Were you the oldest, the baby or somewhere in between? What was it like growing up in that position?
I'm the oldest child with a younger brother. We look and act nothing alike. I caught all the shit from my parents, was forced to get a job when I became a teenager, and he got to do whatever he wanted.
Oh, and my friends were "losers" because they had long hair and played in bands while my brother's friends were all jocks so therefore they were "good kids".

i'm the youngest, but my brothers were 14 & 16 when i was born. so in a weird way i kind of grew up as an only child, but i happen to have older brothers. i feel like i grew up by myself & didn't really have siblings. it's kind of odd.

I'm an only. Some people would assume I was spoiled, but I don't think I had anything above and beyond any of my friends. If anything, I had more rules to follow than my friends that had siblings (stricter curfew and such). And if I did something stupid I had to own up to it, since I couldn't pin my crime on another sibling.

Only child.
No sharing. Spoiling occurs. Some loneliness. But all around I was a pretty happy kid.

Oldest of four. All boys.
And like A.J. said, I caught all the shit too. It eventually got easier for each brother until the youngest had free reign. And they wonder why I moved away to college.
Youngest of two.
My sister and I are as different as two people can be.

I'm the typical oldest child - overachiever who was a substitute parent at times.

I am the youngest of 2. You would think my sister kind of paved the way for me but it was quite the opposite, we are 3 years apart and somehow she always flew under the radar... while I was in trouble. CONSTANTLY. She would also let my stepfather punish me for something she did, and get away with it.
Funny enough, she soon learned I was hanging out with her friends and they became mine. She did not like that much and tried to embarrass me in front of them a few times... (did not work :) )

I am the oldest of 4, two brothers and one sister. We run like this:
Me ... 31 in March
Ger ... just turned 27 this past October
Sheepy .... 25 in 2 weeks
Catherine ... 23 last month
(This does not count the 3 older step-siblings I have, but since we don't spend much time together, they don't always factor into my calculations.)
This was damn tough because I ended up taking a lot of shit. Not rules, exactly, but more like a lot of pressure. My parents didn't know any better because they were pretty much kids themselves when I was born (my mother was 23 and my father was 25) so a lot of the things they did with me, like taking away my math homework when I asked for help with it back in the 1st grade ... and then attaching a note to it explaining why I couldn't complete the problem, seeing as how my parents decided you needed calculus to solve it.
I also felt like it was my responsibility to be my siblings' role model in my behavior, so I didn't stay out late, didn't drink, didn't smoke and didn't do drugs when I was in high school. My father must think that I practically raised myself!
There were times when my brothers and sister drove me crazy and there are times when they still do, but I am thankful for having had them in my life. I remember all kinds of wacky/funny/angry/happy things about them from when they were babies and toddlers, and really feel that they were in my life to teach me about being responsible and selfless long before I could be thankful for that.

I'm the middle child in between two sisters. I probably got away with more outside of the house but at home I was definately in the bitch position. My older sister tortured me brutally until I outgrew her and my younger sister got away with everything at home and I was berated if I even so much as raised my voice at her. My parents wondered why I spent so much time away from home getting into trouble. Good times.

They had a monkey???!!!!!! Mike's sister told the other 2 boys that they were getting a puppy, and they were quite disappointed when their parents brought Mike home instead. His brother that is closest to him in age has remained bitter towards Mike about it ever since.

I was an "apartment" child. The only reason I was conceived according to my parents was because you needed to have a certain family ratio to qualify for an apartment, they lived with my grandparents and wanted out, voila, I was conceived.

One thing I forgot to add. I moved half a country a way from my family, while all of them remained in Minnesota about a hour from my parents.
I'm not sure that I did it because I got more shit from my parents, and wanted to be farther away or that the opportunties for me away from home were so much better, but that's how it worked.

It could be a combination of both wanting to get away and having better opportunities "away."
I didn't go far from my family, but since I rarely see them anyway, it doesn't make a difference.

Same for me. All of my immediate family is still in CT with the exception of my brother who lives in Hoboken -- really, just a short train ride away. He's the good son because he visits more frequently than me. Instead, I get crap for not making a 6 hour drive more often.

I'm lucky my parents don't care that I don't visit.
My maternal grandparents, on the other hand, give me static about everything from the fact that I didn't do Pre-Cana (Catholic pre-marriage counseling) to not having a baby already to making plans to go back to work after having any kids (we simply cannot afford not to) ... I smile and nod but do whatever I want anyway.
If Grandma can't accept that, she's old and my screaming at her won't make her change her mind.

My sister calls me her second mom. I have a different dad than them but I never call them "half" siblings. It was a little weird being so much older than them but when they got older it was cool because I could take them places. I took them to wrestling shows and movies and all sorts of fun stuff. But I'm the typical oldest sibling, responsible, people pleasing, worrier and wanting to take care of everyone.
I'm still very close to them. I could not be more different from my sister. She has pink hair, tats and piercings and lives life more on the wild side. Me and my brother are a lot alike.

so was the 5 year old just an accident then? seems like after 13 long years it almost must be... having adopted 5 more they are obviously loving and caring + capable parents... I could not imagine having more than maybe 2 or 3 at the most... and that is already hard to imagine for me.

I'm a twin. It was nice growing up cos I always had a playmate, but at the same time there were some drawbacks, like we had to share birthdays (and often even presents...or half as many cos there were two of us). Also, people have confused us all our lives - I think just knowing we're twins confuses them - like they expect to not be able to tell us apart so they can't. Then there's those who don't even bother and would just refer to us as "Twin 1" and "Twin A"...we're separate people with names, dammit!
As we grew older our personalities and appearances changed, and now we actually have to convince people we're twins. But we get along great, she's always fun to hang with, I always try to get her to come out to O&A/R&F stuff.
To answer your other questions: No, when one gets hurt the other can't feel it. And no, we can't read each other's minds.

I liked being the oldest ... as someone else posted, I actually didn't pave the way for them, they took way more crap from my parents than I did. I think it was more about our personalities. My sister couldn't lie to save her life and thus got caught doing everything wrong. My brother is just sadistic and would tell teachers to blow him just to see how much trouble he'd get in. I looked like the golden child by not pushing the envelope too far, and by being able to lie about inconsequential stuff. My siblings and I don't get along all that great because we're so different, but we don't openly hate each other either.

I think the oldest is like an experiment. Everything that comes about is new territory for parents. And with each child after it becomes more of a routine that you've learned to do in less time. That's why the oldest always seems to have more rules to live by.

Part of the problem with my sibs was (1) when we were in grammar school, they had all of my old teachers because (2) we went to Catholic grammar school, so all the teachers had taught me ... this was pretty intimidating because I did very well in school.
After they reached high school, depending on who had retired by the time my sibs took whatever classes they would take, they would get some of it, but not as much as, say, my brother Gerald did in grammar school.
Both Ger and Sheepy tell me stories about three of my old English teachers, who would share stories with them and ask about me. One was Ger's writing lab teacher, and my Sophomore English teacher; Sheepy's Junior English teacher was the teacher I took an elective in Shakespeare with and his Senior English teacher was the faculty oversight for the drama club. Sheepy also ended up with my old History teacher. That guy was a RIOT!
Catherine never ended up with any of my teachers. This is probably a good thing.
