this is from today's cnn.com
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/02/20/china.economy.family/index.html

basically, we are supposed to feel bad for unemployed chinese people now because the of the economy. In this article, it says that 20 million chinese are unemployed because of the US economy's collapse. (it uses the word "collapse" in the lead-in to the article from cnn's main page, it may not say it in the full article.)
a) our economy has not collapsed. it is not as strong as it could be, but the media hype surrounding the state of the economy only adds to the perception that we are in worse shape than we really are.

b) why should we care about chinese unemployment? we have our own unemployment issues to deal with.

To answer your questions in reverse order:

b. Higher Chinese unemployment means more incentive for their government to spent their cash pile at home rather than lend it back to us at cheap rates. Although it is in their interest to help get the US economy back on its feet since we're their best customer, that will defininately get pushed to the back burner if they have to take steps to keep social unrest down back home. That would mean higher interest rates and a much slower and harder climb out of the pit for us.

a. One could argue that the only reason our economy hasn't collapsed is that the government is throwing borrowed money at everything to cushion the fall. (To be fair, I think this is the only thing they can and should be doing at the moment.)

But I agree with your premise that the mainstream media sucks. They are encouraging ill-informed panic at the moment. What they should be doing is educating the public so that they can get to the proper frame of mind: a state of informed near-panic, like me.

We need to keepin mind that unemployment has a far greater impact on the Chinee.
They lose a job and an hour later feel like losing another one...

Then "the media" likely doesn't really annoy you since I think about a grand total of 7% of our TV media looks outside the US with any kind of depth.

I've got my own problems to worry about.fuck 'em.

Our main concern should be that if the Chinese economy crashes their govt. can destroy us.Think about it.We have run up record deficits. This money doesn't just magically appear we borrow it.The three largest holders of U.S. debt are China,Saudi Arabia, and Japan. If they decide to call in the note we're fucked.

It really is a beautiful system they have going when it works. The Chinese government owns most of their industry.American corporations such as Wallmart put americans out of work in order to buy cheap Chinese goods. The profits from these goods go right into the coffers of the Chinese government where they turn around and loan it back to the U.S. govt. to fund our out of control deficit spending. They own our asses in soooo many different ways.

So the media shouldn't report world events/happenings/trends and we should live in a bubble?

The US intelligence community doesn't think it's something we shouldn't worry about.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The global economic crisis has become the biggest near-term U.S. security concern, sowing instability in a quarter of the world's countries and threatening destructive trade wars, U.S. intelligence agencies reported on Thursday.

Revisionist history.
The Great Depression ended in 1933.
You can look it up.

Take a look at the quarterly GDP stats and you'll see the fallacy of the argument.
As the New Deal was implemented, GDP improved in a dozen or so quarters 20%, even over 30% a couple of times.
The GD dug such a big hole from 1929-1933, it just took a long time to get out.
They made significant progress in the 30s, but you gotta remember what they began with.

Just like the current recession.
It began with unemployment about 4.5%, but when it ends, unemployment will be much higher, and it will be long time before it gets back to that point.

While watching the news and seeing Weiner try to get to his car that would take him to his press conference, being bombarded by reporters, I felt sympathy for the guy.

He's a creep and a bad person for how he acted, but he's going to give up his job, probably lost his wife (which yes he deserves but still), and for the moment he's become a burnt out rising star in the democratic party. Give the guy some space and let him do what he has to do.

It's exactly what I hate about TMZ and all the reporters who hound people like that. Be fucking civil.

The three largest holders of US Debt are the government itself, US citizens/corporations and the federal reserve. The next largest are China, Japan and usually either OPEC or Britain.

If they were to sell it, they'd wreck their own economy. They all use it for currency manipulation, but none of them have anywhere near combined that of what private citizens own here in the US.

Any time China is buying up American debt it is to keep the yuan valued so that their exports remain lucrative. They're not buying it up to enable deficit spending, they're buying it up for their own economic sake. The chances of them ever dumping the debt en masse is probably about the same as winning the lotto without ever trying to play it.

I forget where I heard it, but someone said that they felt China's booming economy wouldn't last. This makes sense, because nothing ever lasts to the extent that it has, but they seemed to be hinting that they saw the country collapsing economicaly at a certain point.

sort of, but what keith said is true -- a lot of China's economic boom is through the exploitation of natural resources, shitting all over their environment and last but not least a massive real estate bubble. They probably won't totally crash their economy but China's GDP growth will come to a screeching halt sooner rather than later.
