How can you tell identical twins apart?

Thanks to Wikipedia, I've learned that belly buttons are scars and not genetically created, so that is one way.

Any others?

* Belly buttons. Even the best doctor on earth can never ensure that he cuts the umbilical cord in exactly the same way to produce identical belly buttons.

* Hair and hair whorls. My boys have the same hair color but one has 1 hair whorl, the other one has 2. The way their hair is distributed around the whorls is also different.

* Birthmarks and moles. As my babies grew older, I noticed differences in skin marks and moles.

* Scars. Despite inoculations, my son F had chicken pox and has a couple of chicken pox scars on his face. Faint scars, but I know where to look at. His brother didn?t get chicken pox and has therefore no pox marks. I`m pretty sure other scars, especially knee scars, will follow.

* Teeth. Although they were teething almost at the same time, my boys` baby teeth aren?t identical at all. R has one incisor tip broken off during a fall.

Identical twins are indeed clones of each other, and have identical genetic programming. However, just naked DNA ain't all there is to the story. Nearly every gene has its own switch that determines how it's expressed, and this varies from individual to individual seemingly randomly. This explains how some identical twins don't look much alike, or how one could be gay and the other straight.

Ways you can tell twins apart:

1) any "acquired" traits, like surgical or traumatic scars, dental work, etc. These have nothing to do with genetics and are quite reliable. And you're right, umbilical cord scars are different because they're caused by random factors when the cord is cut and the thing eventually falls off.

2) any differences in expression of DNA traits; fatter face, straighter nose, etc. Once you actually learn a set of twins' names, you can usually tell them apart. Twins who can fool people by, say, switching out during a date are uncommon.

3) here's a good way to tell twins apart: Let's say one is named "Pete" and the other is named "Re-pete". Simply say "What's your name?" If the twin says "Pete" it's Pete.

does this answer your question? I feel like I'm missing some context or something.

my aunt had twins, and my uncle burned one on the forehead with a cigarette, so he could tell them apart.

your pal,

When I was stationed/lived in Germany I had two young lady friends, identical twins try that with their newly acquired boyfriends. One boyfriend thought it was hot, the other dumped Alexa (the one I had a crush on) and both twins were highly disappointed. I could tell them apart from the first day they passed out in my bed, I wish more would of happened but my gf said differently.

Just a good memory to share.

My father and his brother are identical twins but they've never looked alike to me. When I was a kid in school all my friends would say how they couldn't tell my dad and my uncle apart and I thought they were nuts.

I guess when you have one close to you they're not so identical.

I think part of it is, when you meet identical twins for the first time, you "can't tell them apart" because you just don't know which is which. After you figure it out, it's easy.

I was in an office once and these two women had similar hair styles and I remember thinking "how can I tell which one is Pat and which one is Judy?" eventually it just registered and it came naturally. Same deal with twins, just a little more extreme.
