I thought we were going to show the terrorists they can't defeat us?:

110-Story Skyscraper Unlikely in NY
The Associated Press
Jan 3 2002 7:45PM
NEW YORK (AP) - The chairman of the group charged with rebuilding at the World Trade Center said Thursday it is unlikely that 110-story skyscrapers will replace the twin towers toppled in the Sept. 11 attack.
The site should feature smaller buildings, said John Whitehead, head of the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Corp.

``I visualize other office buildings being built in the general region of 40 or 50 or 60 stories, but nothing like the 100 story buildings that were there before,'' said Whitehead, a retired Wall Street executive.
Few corporations are willing to lease significant space in such tall buildings due to the current economic downturn, he said. Further, Whitehead speculated that many people would be hesitant to work in skyscrapers because of safety concerns.
``I think there is a developing consensus of everybody I've talked to that it is not either practical or appropriate to build another 100-story building,'' he said.
Whitehead's remarks came after members of the development commission met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the first time to discuss plans for the 16-acre site.
The commission was appointed by Gov. George Pataki and then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to oversee rebuilding. Before he left office, Giuliani called for the site to be devoted entirely to a memorial to honor victims.

However, both Bloomberg and Whitehead said Thursday that, while space should be set aside for a memorial, Giuliani's suggestion appeared unfeasible given the need for office space and the value of the property.
Bloomberg also said that rebuilding with huge skyscrapers is not economically practical.
``I think that every developer that I've met with has said that it is just impractical from an economic point of view to build very large structures any place at the moment,'' the mayor said.

i wanted new twin towers too, but who would want to work in another 100 story building? I would to be defiant, but what about others?

This may be good for manhattan, we'll have new symbols of downtown hopefully soon. Now if Silverstien can just put a fifth tower..that will make a middle finger to bin laden....

Lent, I was discussing this with someone the other day...One thing that we as Americans ALL share. Is an incredible short memory. We forget the reasons why we do things...once people become comfortable again. And they will, believe me they will...for life will go on. Yes we all hurt and suffer now, and people will work again. They have too. NY is practically the financial heart of the world...definetly of the US. The towers were a symbol of our power and glory...They were our Pantheon, our Stonhedge, our Pyramids. Too NOT rebuild them would be to let the terrorists win!! i hate when people use that phrase but this is a time where it really counts!
It would put people to work, and people will work after that...despite what everyone thinks. Life will go on...it always does.
I say we bring back the small competition with the other cities and challenge height record...lets take the height record from those punks in Chicago...120. Ha!!! We should make ours 121 just to really rub salt in wound...there is nothing worse than losin by one point...
My point is that the towers should be rebuilt. They have to be, or someother architectural masterpiece that shows that we have not lost...life must and will go on

Doggie, I would personally just prefer to see a memorial built there, but I could definatly see your point about having new towers built. To me personally it just wouldn't be the same, but hey, to each his own.

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

I would like to see something there. But I dont think they should rebuild the towers, or any building over 100 stories for that matter, because I dont think that the ground in able to support all that weight. But I could be wrong about that I dont know I'm just a junior in high school. So if I'm wrong Im sorry.

Manhattan Island is essentially one giant chunk of rock. Once the foundation has been dug into that rock, a building isn't going anywhere, even an 100+ story plus one.

To blame the tradgedy on Sept 11 on the tall building is misguided I think. Clearly, if there had been better security at the airport and in the plane, this wouldn't have happened. In any case, I seriously doubt any building can withstand that kind of impact and heat. But to build smaller buildings essentially because of what happened seems the wrong way to go to me. Sometimes we have to look beyond the present economic and emotional situation. The Empire State Building was built during the depression. It lost money for a number of years. But look what it's done for the city, how it's become a symbol. Aren't we all glad it's there?

I agree that towers should be rebuilt. With current technologies being 2-3 decades more advanced than when the WTC was originally built, I'm sure that something could be done to help make the buildings safer. It is always more expensive to retrofit something than it is to start including safety concerns from the beginning.

A memorial should definitely need to be included in the complex. As far as tributes go, these people worked in these buildings spending many hours there. I'm sure many took pride in the fact that they were on a particular floor in one of the tallest buildings in the world. I think to put smaller buildings on the site is just another "let's play it safe" attitude that we can do without. America would not be here if everyone played it safe.

I strongly feel that "something" should be built, but I don't know exactly what. (Very powerful ambivelance - lol)

New towers would seem like the ultimate in defiance - but would the average American - short attention span and all - know 50 years from now that they weren't the original buildings? A memorial would be fitting for this reason.

Perhaps new buildings and a memorial are in order. The worst thing would be to leave the area unbuilt.

I wouldn't mind the 4 50-story towers, but in the middle should be the tallest building in the world (It should look like the CN Tower/Space Needle.) Since offices in a big tower are not feasible, it should be a memorial aimed at attracting tourists. Maybe the 2,900+ names that perished should be engraved on the bricks that build this tower.

They should make a Park with a Memorial of two miniature, identical looking towers, maybe a story or two high. The towers would have the names of all who perished on them. There should also be statues of a Fireman and Policeman about half the size of each building, looking up at the miniature towers. They are true heroes who lay their life on the line. They don't get paid nearly enough!

I say we should have a
memorial, but also rebuild
bigger and better towers. Why
let theese a-holes prevent us
from having tall buildings? I
was at the Towers when they
were struck, I'd go back if
they rebuild em.
