Dr. Steve, where do I buy that stuff that hardens the wax in my ears and allows me to pull it out in a hardened tube form? I saw it on Oprah more than a decade ago when I was young and I continually recall it.

I need to rid myself of this Oprah earwax memory.

Chocolatetown:

Usually, our goal is to soften earwax to remove it. Honestly, I couldn't find anything on this idea.

I really like the Murine Ear Kit (http://www.drugstore.com/qxp12439_333181_sespider/murine/ear_wax_removal_system.htm) for earwax removal. It's basically the same crap that doctors charge $100 to do in the office, but you can do it at home.

If you find any info on the earwax tube thing, let me know. I bet you're thinking of ear candles, though, and they've been proven not to work.

your pal,

steve

Not to jump in on Steve here but considering my history with my disaster area ears I've got some stuff to add...

I'm 99% sure you're thinking of an ear candle, and yes, it's a waste of time and money. Since I started going deaf in the left ear (nerve damage, not wax buildup) I've found that it's been very important to keep my ears clear at all times. Best technique i've found is to tilt my head sideways under the shower to help soften the wax and then use a 10 dollar bulb wash kit. Last time I was in to be checked the doc even remarked at how clean my ears were. I was oddly proud.
