Ok guys... I've had a cell phone since just 2004. When I was an up and coming young buck with a fresh sheen to his coat, we used this amazing thing called a landline phone to talk to people, including members of the opposite sex. If you really had to talk to somebody behind a screen, THE INTERNET CHARGED YOU BY THE HOUR.

As such the whole mystique of cell phone etiquette that all the kids seem to know so well is a complete and utter mystery to me. Here's a lesson I recently learned for instance: TTYS means talk to you soon. I also learned that if a girl text messages you, you're not supposed to respond and then send your own text a week later or you're giving the wrong signals.

yeah that too i guess. it depends if you actually like the guy or not. either way, if someone doesn't answer your texts right away.. unless it's an emergency or something that needs to be answered asap what's the big deal? if they don't answer you in whatever time frame you see fit, just stop texting them.

I have had a cell for just over 10 years but only started texting last September. Fuck all the little acronyms, I still for the most part type in complete words, sentences, and punctuation.

I believe in trying to type out full words when possible, but still, this whole idea of etiquette for texting is bullshit. You're writing a text, not a formal letter. The whole concept of a text is to be informal and to try to communicate the information in a fast yet understandable way, and it is more than understood that words can be altered into smaller parts and still be comprehendable, EG, substituting r for are, u for you, or omitting letters from words like mtg for meeting... Yes, you can add the necessary letters, but in current SMS text format, you only get 160 characters, so you need to omit punctuatiion sometimes, and sometimes, leaving a letter or two out of a word can save time and effort, because in this fast paced life, every second counts, and do you really want to spend your time putting together some elegant text that the other end doesn't give a shit about anyway?

I'm sorry; I have a full-QWERTY keyboard on my phone, so I can always type complete words and sentences. I've rarely noticed a character limit unless I'm sending messages to people out-of-network or to folks with older phones.

I'm not writing War and Peace while I text, though, you can be sure of that.

I know this isn't the best example, but I got the number of a cute girl I sat next to in class. She'd send me long texts once every blue moon, nothing romantic, just a text. I send her a text because I'm bored one afternoon saying "hey what's up blah blah" and her response is "you trying to kick it to me? I have boyfriend you know. Ur so weird ha ha". I'm such a text retard, I don't know if that's a joke, a half-hearted flirt, or a serious statement. I just don't get the context of a text I guess. So I respond assuming it was a joke. No response, and silence for weeks. Another chick I ask this about tells me "Oh that's a hint and u shouldn't have responded." Well la-dee-da.

Also, just because a girl texts you first doesn't mean she likes you or wants to date you. Perhaps she's just being friendly. I was thinking about that today. Why don't people say "TM"? They say "IM" for instant message, and "PM" for private message. If they used "TM", wouldn't it solve the "proper English" argument?

Coining "TM" as a means of distingushing an SMS "text" message from any other type of communication would be like using "EM" to denote "e-mail" ... we don't say "EM" we say "e-mail" (or, more recently, "email") as both a noun and a verb, making the term "e-mail" a gerund (a word that functions as both a noun and a verb) ... why can't "text" now become a gerund?

Texting is awesome for talking about people you are in the room with or when you're not supposed be on the phone. That's about it for me.

For example, I can text someone about this dork's awful hair in the eye doctor's waiting room. We giggle and high five. She's none the wiser.

Texting pictures is different and way better for sight gags and sexy time. Lots more uses, worth a thousand words and all that.
