as discussed on the show today
how do you define fandom?
from sports to bands.

I think a good way to tell if you are a "FAN" of a team is if you root for them over other "Rooting" interests common to neutral fans...
For example - it is common in our society for a neutral crowd always to root for the underdog. To say you are a "fan" of a team, you would have to root for your team no matter what.
I went to school in Ohio, but am a Pittsburgh Panthers fan above all over College Sport teams. My Ohio University upset Pitt a couple years back - I was upset. I am a FAN of Pitt.

I root for the Knicks no matter what. I would have to classify as a fan if I was willing to go to games to see team titanic sink further.
History has more to do with it than winning, most fans find out as much as possible about the team/band.

I think if you stay current with the band/sports activity you're a fan.
Maybe have gone to a couple of games or shows but i don't get this measurement of how big of a fan you are by having everything they have ever produced in either music, merch, etc.

Anyone can say theyre a fan of something.
It's easier to get a feel on who they really are when they tell you what theyre NOT a fan of.

To be true fan you have to join a messageboard and accuse others of not being a fan.

Fan is defined from how something makes you feel, not how much you have.

I think that in sports, you need a true hatred of a rival team. As an Alabama fan, I personally can't stand to be around any and all Auburn fans. I hate them all. Roll Tide!
As for bands, i think you have to be willing to travel to see a show to be considered a true fan. I'm not talking about a 2 hour car ride. I mean plane flight across the country. Of course you should know any and all details about that band and the music, but you also need to be FANatical. Or call it obsessive. I have a problem with this.:smoke:

I don't think it's possible for an adult to be anywhere near as passionate about a band or sports team as they were when they were in their teens or early 20's.
If they are there's something wrong with them.

I knew it...you broke up with Keith Richards!

I'm a Lebowski, Your a Lebowski.
If you support them through highs and lows... you are a fan
Unlike ESD, I don't think you have to like all of a musician's work to be a fan of the musician... just like you don't have to like when your sports team does poorly to be a fan of the team. You just don't abandon them when they are on a low...

I would call using the term "hate" for a rival teams fans obsessive and (no offense) sad. This is why I am not a big sports fan. See I "Hate" people who rob me or would hurt my family or friends. I don't "hate" someone just because they wear a different teams shirt.

I don't like every song of every album of most of the bands I love. I consider my fandom the purchase of a ticket, some $40 merch, and youtubing their interviews when they come to town. Especially in this economy.
There are "fans" and there are "uberfans". "Uberfans" frighten me because its almost an OCD Obsession, like a guy who would kill a chick and the guy shes with "Because if I can't have her, nobody can.".

I dont think there are quantities or memorization involved. If something is part of your life,if you would miss it if it wasnt there, you are a fan of it.

No offense taken on the hatred of a rival comment. As a Bama fan, an Aubbie cow fucker would rob me and try to hurt my family and friends. I don't expect someone from up north to understand how crazy these football rivalries get. I admit that it is out of control and ridiculous at times.
I live in Florida and you would think that Tebow was the freaking Messiah! I went to a wedding yesterday where the bride/groom walked out after the ceremony to the Gator fight song. All the flowers were blue and orange. I had to leave early from the reception because I couldn't take the BS crazy talk everywhere you turned about how great the Gators are going to be next year in football.:help:

Noun 1. fandom - the fans of a sport or famous person
followers, following - a group of followers or enthusiasts
But fact of the matter is to be a FAN is to Enjoy what you love..
If its a team:
Happy when they Win
Upset when the lose
But a supporter through thick and thin.. thats a fan (In my book)
