Wood Carving a Marrionette....Anyone ever try to do it?

Does anyone still carve wood...or whittle?
I used to as a kid, birds, fish, and a Pine Box Derby car.
I decided to do something with my free time...and try to make a marrionette mostly out of wood.
One thing....no Idea how!!!!
I have loads of wood types to choose from, I figure pine for starters..but would like to make one out of Hickory...(I know, hardwood).
I want to do it all by hand, no power tools.
Any ideas/help?
