So Chris Russo appeared on Stern this morning and dished some dirt on the monotone Francesa.

Francesa went on a 20 minute screed to close his show, basically calling Russo a liar.

It's on now.

Mike threw down the gauntlet, he said he hoped Russo ended up at ESPN radio because they would need him, plus his friends and family if they even think they can bump his rating status.
I think Mike's ego is huge, but thats my local station and I'm behind him. (Not to mention Michael Kay is unlistenable)

I wish I taped the WFAN audio, but Mike was pissed and basically said, "As long as I'm here, we're gonna be #1. That's for damn sure."

The Stern audio is probably available through torrents

Mike is a pompous tool but I can't stand Russo. Russo, just as pompous and how does a guy who can't annunciate anything strike gold in radio. I don't get it.
I'll throw my hat in Fat Mike's corner.

What happened to the heartfelt, tearful goodbye they shared a few months ago?

I haven't heard Russo solo, and I doubt I could listen for more than a few minutes. He's just a bit much for my taste. Mike is a bit stale, on the other hand.

the one thing I can get from this is that sterns show loves to spin ratings. they have been way off on O&A's ratings and the same thing with Mikes ratings.

the best part of maddog being on sterns show is how stupid and local it is to the NYC audience, and how the rest of the country could not care less about this

I heard that Russo said he got more guests during Superbowl week than Mike did. Chris got Parcells but Mike said he and Parcells had a falling out 6 months ago. I personally like when there are less guests on the show. The week before the Superbowl a daiy caller to Mikes show was busting his balls about the up coming SuperBowl week since its usually chock full of guests. He said the over under was 65 guests. Mike said he had some other things planned and didn't want to go so guest heavy.

I love radio wars of any sort and will enjoy this feud. I loved when O&A fought with Howard back in the WNEW days. It made both shows a must listen to. I know these are sports guys but they still have a long history together which will make the words that much more caustic. I guess since Megapowers Explode I've been into this sort of thing.

I respect the fact that Mike took the show away from "radio row" at the SuperBowl. O&A would never be in a "radio row" anymore either. Thats for hacks.

I listened to most of the Russo interview and as much as Stern tried to get Russo to say something bad he really didn't take the bait.

Stern a few times asked about the before/after rating and Russo answered that he honestly didn't know.

Russo did mention that they were obvioulsy competeing for the same guests the week leading up to the Super Bowl and that was the first time since the seperation that they've gone head to head in a thing like that.

Russo did say that he had Parcells on his show the Friday before the SB, and noted that Francesa didn't ( and somebody on Stern's show pointed out that Francesa and Parcells are supposed to be good friends ), but he also said that Parcells was there to promote Gatorade and didn't do his show for any other reason.

Stern then went into asking questions about on air fights that Russo and Francesa had years ago, which I guess revolved around Russo giving Parcels a hard time about leaving the Patriots suddenly and Francesa babying Parcells about it, but that discussion didn't last long.

Stern brought up that Russo had Torre in studio and that Francesa only had him on the phone but Russo pointed out that his show is in NYC, where Torre had another engagement, and that Francesa is in Queens which would've been out of the way for Torre. I thought Russo would've pointed out that Francesa actually had the interview a day prior and maybe he did but if so I missed that.

Other than that there was nothing very feud worthy in my opinion.

I think Russo handled himself fairly classy and didn't fall into any of the traps Stern set.

Francesa to me is a condescending prick.

When a caller proves him wrong or rebufs a point he makes he just talks over them and then dumps the call.

I've never heard Russo do that.

I am not from NY and had never listened to the Mad Dog until he came on XM. I actually enjoy the show much more than any ESPN radio because he doesn't take comericals constantly - he is willing to take callers and answer questions (although his callers are mostly meatheads).

I have to say my XM finally has a second use after Ron and Fez...

Anything Mike says about horse racing is read, almost verbatim, from guys out of the papers. he should at least acknowledge them when he does so. Like... "thanks Russ Harris for my opinion on this year's triple crown."

Although I find it impossible to listen to either of them, I suspect Joe is closer to the truth here. A few years ago on WFAN some horse racing association gave Imus $50K (or $90K, I forget) to bet on one of the Triple Crown races with the winnings to go to support his ranch for the sick kids. Imus turned the $ over to "The Expert" Francesa to make the bets. I remember the segment where Francesa explained (pontificated is probably more accurate) his rationale for the betting scheme and said if everything played out right the Ranch would collect about $1 million and the worst case scenario was it would have about $250K. When the Monday after the race rolled around, the results were announced: every bet had tanked and there was $0 left. (I think the sponsor "ponied up" another $50K for the charity.) I don't think I ever heard him get a prediction right when he guested on Imus' show, which would be OK I guess if he had any entertainment value at all outside of his "expertise". The only funny was when Bernie or Lou would mock him out.

Ive had no use for Mike or the Mad dog for at least 5 years now. Even with terrestrial radio there's gotta be something better to listen to than either one of them. They came along at the right time at the beginning of sports radio but neither one has had anything new to say in many years

Back to the salsa factory you snivelling cancer kids! Francesa lost the ranch!

(On the side a bit)... When discussing a pick for a race like the derby or any other trip crown races, there really should be very little to say. How could he pontificate? ALL of the horses have CLASS, almost ALL of the horses have PACE, and there are usually no concerns about their last TRIP. Maybe u like the jock, maybe the horse really showed you something in one of the qualifiers. And last workouts. I personally, don't even like to look at or think odds until after I've picked a few for a race like this.
I'd have more respect for his handicapping skills if he just said "put it all on the one that shits on the paddock walk."

I think they definitely worked together better, each one alone doesnt really make sense to me. Russo is a maniac who gets awfully worked up and says goofy shit, and Mike sometimes has so much dead air i think the radio is crapping out. I say they throw Evan Roberts in with Mike.

There is nothing better than a good radio war, lol. Still, they parted pretty amicably, and in my opinion they were good together because of the differences in their styles. Mike was the straightman to Russo's "Mad Dog"You can't force chemistry like theirs, but they both felt it was time to move on. Now they're giving each other a little boost, it's pretty smart if it's a work, but I'm not sure it is.

The cuz and Glenn are good. I actually check out Mike alot now that I go to school up here. One thing he does is make Howard Eskin seem like the worst sports radio host ever. Mike will let most of his callers speak and find rationale with things they say. Howard thinks that anyone who thinks the Eagles have done anything wrong ever is insane and should jump off a bridge. I don't get how Howard claims to be a sports expert, anyone can say that throwing an interception is a bad play. The Eagles can go 0-16 and the Phillies win another title and you would think it was the other way around with him.
