Secular or sacred?

My favorite sacred, foreign-language song is Spasienye Soldelal ... a capella, for men's voices, in Slavonic.

My favorite secular, foreign-language songs include songs I performed in high school & college as part of my extra-curricular choruses, like Herbstlied, Le Herrison and Chien Perdu for women's voices ... or songs I listened to in college like the one about the brewmaster that our Glee Club would perform (I think they learned it in Latvia or something one tour.)

It's a question-and-response type of song, usually using a big sheet of paper with pictures to signal the verse intended. The song leader will sing "Ist das nicht'n ... ?" and point to the picture, say of a fat pig (fette sau) and the crowd responds with "Ja, das ist'n ..." and they keep adding pictures to recite ... kind of like There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

I don't know if it's a regional thing. If it is, perhaps it's more closely associated with Oktoberfest?

My dad said that his family used to do one (we have roots in Durmstadt, but apparently none of our family records survived WWII so I don't know if I have living relations, no matter how distant) and he hasn't been to a Schnitzelbank sing-along since he went to the Oktoberfest up at Germania Park in Morris County, maybe 15 years ago.

(He loved every minute of it. Especially the oom-pah band.)

teresa stratas' version of "youkali tango" ... that's one of those songs when i heard it (on idiot's delight) that floored me right away

the best of paolo conte has alot of gems -- particularly "boogie" or "sotto le stelle del jazz"

i saw elvis costello (with david hidalgo) just kill with "may y mas"

"oasis" by puya is, by far, my favorite puerto rican hardcore song (i think o&a are using it as a bed lately)

"buena vista social club" is a good listen
