Anti-gay preachers banned from UK
By Lesley Richardson, Press Association

Thursday, 19 February 2009

Two American hate preachers have been banned from entering the UK where they planned to picket a play by a gay youth group, the Home Office said today.

Extremist Christian leaders Fred Phelps and daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper were to protest outside a performance of The Laramie Project, the story of an American man killed for being gay, being performed at a school arts centre in Basingstoke, Hampshire, tomorrow.

Coming to Britain, church with a mission to demonise homosexuals
But Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has barred them and a UK Border Agency spokesman said: "The Home Secretary has excluded both Fred Phelps and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper from the UK.

"Both these individuals have engaged in unacceptable behaviour by inciting hatred against a number of communities.

"The Government has made it clear it opposes extremism in all its forms.

"We will continue to stop those who want to spread extremism, hatred and violent messages in our communities from coming to our country.

"That was the driving force behind the tighter rules on exclusion for unacceptable behaviour that the Home Secretary announced on October 28 last year.

"The exclusions policy is targeted at all those who seek to stir up tension and provoke others to violence regardless of their origins and beliefs."

Phelps, 79, and his daughter Shirley, 51, belong to the US Westboro Baptist Church based in Kansas which calls for homosexuals to be killed.

Its members, mostly Phelps's relatives, regularly picket US soldiers' funerals as the sect believes their deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishment for America's tolerance of gays.

Their homophobic exploits were exposed in 2007 by TV documentary-maker Louis Theroux.

Other church members could also be stopped if they try to enter Britain, according to reports.

It follows the ban on Dutch MP Geert Wilders entering the UK last week for his extremist views on Islam.

Peter Tatchell, from gay rights group OutRage!, said: "The Phelps are odious, homophobic bigots. They give Christianity a bad name.

"Objectionable though they are, I don't agree with them being banned but since the Home Secretary banned the Dutch MP Geert Wilders at least she is being consistent by also banning these Christian preachers of hate.

"It makes it all the more odd that the Home Secretary has not banned Jamaican reggae singers who incite the murder of gay people.

"Why are they allowed in to the country but not the Phelps?

"Inciting murder is even worse than inciting hatred. Why the double standards?"

These scumbags are also going to the funerals of the pilots of the Colgan Air plane that went down in Buffalo to protest. They'll get what they deserve eventually. It'd make my year if Shirley's kids turned out to be gay.

This is such a double edged sword.

If they didn't give them the press, then no one would know they're going to England, except the people who see them outside protesting. Then again, they could just have the police move them away. But if you're preaching free speech, you shouldn't ban them anywhere.

Uggg... I just want to know how these hayseeds can afford flying to the UK!!!

She's coming here because she's stopping by Plattsburgh to protest a performance of "The Laramie Project."

the Guardian, Independent, BBC will love this. Of course, they will rush to Shirley&gang, where ever they are to interview them and hear their outrage. the British and European press loves the Phelps Family, American neo-Nazis, and everyone that Alexandra Pelosi interviewed in her movie about GOP grief. Stories about right-wing batshit crazy religious Americans sells like hotcakes in Europe.

The UK really doesn't "preach" free speech, at least the way people here do. They are much tighter on speech issues than we are. For instance, it's easier to get damages for defamation there, and their laws re: government records are stricter too, I believe.

Yeah, author John Duignan's book about Scientology, "The Complex" was dropped from Amazon UK due to fears of legal action.

I watched the Mist the other night, kind of a dumb movie but that psycho Christian lady reminds me of Shirley. I am sure they get their money from some poor inbreds on welfare that will believe anything, plus they have a shit load of kids and don't pay taxes cause they are a religion. It is all a crock of shit. I wish they could get Ron on national tv interviewing her to make he look like the crazy lady she is. Better yet she dies from that gay disease aids and Ron still gets a national show and we never hear from that family again.

No surprise there. I can't believe they're not being told next to Batboy stories myself.

I can't stand Shirley Phelps-Roper. She is exactly the opposite of what Christianity is about. She points her finger, judges people for their actions, and basically shows her ass to the world in the name of Jesus. She needs to take a look at what she is accomplishing and re-evaluate her ministry. In Christianity, humans are not here to judge.

My greatest wish is that the UK let them come over to protest and then WE ban them from re-entry to the US citing them as a terrorist org. That would be sweet.

That would be hilarious! They would just find something to bitch about over there. Europe can have them. Maybe they should move to Iraq to help convert Muslims.

In the UK, "God Hates Fags" is an anti-smoking slogan.

They've taken a stand that they pretty much won't permit anything that they deem 'hate speech' over there, so this isn't surprising.

The UK government barred from entering the country, some anti-Islamic elected official from some other European country a couple weeks ago.

If Shirley's smart, though, she'd fly over anyway and make the UK government physically turn her away. It'll get her press.

I get the feeling that they make a TON of money on lawsuits. There's a bunch of lawyers in the family, and there's probably a instance or two of someone trying to attack them, or local government attempting to restrict their freedom of speech at every one of their rallies.

They've probably been suing for damages for years, and winning most of the cases.

And you know all that money is just in a sack with a '$' on it under Fred Phelps' mattress.
