View Full Version : Protein vs Carbs
Yo Doc! I always joke around about what a carnivore I am, but there's a lot of truth to it. Meat is the only thing that fills me up. I can literally eat a pound of pasta, but if there are no meatballs in it I'll be starving a half hour later.
Why is this?
I've also noticed I'll get wailing starvation headaches if I just have a slice or two of pizza for lunch. I need a roast beef sandwich or a hamburger to feel satisfied.
Weird, huh? It's been that way since I was a kid, though.
Let me know if you can make any sense of this.
P.S. - I think I could eat about 7 lbs. of fish and still be hungry too, but a steak will leave me completely satisfied.

Sure man, I think I have an idea or two.
Carbohydrates are readily absorbed by the body and rapidly stored into fat. All the body has to do is break a few chemical bonds and the whole load of pasta breaks up into sugars that the body can use. Then your insulin level rises rapidly, driving down your blood sugar. If it overshoots (and it often does with a large carbo-load), you'll get low blood sugar and an urgent need to eat again to normalize it. Keep that up and eventually your body will turn down its sensitivity to insulin and you get "glucose intolerance" or even worse, adult onset diabetes.
Proteins, on the other hand, are complex molecules with extremely complicated 3-D structures. It's much harder to break them down, and once you do, the body has to figure out what to do with (and how to store) all the lovely amino acids that it's presented. Protein is satisfying for longer than carbohydrates are, period. It's one of the tenets of the low-carb lifestyle.

Makes perfect sense, but why doesn't fish fill me up? It's just so light.
And I could eat steak, chicken, and turkey for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.
Fuck cereal.

This thread is literally a set up for mod quotes. I won't add my two cents as a follow up to that cause it will be seen as really really gay.
