CitiGroup may bail on naming rights for Shea Stadium II (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123363029719042381.html)

Given the current state of the economy and consequent lack of potential bidders, I say we pony up $5 each and make a bid to get the naming rights for a year. This would also save the drama as to where to have the annual(?) softball game.

Who's in?

What's the big deal if bailout money goes to this?

Bailout money can't go to marketing? If the bailout money was intended for the survival of banks, wouldn't marketing be a piece of that?

they should call it "choke artist stadium" instead. I'll be the first to put up my $5 for that one.

The counter-argument would be that there are better ways to spend money for marketing than paying to get a stadium named after your company. Stadium names are more about egos, and other things than actually being a successful marketing tool.

I think naming a stadium after your company is actually a brilliant marketing technique. There are banks that do not exist within a 1,000 mile radius of where I live, but I know of them because of stadium names. That's pretty good exposure.

According to a report on CNBC, the Mets say Citigroup has contacted them and will continue to honor their current marketing and naming rights agreement, contrary to the Wall Street Journal report

that's great that you know about them, but would you put your money there?
it takes more than just exposure to create a good marketing plan. people actually have to use the product in the end. retail banking is a pretty local thing for the most part; if there's not a bank branch near you, it's unlikely you'll have an account. while it is possible to do through the internet, it's probably not worth the money to market that way unless you have a local physical presence.

Exposure is a gigantic, enormous part of marketing. That's why superbowl commercials are so expensive.

And people are more likely to go with something they are familiar with, as opposed to the unknown. That's why incumbants are more likely to win in lower-level elections.

but it's not the end game; it's just the first step. before someone buys your product, they need to be aware of it.
it does no good if massive numbers of people are aware of your product and have no desire or no way to buy it. that is a waste.

Agreed that it is not the final piece of the puzzle, however my original point was spending money on renaming a stadium makes business sense because it is an effective marketing tool.

The big deal is that as a taxpayer, I don't want my money going to support a garbage team like the Mets.

And I would wager a survey of American taxpayers would render the same consensus opinion.

It's going to support Citi. What they do with the money is on them, not the Mets. You want to start following tax payer money its gonna get pretty ugly.

If following tax payer money stops the Mets from getting an extra 20 mil a year for the next 20 years, then let's start following tax payer money!

Besides, I hate CitiGroup anyway. If they were buying the naming rights to a children's orphanage, I'd be against it.

I hear you but you have no say where (most) taxpayer money goes anyway. As a fan, I could give 2 shits what they call the stadium.

because being a taxpayer i don't want my money to pay for naming rights on a baseball stadium...banks are begging for a handout..oh sorry...a bailout yet they continue to waste taxpayers money on executive bonuses and completely wasteful spending
