets bridge the main,
For our altars and laws with our lives we'll maintain.
For ne'er shall the sons, &c.

Should the Tempest of War overshadow our land,
Its bolts could ne'er rend Freedom's temple asunder;
For, unmoved, at its portal, would Washington stand,
And repulse, with his Breast, the assaults of the thunder!
His sword, from the sleep
Of its scabbard would leap,
And conduct, with its point, ev'ry flash to the deep!
For ne'er shall the sons, &c.

Let Fame to the world sound America's voice;
No intrigues can her sons from their government sever;
Her pride is her Adams; Her laws are his choice,
And shall flourish, till Liberty slumbers for ever.
Then unite heart and hand,
Like Leonidas' band,
And swear to the God of the ocean and land;
That ne'er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.

I'd like "We Will Rock You".
It's short, nobody can "Shatner" it, when singing it.
and we can all join in singing, clapping, and stomping feet.

Jennifer Hudson did a great job tonight. I'm not a fan of hers and was waiting to bash her, but she was great.
She wasn't over the top at all, unless you consider someone singing really well as 'over the top'.
Black Spider obviously has no idea when it comes to music, but that's ok. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. I actually suspect Black Spider didn't catch Jennifer's performance, but knows she's black and assumed she did those things and decided to post out of ignorance.
I'd rather get rid of the obligatory red neck intro song at the top of the broadcast (ala MNF). That was pure horseshit and served no real purpose.

Sure they can. People can fuck with ANY song. They could do it more with that song b/c there's more space to do it.

BlackSpider just stated that it is common for performers to change the song and " ham-it-up", and that is true.
No one here ever said Jennifer Hudson was over the top when singing the Anthem tonight, as a matter of fact paulisded pointed out she wasn't, even though he didn't like her rendition of it.

There is only one American Anthem, and it starts:

"As I was walking, that ribbon of highway, I saw above me, that endless skyway . . ."

Anyone who doesn't love it is a fascist with a small, warty penis

Talk about making assumptions...!!!
You made a shit-load of them.
First of all, I've been a musician for about 25 years, and play several instruments,
In addition to writing and recording my own music...
-I did not catch her performance, nor did I comment on it...!!!
-I didn't know she was black, and didn't assume she did those things.
(I have no idea where that one came from. WOW.)
-I also made no comment on whether the Anthem itself was a good or bad song...
Go back and read the first post again.
I believe you are the one who posted out of ignorance...!!!

I didn't comment on that either, so I think you're making assumptions.
I did post mostly out of ignorance. My bad. I realized that a few minutes later when I was back at my couch.
And by the way, the over-singing bullshit isn't limited to women as you state. Dudes do it just as much.
And someone can "ham-up" any song if they have their mind set to it. The song choice won't make a difference, so the entire premise of this thread doesn't make sense to begin with. As such an accomplished musician of 25 years, you should have known that.
