I'm not sure. Since Maxwell's hasn't been mentioned on R&F, I don't know if they are even still in business. The website still lists 2006 at it's copyright date, so I don't know if it's been updated or not.
I did some comparisons, and the place in New Brunswick may not be as overpriced as I thought. A filet in New Brunswick is 37, at Maxwell's it's 41. Also, side dishes at New Brunswick at 5/piece, at maxwell's, they are at least 10, but you get three for 21. It's still a better deal in New Brunswick.
Who knows how much the drinks are. In New Brunswick, it was 4.50 for a bottle of Stella.
The place is NB was a REALLY nice place to eat. A great meal.

How can you tell how good the food is by comparing it to a place you've eaten at that has similar prices? You need to eat at both places then make a comparison. They don't have the same chefs or get their ingredients from the same places. Who give's a fuck how the prices match up?

I wasn't really talking about the quality of the food, I was just talking about things being overpriced. Traditionally, a restaurant in the city will be more expensive than one in the suburbs.
But for what it's worth, a steak's a steak, especially in the high quality steakhouses. I've never had one filet mignon in a higher-quality place that severely detracted from other filet experiences...
If we're talking something that is more complicated, like a pasta dish, I could see your point. But the classic filet mignon is a piece of meat, seasoned slightly, broiled at 1900 degrees.

gotta disagree. there is a tremendous different in prices of meat that are quailty based. cuts, aging, quality, organic vs. non organic, grass fed vs corn fed. so many variables. even at the supermarket, i can buy a ribeye for $7 or over $20 and yes, there is a massive difference in quality.

hey now, if anything we had potatoes back in the good old days... it's called capitalism when you can't chose the potato with your meal and have to buy an entire/ additional different meal to get the ones you want

You don't wanna get a filet there. You need something with the bone in. They have an entire Potato side menu that looks delish. Next time you guys are in LI we'll take you to teh delicious steakhouse and you'll change your mind about steak.
If I buy a tenderloin from Shop Rite v my local butcher, and prepare them exactly the same way, you'll be able to tell the difference.

You're also talking at a man who orders his filet done "medium" ... no matter how good the steak is, cooking filet to that level of doneness isn't gonna have an impact.
If I cook filet at home, I have to have his butterflied so it doesn't become shoe leather while it's cooking.

1) When we went out with Stugots and Regina I got it medium rare and I enjoyed it.
2) I don't like steak as rare as you do.

No, I get that - the quality of steak between Shop Rite and Wegmans I can definitely taste and see. And then I can definitely tell the difference of a quality of steak between Outback and Longhorn vs. an Independent Fancypants Steakhouse.
I also mis-read the Craftsteak menu. They have a whole section dedicated to potatoes that I didn't see.
BLASPHEMY. MATTY YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO EAT STEAK EVER.
OK, I'm going to be honest here. I grew up in a house where my father was consistently adamant about food safety. It was part of his job.
EVERY SINGLE MEAT my mom cooked was either Medium-Well or Well. so it was hard for me to adjust down from that to Medium.
I also had issues with an underdone steak back in the day that the mouth feel was all off and it was really gross, almost mushy.

Nothing's wrong with medium, if you're ordering a lesser cut of meat or a hamburger.
If you're paying for filet, if you cook it too long, it gets tough and dry. There's no point to ordering FILET anything more well done than medium rare, especially if rare bugs you out.
If you prefer your meat cooked more, order a different cut. You'll probably enjoy it a great deal more.
Personally, I enjoy my filet rare, but prefer other cuts of steak cooked a bit more.
1) When we went out with Stugots and Regina I got it medium rare and I enjoyed it.
2) I don't like steak as rare as you do.
OK, I will give you that with the steak at the schmancy joint.
But, again, that was an independent steakhouse versus the chains we'd been eating at, like Longhorn or whatever.
If you are getting premium meat, and paying premium prices, there's a reason. It's not something that fell off the back of a truck or sat in ShopRite on its little wad of toilet paper atop the disgusting foam and covered in saran wrap ... it was likely ordered from a supplier the chef knows very well.
I also consume raw seafood; this doesn't make me better than you and I respect your preferences. Hence having your filet butterflied so I don't have to worry about overcooking my own delicious steak.
