The "little monkey" incident

Cosell drew criticism during one Monday Night Football telecast in September 1983, for stating "look at that little monkey go", when he referred to a play by black wide receiver Alvin Garrett of the Washington Redskins. While some saw "little monkey" as a racial slur, televised footage shows that Cosell routinely used this phrase in an approving way to describe quicker, smaller players of all ethnicities.

Cosell left Monday Night Football shortly before the start of the 1984 NFL season. Afterwards, his duties were then reduced to only baseball, horse racing, and a sports news program called Sportsbeat. We don't, but the historically racist comparison of black people to monkeys is very well known, and the cartoonist should have known it would not be received well.

It's almost like Ron is implying that we should have the freedom to say offensive things, but we shouldn't have the freedom to rally against offensive things. I understand his position because he is a broadcaster and he has to deal with the nonsense of "false outrage" more than any of us would, but this argument has holes. It's not as black and white as Ron is making it out to be. I agree with him though, the mainstream media is incredibly lazy regarding the issue. Instead of having intelligent dialogue regarding WHY this was offensive and WHAT it means, they get the typical talking heads to take the polar opposite sides and spit fire at each other.

But if you aren't a racist and don't see things in racial tones, it is certainly possible to overlook the supposedly racist bent of the cartoon.

And I am not saying that anybody that sees the cartoon as racist is a racist - I am saying that if the guy drawing it just saw it as "a crazy monkey wrote the stimulus package" and didn't see it as a racial slur, then we shouldn't transfer racial intent.

This is a weird example, but think of the South Park episode concerning the South Park Flag. Chef was pissed because it was a Black guy being hung by white guys, but all the kids saw was a guy being hung - they didn't see his color. The kids didn't understand the uproar because they didn't see the racism that others saw.

Regardless, it is not a cartoon that should have gotten by the Editor. It is easy to see how the issue could blow up with racial overtones.

Yeah people are stupid thinking mcdonalds make their own syrup, the only difference in the restaurants are the coke techs who use their little tools to mix the ingredients. Mcdonalds always taste crisper which makes them taste better.
