OK, I have been hanging out here for a while now and I seem to feel sometimes that there's things that people say are great that I just am not into or don't "get". Here's a short list:

Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Radiohead (post The Bends)
Zappa
Cohen Brothers (loved NCFOM though)
The Departed

I am sure I am missing some, but that's what I have for now. Who else has some dislikes or "don't gets"? I know it is all personal opinion, but sometimes you just feel odd about one.

PS: I have never seen a Godfather movie. So sue me. :smoke:

Do people on this board love The Departed? I think it's one of Scorsese's worst films. It got the "here's an Oscar before you die" Oscar.

I meet people that don't like the Cohen Brothers all the time. How can anyone not like The Big Lebowski? It's beyond me. To the same extent, how can anyone like the movie Transformers? We all just have different tastes.

If you go into those films expecting Citizen Kane, you're gonna be disappointed.

But, if you go into those films with no expectations, you might get more out of it.

Personally, I think they're both hilarious, but, I usually get the impression that I'm also one of maybe 5 people I know "in real life" who thinks Fargo was a laugh riot and who saw Lebowski several times ... and wasn't stoned. I actually took up bowling because of Lebowski.

gotcha, no worries.
one other thing I don't get; why musicians cover other musician's songs but without their own interpretation; they just sing it exactly the same as the original musicians. I just heard Paul Westerberg covering the Beatles' "Nowhere Man", and other than it being his voice and just one acoustic guitar instead of a whole band, he did it exactly as the Beatles did. now *that* is pointless.

The departed sucked. It had potential with its ensemble cast, but it turned into a comic book, with Nicholson's overacting.
Hicks is very funny, but if you disagree with his politics, I guess you may not appreciate it.
Carlin is good. I don't think he is ever hysterically funny. But he was thought provoking and funny for decades.
Radiohead is ok, but not one my list of favorites.
Zappa, eh, never got it.
Cohen Brothers are great. However, I think NCFOM may have been their worst movie. I saw it late after all the hype, so it was a let down.

I must admit "There Will Be Blood" and NCFOM were big disappoints for me. Daniel Day was great, but the movie was just OK.

That's the same thing as saying 'why would anyone get an AIM screenname' in 1998. Facebook is the preferred method of non-urgent communication between people my age (early-20's). I think it all comes down to how you use it. Some people clearly use it as exhibitionism, others use it merely as an online phonebook.

...which would completely blow. But that's not the point. Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight are the point.

You can't take a movie out of context that way. The Godfather would suck if you cast Jean Claude Van Damme for Al Pacino, too.

i'm not saying to cast him, i'm saying it was an unfunny sandler-esque movie, but it's old so people have a sense of nostalgia for it.

I don't "get" people who have a cell and can't/won't text.

I was trying to teach my 60 year old cousin how a text message works, and the conveniences thereof. He's an intelligent guy, but teaching him how to view the messages his kids had sent him, and punch out a response was like trying to teach a 4th grader calculus.

I'm 31, and I can't see myself ever being that way with an emerging technology.

Daniel Johnston.

The movie was alright, but I don't get all the hype around his music and artwork. I get that its interesting that he's manic depressive and makes music, but I could never see myself listening to one of his albums recreationally. I see it as one of those things where a few people listen to it, call it genius, and then everyone else follows along so that they don't appear to be uncultured.

Do people on this board love The Departed? I think it's one of Scorsese's worst films. It got the "here's an Oscar before you die" Oscar.

although "The Departed" wasnt a great movie, i still say if you look at its competition in the 2006 oscars, the fact that it won isn't that shocking..it just wasn't a good year. Was it Scorsese's best? of course not, but in the oscars you aren't in competition with your other films you are in competition with the other films nominated and none of those were great films either

Odd you would want to bowl after watching Lebowski. That movie made me feel bad for bowling.

Before that movie, I was a casual bowler. Some people golf, but my family bowled. I stunk and still stink, but I enjoy it. I really haven't been on a regular basis since high school.

The guy I was dating at the time I saw Lebowski decided it would be fun to go bowling because he was enamored of The Dude. He also started drinking White Russians.

I found it to be endearing and cute at the time. And, quite frankly, I still do even though we are no longer together.

It was fun and it's one of my happier relationship memories. (Incidentally, I would consider that relationship to be one of my better "rebound" situations, despite the way it ended. But, rebounds don't usually end well.)

Besides, it's a laugh riot to go bowling with a bunch of rowdy friends, get a pitcher of beer and have a good couple of games, which, depending on the alley, is typically cheaper than going to the movies.
