I was on a music site and they brought up GG Allin and The Murder Junkies. I like to think of myself as being some what knowlegable when it comes to music, especially punk, but I realized I had never heard anything from this 'acclaimed' figure. So I read some things about him, watched some interviews, and listened to some of his stuff.

God is he an awful person. How can anyone defend him? He wasn't talented, and his life was disgusting. If there's a hell, I would hope he'd be there.

Talented? Not really.
Commited? Absolutely.

Yes, he was commited to his cause. Which was basically the idea of everyone doing what they want when they want.

But, this is what makes him such a bad person. Because the idea, in principle, isn't awful, but when used for the things he subscribed to it is.

I never knew anything about him. From the looks of this pic, he was a real winner.

Watch the Todd Phillips movie about him.

(Just a warning. There is a lot of shit and vomit and cock in this movie).
It gives you a fair amount of insight into this psychopath.
The fact that he really is repugnant is what part of the appeal is.

They didn't clean him up for the funeral. He was covered in feces from his concert (cause that's what got him going) and he had told people that he didn't want any makeup or anything when he died. He wanted to look like he did, apparently covered in shit and wearing a leather jacket and a jock strap.

I just watched "Hated" a couple of weeks ago. As Slumbag says, he was definitely committed. I think what he was doing was an extreme brand of performance art. A pretty disgusting, violent brand of performance art.

thx for that link....I'm downloading the movie now and am reluctantly looking forward to watching it

I'm fairly desensitized to "stuff" and to quote Yimmy I could eat pudding while watching 2g1c but there's something viscerally wrong with GG Allin that sets me off.

We were bored, there was nothing going on.
Might as well stay at home and drink until we pass out again.
Then drink some more when the morning comes.
Memphis was sinking into the Mississippi.
We were doing our best just to ride it down.
Till the night G.G. Allin came to town.

"Honey, I dont believe this,"
the old man at Ferguson's Cafe kept saying to his wife.
As he read aloud The Memphis Star and their account of what went down that night
"It says He took a shit on the stage and started throwing it into the crowd.
But He was gone before the cops could come and shut him down."
Gone before the shit came down.
The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town.

The Night G.C. Allin Came to Town.
Antenna Club, Memphis, 1991.
Punk Rockers Paid $12.00 to be Shit On!

The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town
"It says He took the microphone and shoved it up his ass!"
The old man and his wife were aghast
Me and Cooley we just laughed so hard
We both fell down....

The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town.

It was performance art. Of course the music was crap but that didn't matter. I'm not a big fan but I think you need to think about him like you would Karen Finley not the Ramones.

The first time I ever heard of gg allin was a throw away line by Ronnie B in response to ESD throwing shit. He said something like "You don't see gg allin on the wall of the Hard Rock'do you Dave?"
Googled and you tubed him up and downloaded a bunch of songs
He died a typical rock star overdose of H after claiming he was going to kill himself on stage at some point pretty pathetic overall but an interesing footnote in music history.

Maybe it has something to do with when you got into punk (and I'm not calling anyone young or anything, I'm just speculating.) Someone who is older, who maybe developed their tastes preinternet would be more likely to know about GG because its a story that begs to be told. If you were around after there was a lot more access to much more palatable punk GG might not make as much sense. I know when I was 12 I loved anything punk, regardless of what it was, because it was the only punk I was going to get. My brother watched the movie Suburbia every weekend for a year, that movie is fucking terrible, but its about punks so you watch it.

So I listen to GG if he's on, and I do like it. GG may have been the best kind of art, art that is not aware that is trying to be art.

I think there is a sense in which music "hipsters" use GG Allin as an inside joke. "Oh, you know who ruled? GG Allin. Dude, you should totally listen to him." But, yeah, his music, standing alone outside the performance, is just bad.

Though I did want to try to get together a bunch of people to try to get XM's "20 on 20" station to play "Anti-Social Masturbator."

no shit? that's great.

my brother-in-law lives a suburban jersey life now but he was in the East Village in late '70's/early '80's. when he comes in to town we go to his old bars and he will bump into people like that. there is always some old guy who played with Joe Strummer when he was in the neighborhood or someone who played with Dean Wareham before Galaxy 500.

I love that feeling in the East Village. the guy serving you pizza could have been the bassist for the Dictators or shot heroin with the Dead Boys.

One of my better friends produced Allin's Carnival of Excess. He (the producer) is a pretty eccentric cat himself, but even he thought Allin was too much to handle.

Born Jesus Christ Allin at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, New Hampshire, Allin was raised in East St. Johnsbury, Vermont and Concord, Vermont.[2] He was given this messianic name because his father – Merle Allin, Sr., then 33 years old, told his wife – Arleta Gunther, then 23 years old, that Jesus Christ Himself had visited him and told him that his newborn son would be a great and all powerful man in the vein of the Messiah.[5][2]

i see is having a post about that Adolph Hitler kid in 30 or so years about the exact same thing as this GG Allin thread

But by what standards are you saying its bad. It sounds exactly like its supposed to, so in a way it's really succesful.

GG lived the life we would if we were going to die tomorrow. He reverted all his social learnings, and lived like he was raised in the wild. Raping women, eating/throwing shit, cutting himself to get cheers from audience.

A true wild beast.

I'm actually surprised a lot of the older folks here don't know who G.G. was and i'm only 23.

Especially if you listen to, ahem, punk music. Not the Clash, not Green Day but the gritty stuff.

Anyhow, he was quite a character.

Ya know, if you go to youtube and type in gg allin suicide, there's a video of him doing a poetry reading, though the poetry reading is actually just him fighting with the audience, yelling about things, assaulting a girl (granted provoked through words)...

He says something interesting though about them not paying him for 8 years. It seems interesting that he had concerns about money/getting paid.

Maybe that's just me.
