It's a damned good question, man. If it was easily answered, there wouldn't be so much controversy (or people using them).
I mean, it's like crack...everyone knows it's bad for you, right? People still do it. With steroids, since they're "natural" substances, the arguments against them are even weaker on the surface.
My problem with steroids is multi-faceted. Forgetting the politics of sports and steroids (do we need to have a different set of records pre-steroid and post steroid, etc.), the evidence is there that taking 'roids on a chronic basis is just bad for you. Bad for everything other than building muscle mass, that is.
Steroids affect the liver, the nuts, the cardiovascular system, and the brain. I've seen guys with liver cancer whose only risk factor was abusing steroids. Every time I examine someone's nuts and they're the size of lima beans, I ask them how much deca they're taking. I'm never wrong.
On top of that, a lot of the steroids out there are black market medications...I don't even know where the hell they're made or if they're even what they say they are. How can you prove it? When you go to a pharmacy, there's a "chain of possession" that reassures you that the medication you're taking came from the manufacturer. And even THAT isn't perfect. How less perfect is buying an injectable from some guy you know?
I think testosterone is great for men who have testicular failure and need supplementation. For everyone else, they're just getting more than the body was designed to take. Just one look at this guy's steroid induced acne is enough for me:
