but I know I can't do it alone. I always said I would wait till I got pregnant to quit but I have been deathly ill for the past three days and havent had a cigarette so I figured now is a good time. I can't do it cold turkey. Should I try the patch? I don't think just the gum would work. What else is available? Please help. I know as soon as I get better I will be going through withdrawls so I have to get something quick. I don't know how long I will last but I know this is the right thing to do.

First of all, congratualtions on your decision to quit smoking. It's one of the most profound decisions you can make about your health.
Make no mistake though, it's a very difficult thing to do. Tobacco is VERY addicting and you'll experience withdrawal symptoms.
You refer to being "deathly ill." Especially given these circumstances you MUST check with your doctor as to what method of stopping is best for you. Some people like the patch, others gum, others methadone, still others need to go cold turkey.
Check with your doctor so you can ensure that you choose the appropriate method based upon your medical history for overcoming your addiction.
I wish you the best of luck, and I must reiterate that you've made a wonderful decision.

Gina, I did it the same way
last March; I had an awful
case of the flu and decided I
was going to stop. I was a
heavy smoker for 17 years,
and always said I'd never
be able to do it cold turkey,
but surprise, surprise, I did.
It's now been 10 months,
and I've even gone out and
gotten BOMBED and not
had so much as a puff. It's
not too hard after the first
month, so just hang tough!
Out with the old, in with the new!

If Gvac can do it Gina, so can you. I have faith in you, I wish you the best of luck. I am not a smoker so I don't have much advice on how to quit, but I know that you should. Hope it goes well.
IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

Horde King's right. Some like gum. Some like the patch. Personally, nothing got me to kick the nicotine habit better than a good ol' shot of heroin. Trust me it does wonders. Too bad I'm going to have to sell my pc for my next hit.

Y'know, I've got a solution, and it may seem unorthodox. Smoke until you get sick. Take a pack and smoke it up as fast as you can. When you get to much of it into your system, your body will reject it and you'll develop a response to cigarettes where you'll just despise them. There are also hotlines to help you in ny and nj always advertising on TV.
Good luck to you
i got kicked out of my band, so now i'm stuck with the name

Thanks all for the support guys. Its greatly appreciated, but I am an asshole. I knew I shouldn't have posted about it until I had actually quit but I have already failed. I feel like such a loser. But I suppose tomorrow is another day and I shall try again.:(

Hey, Gina, don't get down on yourself. Ever hear the old joke "Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it a million times!" ? It's true. I quit countless times before it actually "took". Just keep trying, that's the main thing.

You haven't failed. Even making the attempt is important. Take it day by day and realize from the start that it will be hard. Every cigarette you pass up is a victory.

stay away from smokers as much as you can. if someone lights up, ask them to do it far away from you.

Ok, I bought the patch today and am starting it tomorrow. I talked to the pharmacist and he said it took him 3 times to quit before it actually worked..So here goes round two. hopefully this will be it. I am willing and ready.
Lent...my roomate smokes and so do most of my friends(except for Dan,yay, who will be more than thrilled). I told her and anyone that comes over that there is no more smoking in the house but I told the roomate she could in her room. That shouldn't bother me. And I think I am gonna stear clear of bars for a while and drinking in general.
Thanks again guys!

Ive been a smoker for 9 years and im only 22, I think about quiting all the time but havent truly made an attempt.I work at a pharmacy and ask people who use the patch, the gum, and zyban if any of them worked for them. The best response Ive gotten is from people who take zyban, Like the horde king says check with your doctor and see whats best for you

I don't know hord king. If my joke was offensive in some way, I apologize. Apparently, something here I don't know about.

Anyway, the reason for bringing it back up is this.

For those of you wishing to quit smoking, there is a laser technique now that has a very high success rate.

Also, I spoke to my doctor about quitting and informed me that there will soon be a new drug on the market currently awaiting FDA approval that is being used in Europe that is said to be kick ass. I will follow up on the name hopefully next week after talking to my Doctor. My wife said she believes it was recently approved. Not sure though.

It's been several years now.

too bad my Mom wasn't so lucky, massive heart attack at age 60 a week after her retirement party... plack(sp?) in the arteries due to smoking
