It's more than a time of fasting, more of penitence and self-reflection, and fasting can be perceived as a form of penance.

Common forms of penance during Lent include the following:

- abstaining from meat on Fridays (some pre-Vatican II Catholics also abstain from meat on Wednesdays)

- fasting on Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday and Good Friday ("fasting" in Catholicism means something different from other religions' traditions - you can eat, but you cannot consume more than one meal's worth of calories; I can't fast, so I don't. The Almighty and I have an understanding.)

- "giving up" something, usually a small indulgence like desserts or sweets or a pleasurable habit, like going to the movies, etc., that demonstrates a sacrifice in the person's life ... and they use the time/energy/money they would have spent on that to do some meditation, prayer or self-reflection (last year, Gvac gave up RonFez.net for Lent; it was rather interesting to see what happened during his absence and after his return)

There are a lot of ways to think about it. Using it as a reason to get back into shape is perfectly fine, too. Penance is supposed to be for your improvement! (OK, maybe it's stretching it a bit, but there's no theologian around to bash me for that.)

Holy Week is a bit more involved than Lent anyway ... you've got 3 Holy Days of Obligation (Palm Sunday, Holy/Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil in some traditions, including Catholic & Greek/Eastern Orthodox) and then Easter Sunday, plus 2 fast days, plus abstaining from meat ... no wonder it's such a big deal to have kielbasa and ham for Easter supper!!!

i don't think it's about suffering so much, rather about personal growth and sacrifice as a part that growth.

the sacrifices don't necessarily need to be about pain ... but sometimes, as my pastor explained it tonight, in order to better yourself you need to leave your own comfort zone.
that, in itself, can be challenging.
and in the process you might leave behind things that are comfortable in your life.
but the idea is to use this time to be a little bit more reflective on who we are and how we can work to be better, both in the eyes of a higher power and in our own honest evaluations of ourselves..
