My desktop has an annoying feature whenever I run anything graphic-intensive on my comp. The fan kicks into high gear and it sounds like a goddamn vacuum cleaner going off.
Even when I left the windows open during winter the damn thing went noisy. For reference, it freaks out even when I play games that are 5+ years old so I doubt it's the amazing graphics demand I'm putting on the machine.
Yes, I'm going to staples and buying another fan. I wonder if getting a new fan is going to ruin my computer's cooling and/or violate the warranty. Oh well, can't be helped.
Um. I dunno why I made this a thread. I guess I just wanted to vent. HAR HAR.

Well the fan might be controlled by your motherboard based on the CPU load. If it the CPU load increases, which it would when you play a game, especially if you have on-board graphics, the fan speed increases. I doubt it takes into account the temperature.
Getting a quieter fan would probably do the trick. Also you could disable the intelligent fan feature. If your CPU has a sufficient heatsink/fan, I doubt you would have any problems...

i am glad you posted this
because i get this fan noise alot
it'll be softer then louder and then softer and then louder
it fades in and out in any memory-heavy application
drives me crazy
Look into new fans, some manufacturers put cheap fans in their laptops

You should get some programs.
Google search these and D/L
CPUZ
Real temp
Core Temp
Speedfan
Only one of your fans are controlled by the mobo. The cpu cooler fan.
You can do several things to help cooling.
- Keep the fins of any heatsink fins CLEAN. (canned air works well)
- Do some cable management.
- Make a natural airflow if your going to buy a new fan. (ie front to back. as most cases have fans on the back for P.S. and case.
- Maybe purchase a new CPU cooler if you plan on keeping the PC.
What kind of PC do you have. any pics?
Also when you get those programs DLed. let me know what the temps are and what type of processor

update?
Ive not had much time to devote to this problem but I took it apart and used can air to spray out all the dust. I also found out that the major noise maker is the fan for the video card. The card's a Nvidia 8800GT distributed by EVGA. It is seriously the loudest fan I've ever heard in my life, which is odd considering most people online seem to hear nothing from it.
I tried updating the driver but that doesn't stop the noise. I think the fan is fucked and so am I because I know jack and shit about how to fix this problem.

this happened to my old comp as the fan was failing. The comp would slowly start to over heat and so it would make the fan go crazy after awhile, i guess till it cooled down enough, then it would stop again. Eventually it just went, along with the power supply

Hmmmm, I haven't seen many fans that can be replaced off video cards. But I'm no expert. If you see screws on the fan it may be removable and replacable. If not, is the card under any kind of warranty?
If none of that works, live with it until it dies I guess and get a new one.

Sorry, should have done this before I posted but I did a google search on your card and that doesn't really look like a fan you can replace.
Blow canned air directly into the fan and vents with the power off and the cord disconnected from it. It could help but I doubt it. Your best bet is a warranty through the company that made it.

get a new VC cooler on it.

where can I finds me a VC cooler? staples? bestbuy? newegg (duh)? EVGA doesn't provide any support, parts, accessories, or replacements for their fans. I'd likely have to send in the card for repairs, though I'm starting to wonder if maybe the problem has to do with the way everything is programmed... it might be a BIOS matter. Probably bought something that was intentionally set to "overclock" which is really not something I'm interested in doing.
Oh and I have no idea how to monitor my card's temperature. I touched the card once and it was pretty hot. Though I kinda expected that.

Unless you bought some sort of hacker gaming shit, nothing is made to overclock that I've ever seen. There are ways to do it but not stock, usually.
If the fan wasn't making noise and now suddenly is, your best bet is to take the 2 week hit and send it into them for a repair or replacement because it's not gonna get better.

I bought some XPS gaming desktop from Dell last year so it might have been pre-programmed to OC. They only offered one choice for video card and I heard nothing but good things about 8800 GT.
The fan's always made noise when it goes high speeds, it just heats up and cranks up really quickly these days. And the noise has been really really really goddamned annoying. Maybe a faulty crappy heatsink? Also the machine was designed to have vents all over the front and back of the case, so any internal workings would be that much easier to hear.
I know the fan's just doing its job, but I can seriously hear it through noise-cancelling headphones. This ain't normal Toto.

new egg sells video card coolers in the Fans and Heatsinks section.(my bad)
as for buying things overclocked there are plenty of them.
Unless you got the h2c xps system nothing of your is OC'ed.
My card at idle is 30-31c so not hot to the touch.
Also most video card UI have temp monitors in them.
You can also DL aftermarket ones. google searhc VideoCard temp and i bet you could find one.
Get someof those other ones i mentioned and report back.
I would like to see if you are running hot all over.
FYI nothing is pre-programmed TO oc. it either OC'ed or not.
