It is a super hero movie, just as Watchmen is a superhero book. But that is just one of its aspects. It may be a great literary work of art, but let's be honest, it's superhero book.

In the same way that the Sopranos could be called a mob show. but that's just one of the things about it.

It's probably the greatest comic book story of all time. As PD said, Time Magazine listed it as one of the top 100 literary works of all time.

And it's not a standard comic book. Some portions are all text. Some portions are from a horror comic book being read by a kid in the comic book. The first time I read it, I didn't read the text. It's a dense book, but not hard to understand. There are a number of levels to it, and the text adds to it.

The author is Alan Moore, who is arguably the most brilliant, craziest author who wrote comics. He wrote V for Vendetta. He wrote two of the best Superman stories of all time.

I'm not a comic book/graphic novel guy, but I was looking for something to get my son reading more.

It was highly recommended by friends, and the time magazine top 100 novels thing (http://www.time.com/time/2005/100books/the_complete_list.html)
thing put it over the top.

there are a number of 70's/political references; it is very well written.

Watchmen is a graphic novel—a book-length comic book with ambitions above its station—starring a ragbag of bizarre, damaged, retired superheroes: the paunchy, melancholic Nite Owl; the raving doomsayer Rorschach; the blue, glowing, near-omnipotent, no-longer-human Doctor Manhattan. Though their heyday is past, these former crime-fighters are drawn back into action by the murder of a former teammate, The Comedian, which turns out to be the leading edge of a much wider, more disturbing conspiracy. Told with ruthless psychological realism, in fugal, overlapping plotlines and gorgeous, cinematic panels rich with repeating motifs, Watchmen is a heart-pounding, heartbreaking read and a watershed in the evolution of a young medium.—L.G.

skyscraper
02-06-2009, 09:07 AM
that argument is only valid when there is a draft, which there isn't now.
however, I do think we should make 18 the age to do everything: driving, drinking voting, military enlistment (no draft at all), be tried as an adult. why have different ages for different "adult" things; you are either an adult or not. make it 18, and put everything under that.

edit: damn you, epo! I took the time to explain that viewpoint, and lost the novelty of it to you and your pithiness.
