I just find Michael Phelps uninteresting in every sense of the word outside the pool. It's obvious that since he was a kid, everything he does has been focused on making him a better swimmer, and he's so focused on that he seems to have very few talents beyond that.

The problem isn't the callers, it's the timeslot.

Usually callers from certain areas of the country add to the show, other parts of the country bring it to a halt.

I think the good callers on NEW and Free FM were better because of the market. JFK took time but became great.

When they were on NEW in the early afternoons for a while, the callers were still killer.

And we'll see as people get laid off if the callers get better. There is a silver lining to this economic meltdown.

Not about the time, its about the hayseeds.

Who can't call in that would that would bring something to the show like back in the old days?

To be honest, even though my conversational calls to the show sucked, I KILLED when I had comedy pyramid stuff ready to go. And that's not a stroke on me - one of my happiest moments of fandom of this goddamn show is when one of my lines made Fez crack up.

I can't do pyramids when I'm in my office and I'm on hold for 5-7 minutes.

Getting a good comedy pyramid together is a combination of a few things.

1) A screener who asks what the line is.

2) If the line is funny, keep them on, and warn them, DON'T SAY HI RON OR ANYTHING, just say your line and get out. WIP does this all the time.

3) People who can contribute.

It's timeslot thing. Yeah, the hayseeds fucked things up, but it was JFK.

A ron and fez show from 7-11 in the east means that California, etc. would get it from 4-9. You can't fucking tell me that wouldn't lead to awesome pyramids?

Sorry. I'm not saying Ron's wrong, but he's not 100 percent right.

You bring up screener. I think Billy was HUGE in that regard. He would know exactly what the topic was and where the comedy was going.

I think the whole structure of the show changed, about the time that Fez had his heart problems which was very early in their XM career. He became a lot more passive and the callers weren't there to keep things moving. So now its way more conversational and less produced (just a fact, by no means a knock). Being on satellite and not having to hit breaks is a huge factor in that also.

I think the callers learned the show to be a different way, combined with their own hayseed stupidity, make for terrible callers. I really think that Fez has been much more active lately, I guess coming to terms with his personal life. Maybe its time the callers, having hopefully learned what the show is about, are given a second change at things like comedy pyramids.

To that point, JFK callers stunk then learned the shows timing and flow and became great. XM callers, who are spread across the country and have no sense of humor or timing, stunk at first, then as they were learning the show, it changed after Fez has his heart attack. They had to take on a bigger role before they learned what the show was about instead of being eased into it. If that makes any sense.

I agree that Billy helped out a lot. Billy, although he tried too hard on his own comedy, knew what Funny was and wasn't.

Earl seemed to screen calls a lot and that led to problems. I know Lilly screened a lot too. Dave can't screen because he's on mic, which leaves either Hicks or foreseeably, Mooch.

I don't know how Billy was such a hack, whose only real comedy was his personal failures, but just knew what the comedy was and how to get others to add to it.

And I also don't know the behind the scenes responsibilities but I think Mooch knows comedy and could help on the phones. Prick would probably spell everything in Gaelic on the screen so that could be a problem.

Nobody is saying it was. I'm not talking about their specific situation at WJFK and NoVA, because WJFK IS a podunk operation and Northern VA sucks to live in for anyone used to city-living. I'm just saying that the callers ultimately weren't part of the problems after a while.

I did hear the call in but not the aftermath...
I have to say that recently there is a lot of dead air on when callers get on line, they don't seem to hear or realize when they are on and just go silent.
I wonder if it is a general cell phone issue or an xm technical issue.

Mooch screening calls could be a problem because of his accent. I don't know... it's just hard enough to understand him sometimes on-air and in person, I could see a problem arising... but maybe that's just me, I have a hard time with accents occassionally.

I think the initial pause is from the delay when they pick up the phone. In the old days Ron would go"Tim you're on the air" and then Fez would say "How's it going Tim?" or words to that effect.Listen to the best of's and you will hear it.They don't do that anymore.

The real problem is the second and third delays that happen when every douche bag caller says"This is Tim" paaaauuuuse"Hows it going Ron"paaaauuuusssse"Love the show guysw"paaaauuuussse.

My fear about the show is that it's kind of caught in a vicious cycle. Because the callers stink, Ronnie has to lean on people like HTG and MLC to bring in material. But I wonder if HTG and MLC discourage some callers, because they give the show an "inside" feeling that makes listeners more inclined to just sort of sit back and listen, rather than attempt to participate.

I mean, I don't want this to be taken as a simple "OMG HTG SUX!" point. She's fine, and can be quite amusing. But sometimes the show can just feel like it's a conversation between the people in that room at that time, and people might feel like they just want to listen in. So the people who do call in are the sort of talk show attention whores who just want to be on the air so they can repeat the same tired talking point they heard on Hannity.

I'm not going to dare suggest to Ronnie what should or shouldn't be done, and it's obvious that this is his judgment about how the show works best at this point in its life. But I do wonder if this is the most inviting show for the more, shall we say, normal listener.

I did hear the call in but not the aftermath...
I have to say that recently there is a lot of dead air on when callers get on line, they don't seem to hear or realize when they are on and just go silent.
I wonder if it is a general cell phone issue or an xm technical issue.

When I got through today I heard Ron say hi you're on the air I answered with a greeting then he said it again I answered again and then he said he was letting me go because I was driving him nuts. I heard it all but he didn't seem to get my call so I assume it was my cell maybe its an XM tech problem who knows. Ill listen to the replay to hear how it sounds.

I think the problem was that after your first greeting, you paused as if to wait for his response. He just wanted you to keep talking. Which is why he said you're on the air again.

really? I never had a problem understanding his accent. Maybe it would put some culture into the callers, though I think Mooch is much better suited for other projects on the show.

It's become clear that a good screener is essential to the show but Mooch would not be that person.

Apparently I did get through. I said Hello and asked Ron how he was doing and got no response, I assumed he didn't hear me so I said Hello again. That was enough for Ron, he shitcanned me for driving him fucking crazy. So it wasn't a phone thing it. I felt awful.

But look at me now Dr. Joe K., Best Caller '08 and everything. What I'm trying to say is, Stick with it Dr. Joe K., it's a whole different animal to talk to Ron on the air then in real life. Your smart, you'll be a champion in no time. I loved the call BTW. It made for great radio when Ronnie flipped out. Sometimes people tell a joke to get a laugh and sometimes people just laugh at you. There's need for both kinds of humor.

If he wants to blame a lot of complaining shit on us, FINE, we do complain. But then to bitch about the quality of callers when it's a timeslot issue as well, that's another thing all together.
bullshit ron nron were on from 6 to 10
To be honest, even though my conversational calls to the show sucked, I KILLED when I had comedy pyramid stuff ready to go.

The silence means they are listening. Thats the part where your words go. I've heard nothing and felt like things weren't going well. If its not Ron will jump in and make the most of what you've said. If it went well the room will react with laughter or interact with you. Hottub was right about the swoosh. That's usally you signal to start speaking. Sometimes they'll pick up your call and not talk to you right away so you don't want to start talking in that instance. They might be finishing up a topic before your call let them finish then wait for your turn. If someone starts to talk don't plow through. The worst is when people just talk over the hosts. I've done it by mistake and it makes me cringe. If your on hold and you hear the topic change drastically or someone says what you were gonna say. Hang up.

Its really simple if you think about it.

call-in 101 from my favorite caller,it also helps if your callin in with somethin funny, lleeder usually does, just because they're the buddays doesnt mean the listeners want to hear you want to carry on a conversation and ron will get out the call.also not a good idea if you're calling in just to correct something that was said.i wasnt going to call in with merchandise sales figures to show that the cowboys are still the #1 team because it didn't feel like good radio to me.like lleeder said its simple,if it does feel like good radio, dont call
