Granted, this is not exactly scientific but what the hell:
Virgil Griffith (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/149493-science-sez-lil-wayne-makes-you-stupid-sufjan-and-radiohead-make-you-smart) is a 25-year-old grad student at Caltech, and in his spare time he makes elaborate charts comparing people's SAT scores to their tastes in music and books. And you know what that means: Caltech grad students have way too much spare time. I match up with the higher end of the U2 group almost precisely. Seems fairly accurate at first glance.

Please explain.
His methods were a basic survey based study which can be fairly accurate if you have enough people to answer and not asking for specific recall i.e. what was your favorite band when you took the SATs. I do not feel like finding the WSJ article again, but asking someone what their favorite band is, then having about 100 people, and comparing it to their SAT score has flaws such as recalling what your favorite band was at the time you took the test and having to few respondents (recall past a week or 2 is a pain in the ass). There is a huge margin of error.
The way I would design this study is to pick 100 students right before they take the SAT, design a questionnaire that not only asks (besides age and sex) their favorite band, but asks for their 2nd and 3rd choices, and who was their favorite band prior to the current one. This gives you a small amount of historical data and adds to your overall analysis such as music type, etc. Once the SAT scores are back, I would ask not only the score but use my questionnaire again (because it is 2-3 months since they took the test) so it adds even more validity in a sense. Based on this information one can perform a simple statistical analysis using something that in simple terms equates to averages (a bit more than that but I want to keep it simple) and a pass/fail method (another simple method).

HA! I listen to music on every spectrum of that chart and I got an 1100 (out of 1600) on the SAT's. I guess it's right.
Isn't there some new fangled scoring now for the test. I think it started the year my sister took them.

No way? I hope this is an exaggeration.
When I took my SATs I already know I was going into the military, just did not tell my parents yet. I had been up all night drinking with my friends, got home and practiced how to walk in my driveway before going inside because my mom would stay up until my brother and I got home, and passed out after setting the alarm. Woke up at 0930 and I am certain I was still legally drunk, did not shower, jumped in my truck and took a couple Tums. I think I made it through the first section of the SATs before just darkening random bubbles. When I left the center I puked right outside the doors, got in my truck, swallowed some more Tums, and went home to take a nap before the evening began again. My mom was pissed when the scores cam in the mail, I think I got around a 1000 and we both knew I could have done better.

beethoven is high but classical is low?
i think this shows that although beethoven listeners scored high, that people who just listen a generic 'classical' as their favorites scored lower
therefore the 'classical' listeners dont really listen to classical music, they just list 'classical' to appear smart

It's based on what they listed under music on their facebook page.
Griffith "used aggregated Facebook data about the favorite bands and books among students of various colleges and plotted them against the average SAT scores at those schools, creating a tongue-in-cheek statistical look at taste and intelligence."
So, yeah, non-specific people who listed "classical" or "jazz" are dumber (go to dumber schools) than people who list specifics.
