some would scoff, but ketchup is the ideal hot dog topping.

mustard is okay, but the spices in mustard are similar-tasting to what's already in the dog. ketchup, on the other hand, adds wonderful new flavors.

i like sauerkraut, but only on the side (like coleslaw), cuz it makes the bun turn nasty and gummy.

as for that onions-in-sauce crap, it's terrible!!

I love me some sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard (like maybe horseradish mustard or whole-seed brown mustard) ... or sometimes yellow mustard and chili ... or sometimes chili and cheese ... or chili and RAW onions ... but I don't get much of that anymore.

Matt doesn't like sauerkraut and it's wasteful to make it only for one person and I can't remember the last time we had chili dogs. *sigh*

Onions

Then Ketchup

Top with Mustard.

~Katja~
03-17-2009, 06:06 AM
used to be just mustard or ketchup (or a mix) but now also like some relish on occasion

I don't like yellow mustard... I prefer Dijon or a medium spiced mustard...

kdubya

Onions, chopped really fine, almost like a reslish, and yellow mustard, the cheaper the better.

maybe relish, but usualy just the onions and mustard.

Chili and cheese are good but then it becomes a chilidog, and in my mind that is a new catagory.

i probably have 5-10 in a given year

mostly during the summer grilled (i can only stomach grilled franks) with a little brown mustard and sauerkraut on a toasted bun

and once in a while i'll swing by gray's papaya on 86th for the recession special: one with mustard & sauerkraut and the other with relish and a papaya juice to wash it all down

usually by july, i'm disgusted by the taste all together

On a regular dog I like yellow mustard and onion. There's a place in town that makes pretty good Chicago dogs.
-yellow mustard
-green pickle relish
-chopped onions
-sport bell peppers/pickled seranno peppers
-kosher dill pickle
-a couple thin cut tomato slices
-celery salt

Ketchup isn't a basic thing to put on a hot dog. It's for limp wristed hayseeds who pee while sitting down.

Mustard. Maybe some onions, chili, and cheese. Bacon, mayo, and mustard on a hot dog fucking rules.

It depends on the dog. If it's a good dog like a Hebrew, Nathan's or a jumbo dog of some sort I'll go with spicy mustard and some purple onion. If the dog itself isn't anything special it's just mustard please. Chili aint bad on any of the above either but is usually reserved for special occasions.

spicy brown mustard + cooked vidalia onions in sauce.

ToiletCrusher
03-21-2009, 03:07 PM
Not an option but should be.... simply called "sauce".

It's not quite chili sauce but it is a concoction made of ground beef with a whole bunch of spices and simmered for a while and is rather nice.

Only a few places I know of to get it and in Buffalo. They are Louie's and Texas Red Hots. Both are local and probably part of the reason Buffalo has so many obese people.

Saturday 8 & I stopped at the New England Hot Dog Co. in Freehold for lunch. I got a Vineyard Haven dog (diced tomato, cucumber, red onion, shredded lettice & ranch dressing) and it was quite tasty.

Ordinarily, I'll go for mustard (brown or horseradish), onion, and relish.

My favorite hot dogs anywhere are Bubba Dogs, sold out of a cart by the beaches in Sea Isle City, NJ. The only time I'll mix mustard with ketchup, with grated cheese and the secret ingredient: little potato sticks. One (or two) of those dogs with an Arnold Palmer, and you have the best lunch out there.

ozzie
01-31-2012, 06:21 AM
If it's a good dog, it doesn't need anything other than mustard.

If there's decent kraut available, sometimes a little of that, and maybe some diced onions.

Chili, cheese and onions is great too, but it really has to be the right chili. That "hot dog chili" they sell in cans is not the right chili.

And put a little vodka in that Arnold Palmer, and you've got yourself a nice "John Daly"!

Since you're from the south you probably mean raw onions, right?

Yup.

When in season, there's nothing better than fresh, sweet, locally grown Vidalia onions!

I could eat those things like an apple.

Occasionally we'll sautee some onions and peppers if we're doing dogs along with sweet sausages and stuff, but yeah, just raw onion is just great.

sailor

I don't know, I love raw onions on a burger, but it's seemed weird the few times I had them on a hot dog. Probably a combination of it not being what I grew up with and it not being what I expected when I ordered.

Over the summer I hit up Maui's Dog House down in Wildwood. I had the J-Bell, which is freshly cooked bacon, sauteed onions and BBQ sauce.

Although BBQ sauce violates my rule of no ketchup on a hot dog, I'll allow it. It's sooooo good.
