View Full Version : Is It Possible To Cook A Delicious Steak...
...indoors, not over an open flame?
I'm a grill master and would bet my life than no one on the planet can cook a steak on a BBQ as well as I can, but I'm a liability in the kitchen. What's the best way to cook one inside? The oven? The stove? The Foreman grill? What kind of preparation is needed?
Please, someone help me.
I'm tired of chicken, pasta, and eggs. Those are the only things I trust myself to cook.

i have a foreman but for steak i pan fry both sides to sear the juices in and bake at 350 for about 25 min for a med well done steak,dont use the foreman for steak,it pushes the flavor right out of it

Do you have to put anything in the pan to grease it? How about when you put it in the oven afterwards, Dis? Do you put a marinade over it?
I literally know NOTHING about cooking.

i do it all the time
i cut some of the fat off the steak first
and put that in the hot frying pan to melt and grease up the pan
then you put in the steak and it won't stick
bonus is you get to eat those little bits of crispy fat at the end

Use the broiler in your oven. I've cooked many porterhouse steaks in my oven just by using the broiler.
About 4-5 mins on each side.

only marinade with lesser cuts, like london broil (still mighty tasty) not porterhouses or their ilk.

When I was a little girl my parents would make steak in the oven....
They would take a 9x13 pan and add about half and inch of water in the bottom, add some dry spices and cook the ever loving hell out of it. The quality of steak would be the cheapest they could find. ( These were my depression surviving grandparents ).
It wasn't until I met my husband in 1995 that I had my first decent steak. He put a cast iron skillet on the stove and got it really really hot. Once he has covered the steak in olive oil, salt and pepper he added the steak to the very hot pan.
He seared both sided of the steak ( a nice porterhouse about 1 1/2 inches thick) until they had a nice crusts on each side. 6 minutes the first side 4 minutes the second side. He placed the second side on an area of the pan that was still very hot.
He then put it under the broil for another 8 minutes. ( pre-heating the broiler first of course.)
It was the best steak I have ever had in my life. It was still red/pink in the middle and he made a great sauce from the bits in the bottom of the pan for dipping steak fries in.
This is how we make all of our steaks in the winter and early spring. Cast iron pans are great, if you can find a nice cast iron pan with those little ridges on the bottom of the pan, they are great for getting "grill marks" on the steak.

buy a cast iron grill pan. If you have an electric stove, preheat your oven with the pan in it to 500 degrees, let it heat up (15 minutes or so), switch it to broil and cook the steak like you would on a grill.
I actually think its better that way than on a grill (but its really, really close). We bought our cast iron grille pan at Target for $20 and its one of the best purchases we've ever made.

Like most have suggested, searing in an oven-safe pan is the way to go for steaks inside.
Once you've seared the steak in a pan, I think that putting it in the oven for a few is the way to go,(the broiler might be overkill).
Let the steak rest on a plate when you take it out for at least 5 minutes before cutting.
While its resting; throw some diced shallots, and maybe some sliced shrooms into the hot pan on the stove with a little butter and scrape up the meat stuff that stuck to the pan (1 min.). Then throw 3/4ths of a glass or so of whatever red wine you're drinking (not mad dog 20/20 or cisco) bring to a quick bubble and turn down the heat and let the sauce reduce for a few mins.
The sauce will be ready just in time for you to serve the steak.
I hope that I've helped you entertain your lupine tendencies. Savage.

yes they do, but their broilers are a lot hotter than a typical home oven/broiler.
a hot pan will help it cook from both sides as not to just bake the steak.
I have done it this way a few times but I live in the west and can grill outside 99% of the year

I live where it snows and gets cold and I grill outside 99% of the year as well...its just worth it.
Gvac you got some good advice here today, I hope you dont burn down your place.

when you cook on a grill and close the cover your cooking with an oven.
When you broil and leave your oven door open it doesnt shut the broiler off or keep heat in.

It's almost impossible to fuck up a steak, especially if you like it rare / medium rare. The only thing you can do is over cook it.

sure, if it were a roast. i imagine he has what amount to a large steak.
For the outside grill taste indoors... the Forman-type grille is the my preference. My family (excluding me) prefers it to the outside grill. We have a Cuisinart indoor grille, but there cannot be that much difference between the brands (my wife is a Cuisinart fan). Start it very hot to seal in the juices and crank it down for a slow cook.

It makes a hell of a difference, the cheapest cast iron skillet can perform like a top of the line pan if it's taken care of, one thing to be sure of is keeping a hot cast iron skillet away from cold water. You can crack one in half, if you are not careful.

As stated before..Cast Iron Skillet..sear put in oven.
London Broil marinade I tried...Tablespoon of Polaners garlic, tablespoon of creamy Peanutbutter, About a 3rd of a cup of balsalmic Vinegar, Tablespoon of Rasberry Honey, Salt, Coarse ground black pepper. Mix until the peanutbutterand honey dissolves and put the meat in for a few hours. When you pop it in the oven pour some over the top of it. Turned out surprisingly well.

There is also nothing wrong with BBQing in the winter. My brother in law does it all year. Try the broiler, but be aware it will spatter as it cooks and get all over the inside and its hard to clean. I have a better quality type of Foreman grill, from Cuisinart and it can be used as a press, or it can open flat as a grill. Works great and you can grill onions and peppers or seasoned and oiled potato slices at the same time..

So what happened with the steak or did Gvac actually burn his house down?
I recently started first putting it in the oven 350 using a meat thermometer until the internal temp hits 90 degrees, then sear it in a blazin' hot cast iron skillet and let it rest a few minutes before digging in.
A little salt and pepper before it goes into the oven... I got this idea from some article I read online..

This works pretty well for us too, but I think the broiler is probably the best option.
