Yesterday on the Ron & Fez show, the boys talked about geeks, dorks, nerds and fans, and what the differences between these groups are.

I believe ESD's definitions were that geeks were people very obsessed with something, essentially a superfan, to the point of dressing up like their obsession or treating people who didn't share that passion as being lesser beings.

Dorks were similar but dumber.

And so on. And the boys mentioned that some R&F/O&A messageboard people fit into these categories. For instance, Ron mentioned the "pests" and I think he labeled them as O&A geeks.

So where do you fall? Or do you have your own definitions of the above. I thought I was a comic book/sci fi geek, but admittedly I don't dress up and I try to not treat people differently (whether I succeed or fail at that I leave to others).

EDIT: I am probably a Ron & Fez geek given my listening habits and my participation in the listening threads.

I think his definitions did have some merit to them, even they weren't 100% correct.

I'm kind of a Star Wars geek in that I play all the video games, read the EU books and watch the movies but I don't goto conventions or dress up. Same with Hellboy and Batman. I guess I'm more of a fan

I audible every show and listen pretty much to all of them, but I'm not obsessed with the show. I don't think I really want to meet anyone in real life, but I have emailed Fez and Ron a few times to thank them for the show. I went to D.C. to watch the Unmasked taping, which was a lot of fun and I got a picture with the buddays, which is in one of my facebook photo albums. What would you classify me as? I think Geek.

I think a lot of this ties into getting emotional validation and/or approval from the people connected to the show.

How so? These definitions were thrown out there as applying to things like Star Wars and Star trek as well. R&F is an anomaly in that they interact with, respond to and socialize with their listeners. What's the corollary in other mediums? I don't think there is one. Is this just veiled resentment with being brought up as an example in the discussion?

Holy crap, you go from zero to attack rather quickly. I'm guessing this is where Ron brought my name into it yesterday. I didn't hear it, so I don't know.

Going back on topic:

Have you ever been to a science-fiction con? Where there are Q&A panels? yes, validation ties into it, especially with some of the deeper questions.

I think also social issues, like awarkness or personality problems figure in. The levels of geeks/dorks/nerds/fans is proportionate to intelligence and how well you're adjusted.

Nerds, in any sense of the word, not just related to a show, have been highly intelligent yet very socially awkward people.

Geeks and Dorks fall into being both less intelligent and socially awkward.

Fans are probably the most well adjusted of the group.

Here are some examples...

New York Comic Con, last year. Battlestar Galactica panel - someone gushed for about 20 minutes about how one of the actresses set a positive role model for other Indian women.

Crying Wrestling Guy - it's still real to him.

I seriously think this panel happened the morning after that episode aired.

Don't forget she also suggested rigging the election.

She did more than suggested. She actually did it.

Roslin just backed out after the Gimp brought it to Adama's attention.

One plotline that has always bothered me... When Cloud 9 blew up, how did Gina get possession of the nuke? Did Baltar freely give it to her, or did she take it from him?

Because if anything about being complicit with the Cylons, that would have been a slam-dunk. I'm surprised it wasn't brought up in the trial or even mentioned again.

Also, when it came to the election, I would thought it would be more ironic that Roslin actually won the election but she quit because of the scandal.

depends on what

for stuff like Ron&Fez and the band WEEN i'm a dork. The dork, as ESD said, is someone who is really into stuff but is positive about it and just wants other people to love the stuff they love

then, with a lot of movies in general (and recently O&A) i'm a geek cuz i'm very critical and snobbish and i do think a lot of times i know better.

i don't think im nerdy in anything though. i'm not smart enough

As I've stated many times, I'm almost embarrassed at how fanatical my devotion is to this show. I can't stand missing a second of it (which my job forces me to, unfortunately) and I spend waaaaaay too much time here, even though this place has almost nothing to do with the show anymore besides interacting with other fans/geeks/dorks.

I guess the main reason we get so attached is because of how accessible Ron and Fez are to their fans. I really do feel like they're buddies of mine at this point, not radio hosts that I idolize in some creepy, stalkerish way.

oh i thought of something i'm a nerd about. Troma films! I've read all of Lloyd Kaufman's books and whenever i show one of the better ones to someone i'm annoyingly spouting troma facts. I'm an asshole where that is concerned

So i'm the trifecta...depending on the subject i can be a dork, geek or a nerd

I'm with Gvac. Gotta have my daily shot of R&F. I listen in the car to and from work. I have my earbuds in as I go to bed every night and fall asleep to the show and I'm always checking out .Net to see what's going on with the community (even if i don't post a lot).

BTW, I just have to say that I'm really digging the energy on the show lately. Not sure if it's Earl leaving, Fez feeling better or something else but whatever it is, it's great! Everyone sounds up and like they're having fun.

Loving the Character Bell, the return of the Nature Boy, Lilly and Pitzy checking in, the After-show shows, the Sunday shows and can't wait for Unmasked to start back up.

Weddings, baby showers, going away parties, welcome back parties, rock-a-hula luaus, Rock 'n Ribs, Big Ass Nights of Fights, Friday Night Lights, bar crawls! What other show does so much for their listeners? How can you not love these people?

They are -- the BEST THING GOING -- TODAY!!!!! WOOOOO!

My definitions:

Geek: irrationally obsessed with something.
Nerd: obnoxiously knowledgable (or at least in your own mind) about something.
Dork: unhipness (not necesarrily in relation to a subject...more in terms of personality)
Fan: irrationally emotionally invested in something.

More often than not, most people are hybrids.

In relation to the 202 universe:

O & A Pests = Fan Geeks
Wackbag = Fan Dorks
RonFez.net = Geek Nerds
FBA = Fan Dork Geeks (hence the splinter from Wackbag)
PalTalk = Geek Nerd Fans

Considering that I'm a parent of two with a pretty responsible job, I'd like to to think those interests are more child-like than childish. Similar to how a man's love of sports may be child-like.

I can see some of Dave’s definitions but with the term geek there is a problem with what he said.

Someone can be a geek as defined by Dave but there is also "geek culture". Things like Star Wars, anime, video games, collectible action figures, comic books, etc...

Someone can be into geek culture with out being cynical and looking down on others that don't share your passion.

I love Star Wars, have a collection of Star Wars busts and Batman action figures, have every episode of Red Dwarf on DVD and probably own more graphic novels than regular novels. I would call myself a geek, but I am not a nose up in the air douche.

This pretty much reflects my own opinion on the issue. What makes one person's fun more legitimate than anyone else's? How is it cooler to be a walking football database than it is to be a walking Star Wars database?

Come on, you're a man with a family and you play video games and love comic books? It's time to man up, pal.

You act like the two (manning up and loving comic books, etc) are mutually exclusive. They are not, any more than being a sports fan and being an adult are mutually exclusive things.

I'm a 36 year old man who supports my family very well, and am a loving father and husband. And I'm well respected at my job and do very well there as well. That's what I call manning up.

What does it matter if my personal hobbies are reading comic books and playing video games as long as the other things are covered? I say it's not different than if I was a huge sports fan who watched games every week and followed teams really closely.

Every person has to have diversions from the regular day life. As long as those diversions don't get in the way of their responsibilities, etc., than that person is an adult regardless of where their passions may lie.

I always thought fantasy sports was D&D for wannabe jocks.

And I find that the parents with geek hobbies to be well adjusted. It's just a matter of taking an hour to read a graphic novel or playing a video game after the kids go to sleep (or even with the kids) instead of planting yourself in front of the tv for an entire Sunday to watch football for 8 hours straight.

I've never been to a party, never met anyone here. I think it would be a lot of fun to do either, and I do live close enough to the city so that I just might do that sometime.
Even tho I dont do all those personal things, I never miss a minute of the show. Look forward to it everyday. I am happy with the show however Ron and Fez want to deliver it to me. I think they are talented guys who create a place that is a lot of fun to visit everyday.
I know I am a geek and a dork. I own a comic shop. I have for thirty years. When the mood strikes me I make my customers call me Geek Dorkster. I'm not sure what is wrong with being either.
