..for a month

i heard fez's failure (for his lent) and i thought "hmmm..i wonder if i can do it"

so i started today, not going to eat meat til april 15th (tax day!). I'll see how i do. Still going to eat cheese, eggs and milk though

I already had a veggie burger from Burger King. Pretty good but they put too much mayo on it. Next time i'll tell them to "take it easy" on that

i already eat a ton of veggie burgers, not that i think they taste like burgers but they are a good meal on themselves

also, because of this client i have, i have a ridiculous amount of cereal in my apartment and i'm not a big cereal eater..so the only way i could put it to use is to put some self imposed diet restrictions upon myself

BK has veggie burgers? I did not even know that.

I thought it was funny when I met my friend in the city and they wanted to go to this steakhouse (Old Homestead) the waiter looked at me like a lunatic when all I ordered was a salad and a few veggie sides... lol
He thought I must be insane to go to a steakhouse and not eat steak.

Ladies and gents, we have another Katja modquote.

Thebazile78
03-14-2009, 04:24 PM
(1) Katja - yes, BK has a veggie burger; it's not on the menu and you usually have to ask for it. It's one of those patties made from smooshed up vegetables not a textured soy-protein one like Boca burgers or other brands. It is quite tasty! (If Jopey and I are going to our mom's together, we typically stop at a BK on the Parkway to get veggie burgers as a snack.)

(2) In college, I stopped eating meat altogether when I ended up living on the same campus as the largest dining hall ... where I'd gotten sick from meat-involved dinners more than once during the previous year. Between that and walking everywhere, I lost the 25 lbs. I gained during Freshman year plus another 10-15 lbs. ... I didn't notice it until the Spring semester when I had to replace all my blue jeans.

It's easy enough to do ... just remember that eliminating meat doesn't necessarily mean you have to "replace" it with something like textured-soy or seitan (which is wheat gluten) or something. Some of the textured-soy on the market is pretty disgusting ... I have a severe dislike of the Morningstar Farms "Veggie Crumbles" because I think they taste like Windex. However, that doesn't mean I hate Morningstar Farms' products: their spicy black bean burgers and Buffalo-style chick'n nuggets are pretty tasty. But, if given a choice between those and the veggie bites from Veggie Patch, I'll go with the Veggie Patch ones any day of the week.

If you like mushrooms, portobella mushrooms are a good, earthy option. They hold up to sauteeing, grilling and pan-frying pretty well. In addition, they pair well with lots of different cheeses, from fresh mozzarella to blue cheese to swiss to sharp cheddar, so you can pretty much treat them as you would a hamburger.

On the budget-friendly side of things, beans and rice make a complete protein when cooked together ... and you can season them up pretty much any way you like. Good Eats has been running an episode covering New Orleans-style red beans and rice (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/red-beans-and-rice-recipe/index.html) that I'd like to try myself ... although I think the recipe calls for pickled pork, but you may be able to switch something like 'Smokra from Rick's Picks (http://rickspicksnyc.com/jar.php?jar=14) into the recipe to get the same kind of flavors without the meat.

Good luck and happy eating ... incidentally, on Food Network's website, they just posted a recipe for Guinness and onion soup from Michael Chiarello (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/michael-chiarello/guinness-and-onion-soup-with-irish-cheddar-crouton-recipe/index.html) that looks yummy. (And it's meat-free ... true, it uses beef stock, but you can always switch out vegetable stock ... or use the rationale that if it's not on the bone, it doesn't count.)

(1) Katja - yes, BK has a veggie burger; it's not on the menu

they had the veggie burger right on the drive thru menu. got one of them and an order of mozzarella sticks. They put so much mayo on the burger that it dropped on my carpet. i cleaned it up but my dog still licked the shit out of the carpet and even tried ripping up the carpet. So vegetarian food made my dog a carpet muncher

Why is it that carnivores feel like they are going to die for lack of meat...FOR A MONTH??? I've been meat-free (yes, including fish) for 20 years and I yet breathe. Dairy free for 9 years. Besides augmenting your diet with round things disguised as burgers, find a mix of other things that can replace the protein and vitamins you had derived from meat. Keep in mind also that veggie burgers, while generally healthy, are still processed foods. Eat some damn green vegetables and fruit and rice and beans and, in emergencies, cock.

But if you really love meat so much, then eat meat. Maybe moderate your meat and/or choose non-fast food meats and/or step down to leaner meats. And eat cock. Lots and lots of cock.

I went vegetarian about two months ago or so.

It's pretty easy for the most part...and it sure as hell has made me a much better cook.

The one thing that's tough is if you're on the road. When I was in Tampa last week for Spring Training, it was brutal, because I didn't really know where anything was, and the place is saturated with steakhouses and fast food.

Patrice was talking about this on the O&A show a couple weeks ago actually...if you just give up meat for health reasons only, you're pretty likely to fail, because there's just so much stuff to tempt you. You really kind of have to believe it's not natural to eat meat.

CofyCrakCocaine
03-15-2009, 04:56 PM
My brother is a vegetarian. Oh wait, he eats chicken and fish. And turkey. Still calls himself a vegetarian. I bet all you vegetarians are big cheaters like him, too. I'd mention the Schwarzbein cookbook, and how to use broccoli raab, cilantro and chickpeas to good effect, but you're all cheaters.

Cheaters.

I kind of disagree. You don't necessarily have to believe it's not natural to eat meat, but you do have to have other reasons to cut meat from your diet besides the foggy "health reasons."

I happen to love a good steak, but beef can be expensive and I don't like chicken, so when I was subletting my first apartment between Sophomore and Junior year of college, I went vegetarian. But that whole vegetarian kick had started when I was assigned to a dorm on the "main" campus with the big dining hall for my Sophomore year. During Freshman year, the mass-cooked meat on the main food lines had made me sick more than once, so I made up my mind that I wasn't going to eat any of it - and the dining hall had a very well-appointed salad bar, so I didn't starve. (Plus, with a weekly pasta night and takeout cheese subs, I had other options.)

Even when I had to move back in with my dad after graduation, I kept meat to a minimum, often cooking for my brother Joe (who is also a mostly meat-free diner) when a meat-heavy dish was on the menu. (Or when our grandmother was assigned to cook something ... the woman hates cooking, yet she's left in charge of it. God help my family!)

I also spent 2 years after college living with an Orthodox Jewish friend, so that meant keeping kosher - and Glatt Kosher meat is EXPENSIVE - so I greatly reduced the amount of meat I bought then, too. (Although the few times I splurged on good Glatt Kosher steak it was heavenly. And the chicken's not so bad as long as you go over it to be sure all the feathers have been removed.)

Now, I'm trying to find a good balance between how I'd prefer to eat (more fish and veggies ... with the occasional treat of a steak), the way my husband would prefer to eat (grilled chicken) and our food budget. It's challenging, as there are a few vegetables he won't touch that I love, like squash, beets and brussels sprouts, but we've done pretty well so far.

I won't say it's easy to "give up" meat, but it does force you to be more creative and adventurous in your cooking and eating habits!

The disgustingness of the Rutgers dining hall was a thing of legend... Bazile ain't lying about that! I never went there and I still heard tales of yore regarding the grodified meat they had there.

And every vegetarian (who isn't a cheater) claims they eat veggie because it 'tastes good' not because 'it's healthy'. The cheaters don't eat certain meats because 'I like those animals'. I don't eat veal because 'it's cruel'. Similar to why most people work out- it makes them feel good more than it's for health purposes.

Side story: One hindu guy was trying to ingratiate himself into my good side by saying "Hey mahN! lets get a ham-burger sometime! dont tell my wife but i love a good burger!' I never could trust him after that.

Ok...I can see fish, maybe. But chicken and turkey?? I'm not even sure how you rationalize that. He's just a healthier eater (unless it's a lot of fried chicken and fried fish).

I don't eat fish. The closest thing to an animal I eat is eggs.

It was just Brower that had the high-volume/belly-bomb status, although I'd heard stories about how wretched Tillet was. But, never having eaten at Tillet, I have no first-hand experience to prove or disprove this. (Although I distinctly remember having had friends who swore by Tillet ... I haven't the first idea why the experiences were so disparate!)

Honestly, the best was Cooper (over on Douglass) followed by Nielson (on Cook) and Busch, with Davidson (on Busch, now inactive) being the default for most consistent take-out.

I was raised in an Italian house (even though Mon is Irish) so we are pasta 3-4 times a week and very little red meat so it wasn't difficult when I went vegetarian in grad school (1987).

But, like K.C. found, it was hard when I was traveling back in the early days (before most places had anything close to a vegetarian option). Most of the teams would stop at a McDonalds or a Burger King after games and I would just order some fries or I would really screw up the hired help and ask for a Big Mac, minus the burger. Now it's a bit easier since BK has a veggie burger and most places have a salad option.

And CofyCrakCocaine, I eat salads because they are good for you and they taste good!

You can also order it online or make it yourself (takes time & effort, though) ... and, no, I am not kidding about making it yourself.

Alternately, if you can't find seitan, tempeh would work nicely in a burrito as well.
