It seems very strange.
You don't have to like Tool, but hating them is odd, because they are fantastic musicians. I was talking to someone about it, and think it has something to do with Bill Hicks (It's the only way we can connect Ronnie and the band).

Ron seems like he doesn't like any sort of prog rock or metal bands (he was trashing Black Sabbath fans the other day). Him not liking Tool does not seem out of character at all.
But Dave doing a Maynard impression today was fucking hilarious and accurate.

Nope, just a different rock fan.
After going to too many Tool concerts, I wish less people liked them. Maybe it would keep the "Ya, dude!"s away and the ticket prices away from the $70 range. I find it so strange that Tool became Jock Rock at some point. It's this intellectual, progressive rock that every flip cupper in the USA started enjoying. It's never made any sense to me.

I am an actual EXPERT on music. Tool is a great, great band. Always reaching for that extra something. A little like Radiohead does it but without so many computers. Maynard is an incredibly gifted musician and song writer. I think the band really nails the concept of listening to an ALBUM as opposed to a song. It is a little weird to sit and play one tool song. Listening to an entire album is terrific at the gym or in the car. "Eulogy" is really the only stand alone song by TOOL that I can think of. Don't take it out on the band when they become as popular as you always hoped they would be and have to play bigger venues to accomodate more tards. When you like a new band, don't you tell all of your friends that they are great and all your friends should listen? Well, that is what happens to bands like TOOL, KINGS OF LEON, BLACK MOTORCYCLE CLUB, BLACK KEYS and even JOHN LEGEND. They are great, you tell everyone who tells everyone and one day you are sitting in the Hollywood Bowl thinking, "This would be so bad ass if it were in a club." Then you realize that the entire idea of selling records and songs is just to say +cardinals -yankees

I love Jay Mohr a little more than I already did.
Hit the nail on the head. The albums are meant to be played as ALBUMS
One of the defining moments of my youth was tripping my nuts off so hard we could barely walk. It was the day Lateralus came out. We turned it on, set the album on repeat, crawled onto my buddies pool cover (live, 5 of us), and stared at the stars and listened to Lateralus over and over.

I kinda like Tool and Ronnie doesn't seem to. It's Ron's opinion and I can't understand why anyone would think Ron should or shouldn't like a band. Just like the people that call up about Ashley Madison. I like to listen to the man, but I'm not going to expect him to like the same things as me just because I'm a fan of his. I'm arguing to myself and i should stop.
Tool gives me a headache.
I don't care what "fantastic musicians" they are; if a band doesn't move me I can't listen to them.

meh, whatever. most of the music mr b. loves does nothing for me. what i found odd was his implying (or perhaps just outright stating) that tool was ripping someone else off. he said something like he'd lived thru the 90s so he heard the original version. i think he was implying they copied from NiN. i love NiN myself, but don't see how tool is copying from their style or anyone else's.

i don't think even people who were impressed with his talent thought he made good "music" which is a huge difference. reminds me of some german metal band a friend used to like to mention sounded like 4 guys all soloing at the same time. who cares if you have great talent if it doesn't come together? i need to find out the name of that group.

Ron's comments weren't really that harsh.
And the fact that he compared Tool to Radiohead and NIN leads me to believe he was either kidding or really doesn't know much about that type of music.
It's sort of like how I think all country or junkie rock sounds exactly the same. To a fan, it probably doesn't, but it sounds the same to me.

If you don't like Tool because it just isn't your cup of tea or style or whatever...that is cool. Everybody gets their own opinions...for God's sake Coldplay is popular. But it's ludicrous to say they just repeat themselves or have no emotion to the music.
I'm guessing that those that hate them listened to the few sub-5 minute radio songs they have had and didn't really investigate much further. The arrangements and instrumentation of their albums are amazing and borrow much more from classical music and mathematics than NIN or Radiohead. Offset by Manynards vocals, I think it is some of the most original and emotive music that has been out in the last 20 years.
That being said, Lou Reed blows. And the colored girls say...

There's plenty of songs you could have picked that sort of sound the same, but The Pot and Sober sound nothing like each other.
Tool seems to have stalled at their current sound, however. Their last two albums 10,000 Days and Lateralus sound very similar in spots.
Plus, their growth from Undertow to Aenima was incredible. If you don't hear musical growth between those two albums, you're just not listening.

But I think people get caught up in the superficial "sound" of a group and may miss what is actual growth. Sure, the distortion on Tool Albums has been essentially the same from Aenema to now, so if you are playing a Dropped D chord from one album it will sound like the D chord from the most recent album. And Dropped D tuning automatically has a signature sound to it, which is one of its flaws to me. I wish they would experiment with some other tunings, actually. Danny Carey is a monster on the drums and wants to flex his ability, so you are always going to have a drummer playing parts in 5/6 time when everyone else is in 3/4. So I can see that a quick glance at some of these signatures for the band that have endured would appear to be repeating the same thing over and over, but I think that they are just part of the inherent physical sound of the band, and don't necessarily represent the whole of the music.
Early albums like Opiate and Undertow show a fairly basic verse/chorus/bridge song structure that you would expect from a garage-type band. But from Aenema on, I think you can hear a shift to musical movements like classical that change the characteristics within the songs dramatically. Sometimes there are no clearly defined verses or choruses, so that you only focus on where the song is taking you in the present moment. These shifts are what create drama, tension, and emotion. Its kinda like a advanced version of what the Pixies did with their quiet/loud/quiet/loud forumula.
But, at the same time, I was just listening to the Humpty Dance on my I-pod, so i may not be the best judge.

No worries. I think I use to be a "greatest band ever" guy for them, but that had more to do with the time in my life that I discovered them than anything else. I still am high on how great they are at what they are, and I think in the realm that they are delegated to, they are one of the best. But you know, times and tastes change.
More than anything, I just like discussing that kind of stuff.

I think it depends on your definition of their realm, if you stick them with NiN and Radiohead then yes, they are the best to me, if you expand it to "metal" I would put a huge number of bands ahead of them (Sabbath, Maiden, Opeth, Lamb of God, Devin Townsend to start the list).
Although, I used to think Guns 'n' Roses was the best band ever so I definitely have no place in any discussion.

True, I guess you have to specify a little. I wouldn't put them right next to Sabbath as far as style, and you also have to account for generational differences. Sabbath and Maiden owe more to the blues than anything else, as far as musical stylings. I guess they are kinda in the vein of LOG and Opeth. Don't know any Devin Townsend. I personally like Tool better than the other two, but that gets back to the personal choice stuff. I like the offset of the heavy music with the more ethereal vocal stuff. Essentially, I like heavy music without screamo vocals.
And there is nothing wrong with GNR, for what they are, either. I haven't listened to Axl's new album yet, I just can bring myself to ruin my perceptions...

I don't say so dispargingly, I can appreciate moments of music with both bands, but the culture and audience about them seem to be this feverty devoted and nerdy branch of the music tree. Were I an artist, it would be the audience I crave. I'd put hardcore ACDC guys in the same realm, but DC concerts are a little more balanced due to their massive crossover success.

I agree about Coheed and Cambria/Rush comparison. And I don't mind listening to CAC so much. Maybe I was touched when I was a child while Moving Pictures was playing in the background. It really is a disproportionate amount of hatred for Rush that I have.
All these bands really do get a rabid fanbase from certain people, and as an artist, that has to be pretty gratifying. Tool definitely gets some fratguy bleedover just because of the sheer agression, but what can ya do?

Sorry, don't see it. I can appreciate some of his stuff, but for the most part Lou Reed was about everything that went in around the music. The hipness of the Underground, the fashion, the high-profile affiliations with others like Bowie. He has a few flashes of real brilliance in a few melodies and lyrics, but the entirety of his catalogue doesn't compare to most of the others of even his era. But he was a junkie and an outsider, so it is always more hip to claim to be a Lou Reed fan than not.
He's an icon, but he ain't that great.

Who cares what Ron likes? You hear the kind of music he has played as openers and the kind of music he always talks about liking. Tool doesn't fit into that category.
My personal opinion on Tool is they bore me after awhile. Owned all their albums a few years ago and sold them, which is odd for me because I usually never get rid of music but I didn't even want to own their CDs anymore.
Musicianship, or the ability to play your instrument doesn't mean you're a songwriter that connects with a large group of people. And while Tool isn't in any danger of going bankrupt, there are some people who will hate ANYTHING.

I don't want to sit here and bash Lou Reed all day, it just happened to be one of the artists brought up earlier.
And I kinda agree about Tool being pretentious too. I just happen to think they back it up a little better than Reed. I don't quite get why anybody cares what Ron or anybody else thinks about an artist, and I have these same thoughts whenever the action/comic book movie crowd gets so pissed when he talks about his hatred of those movies. I don't really like Tool that much...big deal. They're a talented band, but they're not really my thing. I've heard all their albums, and even saw them in concert a few years ago (thanks to a comp ticket), but I'll never purposely listen to them.
As for Lou Reed, my love for him has nothing to do with jumping on any bandwagon. I first checked him out in the late 70's mainly because of articles in Creem and the fact that so many of the punk bands of that time namechecked him as an influence. I fell in love with the Velvet's material, and later moved on to his solo material. Yeah, he's had some lackluster moments, but who hasn't? Dylan had his bad eras, but that doesn't negate the quality of the classics. I'd rather follow somebody who is not afraid to make mistakes for the sake of their art (and I'm not saying that Tool doesn't take chances).

Tool had a good first album and then made it over and over again. Talk about no musical progression over more than a decade. There is nothing really wrong with tool but if you've heard one song then you've heard them all. The Ramones basically did the same thing and made a pretty good career out of it as well.

Chevelle has never not been a shity band, but before they went all uber-nu-metal/emo, I remember seeing this on 120 Minutes and being stunned how blatantly EVERYTHING was ripping off Tool into a really shitty watered-down version. They weren't trying to hide it at all!

Didn't Chevelle do a note for note rip off of the Deftone's "Be Quiet and Drive" on "Send the Pain Below"?

I've always been a fan of Chevelle, and now I know why (although their new stuff isn't very good).
The band Hurt owes a lot to Tool, as well.

My friends tried to sell me the whole "If you like Tool, you'll love Chevelle" thing a few years back.
The guy kinda sounded like Maynard, but the lyrics seem as if they were written by a teenage girl.
