View Full Version : Music
Hey, HK! What exactly is it about music that so moves people? And how come each person is different in this regard? Certain music can cause such ecstasy within me, I can only liken it to being possessed by some great spirit. I don't even feel like I'm really there; it's like I've left my body and am soaring high above everyone.
Certain other people, however, have little regard for music, and merely think of it as "background noise." How can we as human beings vary so greatly?

I think music is each persons individual orgasm...each type or each tune...

I'll respond to the latter question first. You ask how people can so vastly differ. That's an easy one which you already know the answer to. Personality, behavior, beliefs, intelligence, customs, language, etc are all products of a combination of genetics and environment.
Music theorists, while quick to point out benefits of music, acknowledge that there is little consensus on why or how music effects different people.
Part of the difficulty in understanding results from the fact that the processes in the brain involved in our perception of music are distributed over many centers in the brain. These centers can even change with learning, experience, or in different contexts of listening.
Music "therapy" has been shown to be effective (in some people) in pain control, increased cognitive functioning, and in decreasing levels of anxiety. It has been used sucessfully in treatment of people who have had strokes.
There are many similar areas, in medicine for example, where one treatment is completely effective for one person and completely ineffective in others.
It is hoped that the human genome, when completely understood, will help us gain further understanding in the genetic component to music appreciation.
