Dr. Steve

The other morning i was waking up out of a dead sleep. I automatically stiffen up all my muscles and stretch out while still half asleep and lying down. I stretched so hard that something in my calf muscle pulled tight and never let up. I jumped up and out of bed but feel over because of the pain, I rubbed my leg for close to 3 minutes and it finally went away enough to get up and lay back down. It happens sometimes during sex to my upper thigh, while my girlfriend is on top and I'm reaching orgasm. Is there anything I could do to prevent this, is this something I should get checked out?

Sounds like you're having leg cramps...these are spasms of the muscles in the leg and they most often happen at night or when you're just waking up, but can happen anytime.

Causes of leg cramps include dehydration (which is my guess why they happen in the middle of the night...hard to drink while you're sleeping), low potassium, exertion (hence the sex-related episodes), alcohol use, some medications, and a few other things.
When it happens, stretching the muscle in the opposite direction of the cramp will abort the episode.

If it bothers you enough to take something every day, there are some medications that will help, and your health care provider can talk to you about them. If they're really bad, there are a few tests they can do to make sure they're just garden-variety leg cramps.

Drinking plenty of fluids during the day should help to minimize these episodes, and make sure there's plenty of potassium in your diet (bananas, anyone?). People used to use tonic water and quinine pills for leg cramps, but the FDA warned against that in 2006...well, they warned against the pills, anyway. Tonic water is still on the market.

hope this helps!

your pal,

steve

I'm good sometimes, and obviously not doped up yet.

Sounds simple enough, drink water and eat bananas. I was pretty worried it was something serious becasue it hurt so bad. Thank You.

well, don't take my word for it, seriously. I'm just your pal who happens to have a medical degree. If it keeps up, let your primary care provider know about it, ok?

I had leg cramps for a while, Dr. prescribed Quinine for me. Unless I took it every day, it really didn't help, because I couldn't predict when they would come, obviously. They went away for a while anyway. I had blood tests taken, and was told everything was normal.

Recently they started again.

I stood up from the computer desk, bam, left thigh goes. I tense up right leg to support myself, so I can stretch, bam, right thigh goes. So I lay on my fucking back trying to stretch both legs at the same time for so long my legs get tired from keeping them in the fucking air. My arms start trembling, then since I'm grabbing one toe to stretch out the thigh, the front leg muscle starts cramping. Both sides of my fucking leg at the same time, how the hell do you stretch that? I also noticed the last time I had an episode, that when I was lifting my arm to drink something, my arm started to tremble uncontrollably. I stand up to go to the other room to show my wife, and then the cramp started in my leg.

I notice that I tense up so bad, that I stop breathing involuntarily, I figure that adds to the other muscles starting to cramp. I hyperventilated on purpose, and that actually seemed to work.

What the fuck this can't be normal, that was horrible, maybe worst pain of my life just 10 minutes ago, now I'm perfectly fine.

Sometimes the next day my legs are covered in bruises, and sore for a few days.... It's awful, sometimes I feel like I have to call 911.
